This study reports an innovative pathway for successfully synthesizing composite panels using various waste input. For this purpose, seven types of powder from waste or widely available filler i.e. Quartz off-cut, sand, waste seashell, dolomite, limestone aggregates, concrete waste and limestone dust were used. The study aims to assess the effectiveness and mechanical properties of the various waste powder in the production of powder-resin composites. The panels were then compared with the novel polymeric glass composite (PGC) in the previous study (Heriyanto et al., 2018). Following the same procedure in PGC, the filler was individually grounded to 64-108 mu m and chemically treated with amino silane coupling agent (CA). The powder filler (untreated or treated) is then mixed with the resin binder with a ratio of 80/20 respectively, followed by hot pressing the mixture at the pressure of 550 bar at 65 degrees C for 1 h. The final composite slab is then further cut for mechanical testing. It was found in the study that when CA was not added, surface roughness of the powder particles affected the flexural strength of the final panel significantly. High surface roughness particles such as in Quartz, sand and seashell adhere effectively with the resin binder which led to higher strength. On the contrary, other factors like smooth particle morphology in glass, dolomite and limestone as well as porous structure in concrete and clump of very fine powder in limestone dust degrade the strength of the final panels. With CA addition, adhesion between resin and powder filler were improved significantly. Flexural strength after the CA treatment was found to be much affected by particle characteristics. Silica-based panels i.e. quartz, sand and glass which consist of high strength and hardness of silica particles perform better compared to that of calcium carbonate-based panels. Compression strength, toughness, stiffness, scratch resistance, density and water absorption were also reported in this study. The properties of all the treated panels are found to be comparable, or if not, much better than natural stones. These new approaches of using waste filler in powder – resin based composites can be a new alternative to produce green materials that deliver economic and environmental benefits. An environmentally friendly, inexpensive, carbocatalyst, graphene oxide (GO) promoted efficient, metal-free transamidation of various carboxamides with aliphatic, cyclic, and aromatic amines is demonstrated. The protocol is equally applicable to phthalimide, urea, and thioamide determining its adaptability. The oxygenated functionalities such as carbonyl (C=O), epoxy (O), carboxyl (COOH) and hydroxyl (OH), present on graphene oxide surface impart acidic properties to the catalyst. The graphene oxide being heterogeneous in nature, work efficiently under solvent-free reaction conditions providing desired products in good to excellent yields. The one-pot synthesis of 2,3-Dihydro-5H-benzo[b]-1,4-thiazepin-4-one moiety by GO catalyzed Aza Michael addition followed by intramolecular transamidation is also described. A plausible reaction mechanistic pathway involving H-bonding is discussed. The graphene oxide can be recycled and reused up to five cycles without much loss in catalytic activity.

Membrane fouling is a major challenge for long-term oil/water separation. The incomplete degradation of organic pollutants or membrane damage exists in the common methods of membrane regeneration. Herein, a dual-responsive nanofibrous membrane with high water-in-oil emulsion separation efficiency and smart cleaning properties is reported, which shows complete restoration of its original separation performance. The pH-responsive and upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type thermoresponsive nanofibrous membrane with a micro/nanosphere structure was developed via a one-step-blending electrospinning strategy. The membrane displays high hydrophobicity/oleophilicity at pH 7 and 25 degrees C and hydrophilicity/oleophobicity at pH 3 and 55 degrees C. As a result, it exhibits an ultrahigh permeability of 60528.76 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) and a separation efficiency of 99.5% for water-in-D5 emulsions at room temperature (25 degrees C). Moreover, the contaminated membranes could be easily reclaimed by being rinsed with warm acidic water (pH 3 and 55 degrees C). The membrane maintained high separation performance after being used for multiple cycles, indicating its scalable application for purifying emulsified oil. This study provides a facial method of constructing membranes with multiscale hierarchical structures and a new idea for the design of recyclable oil/water separation membranes.

