Photoredox catalysis in recent years has manifested a powerful branch of science in organic synthesis. Although merging photoredox and metal catalysts has been a widely used method, switchable heterogeneous photoredox catalysis has rarely been considered. Herein, we open a new window to use a switchable heterogeneous photoredox catalyst which could be turned on/off by changing a simple stimulus (O-2) for two opponent reactions, namely, oxidative and protodecarboxylation. Using this strategy, we demonstrate that Au@ZnO core-shell nanoparticles could be used as a switchable photocatalyst which has good catalytic activity to absorb visible light due to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of gold, can decarboxylate a wide range of aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids, have multiple reusability, and are a reasonable candidate for synthesizing both aldehydes/ketones and alkane/arenes in a large-scale set up. Some biologically active molecules are also shown via examples of the direct oxidative and protodecarboxylation which widely provided pharmaceutical agents.

The development of methodologies for inducing and tailoring enantioselectivities of catalysts is an important issue in asymmetric catalysis. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that chiral molecular catalysts can be boosted from completely nonselective to highly enantioselective when installed in nanostructured metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Exfoliation of layered crystals is one of the most direct synthetic routes to unitrathin nanosheets, but its use in MOFs is limited by the availability of layered MOFs. We illustrate that layered MOFs can be designed using ligand-capped metal clusters and angular organic linkers. This leads to the synthesis of two three-dimensional (3D) layered porous MOFs from Zn-4-p-tert-butylsulfonyl calix[4]arene and chiral angular 1,1′-binaphthol/-biphenol dicarboxylic acids, which can be ultrasonic exfoliated into one- and two-layer nanosheets. The obtained MOF materials are efficient catalysts for asymmetric cascade condensation and cyclization of 2-aminobenzamide and aldehydes to produce 2,3-dihyroquinazolinones. While both binaphthol and biphenol display no enantioselectivity, restriction of their freedom in the MOFs leads to 56-90% and 46-72% ee, respectively, which are increased to 72-94% and 64-82% ee after exposure to external surfaces of the flexible nanosheets. Moreover, the MOF crystals and nanosheets exhibit highly sensitive fluorescent enhancement in the presence of chiral amino alcohols with enantioselectivity factors being, respectively, increased up to 1.4 and 2.3 times of the values of the diols, allowing them to be utilized in chiral sensing. Therefore, the observed enantioselectivities increase in the order organocatalyst < MOF crystals < MOF nanosheets in both catalysis and sensing. This work not only provides a strategy to make 3D layered MOFs and their untrathin nanosheets but also paves the way to utilize nanostructured MOFs to manipulate enantioselectivities of molecular catalysts. Chloroform, a regulated disinfection by-product in water, is often generated during chlorination disinfection treatment. However, the formation of chloroform is heavily dependent on the molecular structures of precursors. Moreover, compounds containing ketone moiety are ubiquitous in water environments. However, it is unclear if they can generate chloroform during chlorination. In this study, 14 benzophenones (BPs), efficient and widely used UV filters, with different substituents were selected to explore chloroform formation during chlorination. All 14 BPs generated chloroform, with yields dependent on their molecular structures and operational conditions. Compounds 2,2′,4,4′-tetrahydroxy-BP and benzophenone produced the highest and lowest chloroform of 0.313 and 0.013 g/g, respectively, corresponding to the fastest and slowest formation rate constants of 1.41 x 10(-1) and 2.71 x 10(-2) min(-1). Alkaline conditions and high chlorine dosages were favorable to chloroform formation. Three reactions played key roles in chloroform formation from BPs: (1) chlorine initiated Baeyer Villiger oxidation converted ketone moieties of BP molecules into esters; (2) the esters further underwent hydrolysis and formed phenolic and benzoic products; and (3) benzoic acids underwent decarboxylation and hydrolysis to form phenolic products. Subsequently, these phenolic products could further generate chloroform in the chlorination system. More importantly, BPs could generate chloroform in the ambient water matrices during practical chlorination treatment. This work emphasized the critical role of Baeyer-Villiger oxidation for chloroform formation, implying that pollutants containing aromatic ketone moieties generate chloroform during chlorination disinfection, and their potential risk should therefore be reviewed. A new series of benzofuran derivatives has been designed and synthesized. The structures of the synthesized compounds have been confirmed by the use of H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, 2D H-1-H-1 NOESY NMR, and IR. Anticancer activity is evaluated against Hepatocellular carcinoma (HePG2), mammary gland breast cancer (MCF-7), Epitheliod carcinoma cervix cancer (Hela) and human prostate cancer (PC3). Compounds 8, 9, and 11 showed the highest activity towards the four cell lines with an IC50 range of 8.49-16.72 mu M, 6.55-13.14 mu M and 4-8.99 mu M respectively in comparison to DOX (4.17-8.87 mu M). Phosphatidylinositol-3-kinases (PI3K) inhibition was evaluated against the most active anticancer compounds 8, 9 and 11. Compounds 8, 9 and 11 showed good inhibitory activity against PI3Ka with IC50 values 4.1, 7.8, and 20.5 mu M, respectively in comparison to 6.18 mu M for the reference compound LY294002. In addition, activity of compounds 8 and 9 on cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in different phases of MCF-7 cells were assessed and detected pre-G1 apoptosis and cell growth arrest at G2/M. Also, both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis in MCF-7 cells induced by compounds 8 and 9. Molecular docking, binding affinity surface mapping, and contact preference of the synthesized compounds 8, 9 and 11 against PI3K were estimated and studied computationally using molecular operating environment software (MOE) and showed good interaction with essential residues for inhibition Val851. In addition, antimicrobial activity was evaluated against gram positive isolates as Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, gram negative isolate as Escherichia cob, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal potential against Candida albicans. Compound 17 showed outstanding anti Gram-positive activity with MIC values 8 and 256 mu g/mL. in Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus respectively. Also, compounds 15, 17, 18 and 21 showed good anti Gram-negative activity with MIC value 512 mu g/mL. for all compounds. In addition, the state-of-art quorum sensing (QS) inhibiting effects were detected using Chromobacterium violaceum and compounds 7, 9, 10, 11, and 12 showed good QS inhibition (3, 3, 5, 2, and 7 mm).

