Chiral polyureas of cinchona alkaloids were synthesized via repetitive Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. The Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of cinchona urea dimers6and aromatic diiodide7afforded the chiral polyureas (P1-P4). The catalytic activity of the chiral polymers was subsequently investigated. The asymmetric Michael addition of ketoesters to nitroolefins was successfully catalyzed by the polymeric organocatalysts (P1-P4) to give the corresponding Michael adducts with high catalytic activities and excellent enantionselectivities (up to >99% ee). The polymeric catalysts were insoluble in commonly used organic solvents. They were easily recovered and reused several times without any loss of the catalytic activity.

An efficient microwave assisted synthesis of 2-amino-3-carboxamide-1,1′-biaryls derivatives 4a-p and terphenyl derivative 5a from 2-amino-5-iodobenzamide 2a, 2-amino-3,5-diiodobenzamide 2b and (het)aryl boronic acids via Suzuki coupling has been achieved. Synthetic utility of the product 4-amino-4′-cyano-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carboxamide 4j has been demonstrated for the synthesis of 4-(aryl amino)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carboxamide derivatiyes 10a-c via Chan-Evans-Lam coupling reaction. Furthermore, 4-(4′-oxo-3′, 4′-dihydro-1’H-spirof[fluorene-9,2′-quinazolin]-6′-yl)benzonitrile 12a was obtained from biaryl derivative 4j and fluorenone 11a and 6(4-methoxyphenyl)2-(ferrocenyl) quinazolin-4(3H)-one 12b from biaryl derivative 4k and ferrocenealdehyde lib using phosphotungstic acid as green catalyst and solvent free microwave irradiation condition. Remarkably, all the synthesized 2-amino-3-carboxamide-1,1′-biaryls and 4-(aryl amino)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carboxamide derivatives 4a-p showed luminescence in the blue region with large Stokes shift. Significantly, 2-amino-3-carboxamide-1,1′-biaryls 4d and 4j showed high fluorescence quantum yields (Phi(f)) 0.54 and 0.84, respectively.

Catalyst-free photoinduced processes in aqueous medium represent significant advancement toward development of green and sustainable pathways in organic synthesis. tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) is a widely used oxidant in organic reactions, where the decomposition of TBHP into its radicals by metal catalysts or other reagents is a key factor for efficient catalytic outcome. Herein, we report a simple and environmentally friendly visible light-promoted synthetic pathway for the synthesis of N-heterocyclic moieties, such as quinazolinones and quinoxalines, in the presence of TBHP as an oxidizing agent in aqueous medium that requires no catalysts/photocatalysts. The enhanced rate of decomposition to generate free radicals from TBHP upon visible light irradiation is the driving force for the domino reaction.

Despite the huge contribution of membrane-based brine and wastewater purification systems in today’s life, biofouling still affects sustainability of membrane engineering. Aimed at reducing membrane modules wastage, the need to study biofouling monitoring as one of contributory factors stemmed from the short time between initial attachment and irreversible biofoulant adhesion. Hence, a membrane for monitoring is introduced to determine the right cleaning time by using fluorescent sensing as a nondestructive and scalable approach. The classical solid-state emissive fluorophore, tetraphenylethylene (TPE), was introduced as a sustainable, safe and sensitive fluorescent indicator in order to show the potential of the method, and polyethersulfone (PES) and non-solvent-induced phase separation method, the most popular material and method, are used to fabricate membrane in industry and academia. Since the employed filler has an aggregation-induced emission (ALE) characteristic, it can track the biofouling throughout the operation. The fabricated membranes have certain characterizations (i.e. morphology assessment, flux, antibiogram, flow cytometry, surface free energy, and protein adsorption) which indicate that hybrid membrane with 5 wt % of TPE has identical biofouling activity compared to neat PES membrane and its optimal luminescence properties make it an appropriate candidate for non-destructive and online biofouling monitoring. This study evaluated the remobilization, mineralization, and metabolism of herbicide-bound residues in soils amended with various types of sugarcane waste. Soil with bound residues of three herbicides and fresh soil samples were added to the biometric flasks, followed by the addition of vinasse, filter cake, or sugarcane straw in order to reactivate the microbial activity. In sandy loam soil, higher mineralization was observed where filter cake was added, and the maximum mineralized percentage was 7.7, 46.7, and 8.1% of diuron-, hexazinone-, and metribuzin-bound residues, respectively. Conversely, this soil presented a greater percentage of re-extractable hexazinone and metribuzin residues when vinasse was added. Among the examined herbicides, a higher percentage of bound metribuzin residues remained in the soil (57.5-75.6%). It was possible to identify both metabolites and parent compounds in the re-extracted residues, implying either species could bind to the soil. Therefore, this study has shown that bound residues of three herbicides and their metabolites can become bioavailable, and mineralized or returned to the soil solution, which could adversely affect subsequent crops or non-target organisms. Hence, the remobilization of bound residues must be taken into account when assessing the environmental risk of herbicides in soils in registration processes.