Micro-patterned hydrogels have received increasing attention in various research fields that need a fine structure and advanced functions compared to bulk hydrogels. For enhancing their performance, control of the size and distribution of pores in hydrogels is crucial. In particular, for the application of thermoresponsive hydrogels to a soft actuator, the characteristics of pores play an important role in enhancing the response time. We formed a porous structure in micro-patterns of polydiethylacrylamide (PDEAM), a thermoresponsive hydrogel, and analyzed the effect of pore size on the response time of the patterned hydrogels. Micro-patterned thermoresponsive hydrogels are fabricated by photo-crosslinking PDEAM copolymerized with benzophenone photo-crosslinker and polystyrene (PS) as a porogen. Pores sufficiently smaller than patterned objects, between a few micrometers to a few tens of micrometers, are successfully formed by controlling the content and molecular weight of PS. As the size and number of pores increase, the response time is improved, and the response time for swelling and deswelling is improved by up to 52 and 43% by blending PDEAM with 50 vol% of low molecular weight PS (5 kg/mol). This simple way to form a sub-millimeter scale hydrogel structure with controlled pores can be utilized in the emerging research fields, including 3D cell scaffolds, targeted drug delivery, and soft robotics.

Purpose Many studies have revealed that statin therapy reduced mortality in cancer patients, especially in breast cancer, but the effect for second cancer was unclear. We, therefore, performed a comparable cohort study to determine the risk of second cancer in breast cancer patients with statin therapy. Methods Using claims data from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Program, this study enrolled newly diagnosed breast cancer patients from 2000 to 2007 with and without statin therapy as the statin (n = 1222) and nonstatin (n = 4888) cohorts, respectively. The nonstatin cohort was propensity score matched by cohort entry year, age, and randomly selected comorbidities. These two cohorts were followed up until the diagnosis of second cancer, death, or the end of 2011. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios. Results The statin cohort had a lower incidence rate than the nonstatin cohort for second cancer (7.37 vs. 8.36 per 1000 person-years), although the difference was not significant (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.65-1.26). Compared with the nonstatin cohort, the second cancer risk was significantly higher for patients taking pravastatin (aHR 2.71, 95% CI 1.19-6.19) but lower for those receiving multiple statin treatment (aHR 0.45, 95% CI 0.25-0.81) and combined lipophilic and hydrophilic type of statin (aHR 0.42, 95% CI 0.20-0.89). The risk was lower for patients receiving a cumulative defined daily dose (cDDD) of > 430 (aHR 0.41, 95% CI 0.19-0.86). Conclusion This study showed that there is little association between statin use and second cancer risk in breast cancer patients.

12-Deoxyphorbol-13-phenylacetate (DPP), found in Euphorbia resinifera, is a prototype of a new class of phorbol derivatives that function as protein kinase C activators with potent anti-tumor-promoting activity. To better understand the biosynthesis of DPP in E. resinifera and develop methods for its production, we used next-generation sequencing technologies to build a transcriptome dataset. We obtained a total of approximately 27,102,078 clean reads that were assembled into 90,448 unigenes. Of those, 129 and 59 unigenes were identified in the Terpenoid Backbone Biosynthesis (TBB) (KEGG map00900) and the Diterpenoid Biosynthesis (DB) (KEGG map00904) pathways, respectively. We investigated the expression patterns of 23 DPP biosynthesis-related genes and validated the results by quantitative real time PCR. The results showed that CMK (4-diphosphocytidyl-2-C-methyl-o-erythritol kinase), MECS (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 2,4-cyclodiphosphate synthase), HDS (1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-(E)-butenyl 4-diphosphate synthase), and IPI (Isopentenyl-diphosphate Delta-isomerase) of the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway had a higher expression compared to other genes of TBB, whereas the expression levels of genes involved in the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway were relatively lower and not significantly different from each other. Furthermore, the expression of the 23 genes in root, stem and young stem differed, and the statistical results indicated that HMGS (Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase), MVK (mevalonic acid), MECT (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate cytidylyltransferase), MECS, HDS and IPI in the TBB pathway as well as KS in the DB pathway were significantly and positively correlated with the CS (casbene synthase) gene. These results suggested that both cytosol-localized MVA and plastid-localized MEP pathways may have a significant contribution in DPP accumulation, with MEP pathway playing a dominant role. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first transcriptome analysis of E. resinifera and the results reported here will aid the identification of functional genes and better understanding of DPP biosynthesis.

Cinchona-based chiral hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) were designed and successfully synthesized via the Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. AB(2) and A(2)B-type chiral monomers were prepared from cinchona squaramide derivatives, where A (vinyl) reacted only with B (iodophenyl) under MH reaction conditions. The chiral HBPs obtained by the MH polymerization contained cinchona squaramide moieties and demonstrated excellent diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity in asymmetric Michael addition reactions of methyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate and trans-beta-nitrostyrene. According to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No396/2005, EFSA has reviewed the maximum residue levels (MRLs) currently established at European level for the pesticide active substance fluometuron.