Discovery of novel anti-obesity agents is a challenging and promising research area. Based on our previous works, we synthesized 40 novel beta-indoloquinazoline analogues by altering the skeleton and introducing preferential side chains, evaluated their lipid-lowering activity and summarized the structure-activity relationships. In combination with an evaluation of the lipid-lowering efficacies, AMP-dependent activated protein kinase (AMPK) activating ability and liver microsomal stability, compound 23 (named as IQZ23) was selected for further studies. IQZ23 exerted a high efficacy in decreasing the triglyceride level (EC50 = 0.033 mu M) in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Mechanistic studies revealed the lipid-lowering activity of IQZ23 was dependent on the AMPK pathway by modulating ATP synthase activity. This activation was accompanied by mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidation capacity increased, and insulin sensitivity enhanced in pertinent cell models by various interventions. Correspondingly, IQZ23 (20 mg/kg, i.p.) treatment significantly reversed high fat and cholesterol diet (HFC)- induced body weight increases and accompanying clinical symptoms of obesity in mice but without indicative toxicity. A chromium-containing metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-101 (Chromium(III) benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate), was used to catalyze the one pot, three component synthesis of some 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles under solvent-free conditions. The advantages of using this heterogeneous catalyst include short reaction time, high yields, easy and quick isolation of catalyst and products, low amount of catalyst needed, and that the addition of solvent, salt, and additives are not needed. This catalyst is highly efficient and can be recovered at least 5 times with a slight loss of efficiency. The structure of the metal-organic frameworks (MOF) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (HNMR) were performed to confirm some of the synthesized products. Experimental data indicated that the optimum amount of catalyst was 5 mg for benzil (1 mmol), 4-chlorobenzaldehyde (1 mmol), and ammonium acetate (2.5 mmol), and the synthetic route to the various imidazoles is performed in 10 min by 95% yield, an acceptable result rivalling those of other catalysts.

