Magnetic porous microspheres composed of Fe3C, MnO and graphitic carbon (Fe3C/MnO/GC) were prepared by a one-pot method. A polycondensate obtained from urea and formaldehyde served as the carbon source and was calcined in the presence of metallic iron and manganese to yield Fe3C/MnO/GC. A series of polyimides containing methyl substituents and 9(10H)-anthrone pendant groups was prepared from this diamine with various aromatic dianhydridesviathe poly(amic acid) (PAA) precursors and subsequent thermal or chemical imidization procedure. Inherent viscosities of PAAs are between 0.87 and 1.58 dL/g, and the corresponding polyimides have the weight-average molecular weight and number-average molecular weight in the range of 49,400-64,200 and 28,700-37,700, respectively. Most of the polyimides obtained through the chemical cyclodehydration method are soluble in NMP, DMF, DMAc, Py andm-cresol at room temperature. These polyimides have glass transition temperatures of 289-313 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 484-524 degrees C, char yields of 55-63% at 800 degrees C, and temperature at the maximum-rate degradation of 560-584 degrees C in nitrogen, respectively. The polyimide films obtained through the thermal imidization have tensile strength of 76.43-119.74 MPa, elongation at break of 6.93-12.33%, and tensile modulus of 1.91-2.38 GPa.

BackgroundWith the increasing demand for vegetative oil and the approach of peak seed oil production, it is important to develop new oil production platforms from non-seed tissues. Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is one of the crops for vegetable oil for industrial applications with yield around 1.4 ton oil per hectare produced in seed. The castor caruncle is a non-seed tissue attached to seed.ResultsCaruncle accumulates up to 40% oil by weight in the form of triacylglycerol (TAG), with a highly contrasting fatty acid composition when compared to the seed oil. Biochemical analysis indicated that the caruncle synthesizes TAGs independent of the seed. Such non-seed tissue has provided an excellent resource for understanding the mechanism of oil accumulation in tissues other than seeds. Transcriptome analysis revealed the key members of gene families involved in fatty acid synthesis and TAG assembly in the caruncle. A transient expression assay of these selected genes resulted in a 20-fold increased TAG accumulation in leaves.ConclusionsCastor caruncle utilizes an independent system to synthesize TAGs. Results provide the possibility of exploiting caruncle gene set to engineer oil production in non-seed tissues or microbes.

An efficient intramolecular radical cyclization reaction via photoredox catalysis was developed for the synthesis of dibenzocycloketone derivatives using methylene blue as a photosensitizer. This strategy could be widely used to synthesize large heterocycles due to the unique reactivity of phosphoranyl radicals formed by a polar/SET crossover between an aromatic carboxylic acid and a phosphine radical cation. Recent studies have raised concerns about e-cigarette liquid inhalation toxicity by reporting the presence of chemicals with European Union CLP toxicity classification. In this scenario, the regulatory context is still developing and is not yet up to date with vaping current reality. Due to the paucity of toxicological studies, robust data regarding which components in e-liquids exhibit potential toxicities, are still inconsistent. In this study we applied computational methods for estimating the toxicity of poorly studied chemicals as a useful tool for predicting the acute toxicity of chemicals contained in e-liquids. The purpose of this study was 3-fold: (a) to provide a lower tier assessment of the potential health concerns associated with e-liquid ingredients, (b) to prioritize e-liquid ingredients by calculating the e-tox index, and (c) to estimate acute toxicity of e-liquid mixtures. QSAR models were generated using QSARINS software to fill the acute toxicity data gap of 264 e-liquid ingredients. As a second step, the potential acute toxicity of e-liquids mixtures was evaluated. Our preliminary data suggest that a computational approach may serve as a roadmap to enable regulatory bodies to better regulate e-liquid composition and to contribute to consumer health protection.