Ecological wastewater treatment plant (EWWTP), a kind of emerging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in recent years, combined microbiology with botany which is efficient for the removal of nitrogen and organic matter, as well as deodorization. The occurrence and removal of micro-organic pollutants in EWWTPs were still not well known. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their typical derivatives (SPAHs) including the oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), and methyl PAHs (MPAHs) were investigated in an EWWTP in Guangdong Province, China. The concentrations of the sigma 6 OPAHs (114-384ng/L) were higher than the sigma 16 PAHs (92-250ng/L), and much higher than the sigma 4 MPAHs (13-64ng/L) and sigma 9 ClPAHs (2-3ng/L) in the EWWTP and the effluent receiving river. The total removal efficiencies of the PAHs, OPAHs, MPAHs, and ClPAHs in the EWWTP (43 +/- 14%, 41 +/- 7%, 55 +/- 16%, and 18 +/- 4%) were lower than the traditional WWTPs, probably due to the lower concentration of the sludge in the ecological treatment. The advanced treatment process (microfiltration and UV disinfection treatment) contributed much less (0-20%) to the whole removal efficiency than the ecological treatment (80-100%). The effluent from the EWWTP slightly reduced the PAHs and SPAHs concentrations in the receiving river. The high concentrations of the PAHs and SPAHs in the receiving river were similar to the influent of the EWWTP, indicating that some untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the river, especially in the upstream.

The main focus of this work is to investigate the degradation behavior of two newly developed encapsulants for photovoltaic applications (thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and polyolefin elastomer (POE)), compared to the most widely used Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) upon exposure to two different artificial ageing tests (with and without ultraviolet (UV) irradiation). Additive composition, optical and thermal properties and chemical structure (investigated by means of Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry, UV-Visible-Near Infrared spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis and Fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy, respectively) of the analyzed polymers were monitored throughout the exposure to artificial ageing tests. Relevant signs of photo-oxidation were detectable for TPO after the UV test, as well as a depletion of material’s stabilizers. Signs of degradation for EVA and POE were detected when the UV dose applied was equal to 200 kW h m(-2). A novel approach is presented to derive information of oxidation induction time/dose from thermogravimetric measurements that correlate well with results obtained by using oxidation indices.

Objectives: Brain metastases are common among patients with non-squamous non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and result in a poor prognosis. Consequently, such patients are often excluded from clinical trials. In Italy an expanded access program (EAP) was used to evaluate nivolumab efficacy and safety in this sub population outside a clinical trial. Materials and methods: In this EAP, nivolumab was available for patients with non-squamous NSCLC in progression after at least one systemic treatment for stage IIIB/IV disease. Nivolumab 3 mg/kg was administered intravenously every 2 weeks. Patients with brain metastases could be included if they were asymptomatic, neurologically stable and either off corticosteroids or on a stable or decreasing dose of <= 10 mg/day prednisone. Results: 409 out of 1588 patients included had asymptomatic or controlled brain metastases. A median of 7 doses (range 1-45) were delivered. Median follow-up was 6.1 months (range 0.1-21.9). The disease control rate was 39%: 4 patients had a complete response, 64 a partial response and 96 showed stable disease. At baseline, 118 patients were on corticosteroids and 74 were undergoing concomitant radiotherapy. The median overall survival in this subpopulation was 8.6 months (95% CI: 6.4-10.8). 337 discontinued treatment for various reasons, 23 (7%) of whom due to adverse events, in line with that observed in the overall population and in previous studies. Conclusions: Our results confirm that nivolumab is active in non-squamous NSCLC patients with brain metastases, despite their poor prognosis. We report here a C-H homoallylation reaction of aromatic ketones with methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) only using a catalytic amount of Fe(PMe3)(4). A variety of aromatic ketones and MCPs are applicable to the reaction to form ortho-homoallylated aromatic ketones selectively via regioselective scission of the three-membered rings. The homoallylated products are amenable to further elaborations, providing functionalized 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes.