A novel and rapid voltammetric assay for the simultaneous determination of monolinuron (MLN) and linuron (LIN) using an electrochemically pretreated pencil graphite electrode (PGE*) is reported for the first time. Enhanced oxidation peak currents of MLN and LIN were observed at PGE* when compared with electrochemically non-pretreated PGE. Differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) results showed distinct anodic peaks at 1.064 V and 1.170 V for MLN and LIN, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the detection limits were 3.7 x 10(-7) mol L-1 and 5.8 x 10(-7) mol L-1 for MLN and LIN respectively. The DPV method was applied for the quantitative determination of the mentioned compounds in spiked tap water samples enriched by solid phase extraction. The voltammetric results were in good agreement with high-performance liquid chromatography data.

Along with high power capability and energy density, long cycle life is regarded an essential performance requirement for energy storage devices. The rapid capacitance decline of conducting polymer-based electrodes remains a major technical challenge and precludes their practical applications in supercapacitors. In this work, a polyaniline (PANI) network is synthesized via interfacial Buchwald-Hartwig polymerization for the first time, facilitating the construction of covalently connected PANI networks by ligand-promoted C-N bond formation. Particularly, the interfacial synthesis and subsequent gas release from pre-anchored protecting groups allow bottom-up and efficient access to porous cross-linked PANI (PCL-PANI) films that are free-standing and solvent-resistant. Upon assembling into supercapacitors, the PCL-PANI material enables an unprecedent long-term charge-discharge cycling performance (>18 000 times) without clear capacitance loss for an additive-free pseudocapacitive system. In addition, this synthesis affords electrodes entirely consisting of conducting polymers, yielding highly reversible gravimetric capacitance at 435 F g(electrode)(-1) in a two-electrode system, and a high gravimetric energy of 12.5 W h kg(electrode)(-1) while delivering an outstanding power density of 16 000 W kg(electrode)(-1), which is 10-fold higher than those of conventional linear PANI composite supercapacitors. This synthetic approach represents a novel and versatile strategy to generate additive/binder-free and high-performance conducting thin-films for energy storage.

Production of nanocomposites from macro-scale materials in situ in a melting compounder is highly desirable yet challenging. In this study, we develop a highly efficient approach for the preparation of cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composite materials from as-received wood pulp fibers, in which nanofibrillation-assisting plasticizers (urea and urea derivatives) and a diblock copolymer dispersant are used. The most effective plasticizer is urea, which plays a crucial role in producing CNF with less fragmentation during the kneading step, owing to the plasticization/nanofibrillation and the reaction with hydroxyl groups of cellulose fibers into a carbamate. The diblock copolymer as a dispersant enables the stabilization of the appropriate dispersion of the produced CNF in nonpolar HDPE. The resulting composites exhibit significantly improved mechanical properties, including a 6.9-fold increase in the Youngs modulus with 10 wt % loading of wood pulp fibers over that of neat HDPE.

The enantioselective Henry reaction is a very important and useful carbon-carbon bond forming reaction. The execution of this reaction requires the use of efficient chiral catalysts. In this work, in situ formed complexes of N-substituted dihydroxypyrrolidines, chiral ligands derived from L-tartaric acid and amines, were evaluated as catalysts in the enantioselective Henry reaction. The results showed that the nature of the N-substituent on the ligand significantly influences the outcome of the reaction. Best results were obtained using a Cu (II) complex of (3S,4S)-N-benzyl-3,4-dihydroxypyrrolidine, in the presence of DIPEA, for the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with nitromethane, at room temperature, originating products with er up to 92:8 (R:S) and conversions up to 96%. The interaction between the pyrrolidine ligand and the copper ion, in isopropanol, was followed by UV-vis spectrophotometry, showing a 1:1 stoichiometry and a binding constant of 4.4. The results obtained will contribute to the design and development of more efficient chiral catalysts for this type of reaction.
