Spain is the first olive oil producer worldwide (representing around 45%), with more than 80% of its agricultural area dedicated to this crop. The goal of this study is to assess the environmental impact of the Spanish virgin olive oil production, attending to the farming and industrial phases. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is conducted for 5 harvests in approximately 4.000 ha of olive grove in Jaen, the largest producer region of Spain. The type of farming is the most representative in Spain: conventional (non-organic), with a medium-low slope, extensive (100-150 trees per ha) and around 60% dryland orchards. The industrial phase is based on 2-phase extraction process and olive pomace valorization. The functional unit (FU) chosen for the comparative analysis is 1 kg of unpacked virgin olive oil under a perspective from cradle to gate. One of the most representative categories, climate change, places the average environmental impact in 2.43 kg CO2 eq/kg, while the range is between 1.93 and 3.00 kg CO2 eq/kg depending on the harvest. Huge differences between values are observed in the farming phase and they are mostly caused by the virgin olive oil yield of every harvest. The carbon sequestration analyses and the impact produced per FU ranges from 43.78% (for 15/16 harvest) to 46.36% (for 17/18). The impact hotspots detected in the farming phase, in terms of climate change potential, are the categories of plant protection products and herbicides (24.11% of the average value) and fertilizers (20.01%). However, the environmental impact of the industrial phase is relatively constant, with a value of 0.547-0.554 kg of CO2 equivalent. A facile synthetic route was developed to prepare a surface-grafted brush layer of poly(vinyl ethers) (PVEs) directly by a radical mechanism, with the naked Li+ acting as a catalyst. Density functional theory calculations suggested that complexation of naked Li+ to VEs significantly reduced the highest unoccupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap from 5.08 to 0.68 eV, providing a better prospect for electron transfer. The structure, morphology, and surface properties of grafted polymer layers were characterized using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic water contact angle (DCA). Moreover, ellipsometry data indicated that the thickness of the polymer brushes was in the range of 20-60 nm, which corresponds to the grafting densities of 0.65-1.15 chain/nm(2), and DCA decreased from 84.4 to 45.3 degrees. Most importantly, no hydrolysis was observed for the modified surface after 30 days of exposure to phosphate-buffered saline solution, 0.1 mol/L NaOH(eq) and 0.1 mol/L HCl(eq), demonstrating excellent hydrolysis resistance with long service life. In addition, as a proof of concept, the side hydroxyl groups of grafted PVEs provide active sites for efficient fixation of bioactive molecules, e.g., glycosaminoglycan and serum protein.

This study included 1456 men and 1411 women who were trauma-exposed and underwent routine health examinations in a community epidemiological investigation. The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men. PTSD was related to metabolic syndrome only in women. We plan to further research the mechanism of sex differences and dyslipidemia.

Background Non-neoplastic anal sac disorders (ASD) are frequent presentations for dogs in primary-care practice but evidence-based information on disease occurrence and risk is sparse. This study estimates prevalence, breed associations and other risk factors as well as reporting on clinical management. Methods A cohort study of dogs attending VetCompass practices between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013. Risk factor analysis used multivariable logistic regression methods. Results Of 104,212 dogs attending 110 UK practices, the 1-year period prevalence of ASD was 4.40% (95% CI: 4.22-4.57). Compared to crossbreds, six breeds showed increased odds of ASD (Cavalier King Charles spaniel, King Charles spaniel, Cockapoo, Shih-tzu, Bichon Frise and Cocker spaniel), and six breeds showed reduced odds (Labrador Retriever, Border collie, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Lurcher, German Shepherd Dog and Boxer). Brachycephalic types had 2.6 times the odds for ASD compared to dolichocephalic types. Medication prescribed for ASD included antimicrobials (n = 480, 20.24%) and analgesics (n = 284, 11.97%). Anal sacculectomy was performed in under 1% of cases. Conclusions High prevalence, strong breed predispositions and evidence of severity suggested from the antimicrobial and analgesic therapies combined with current substantial knowledge gaps identify ASD as a key research-neglected syndrome in dogs.

Study Objective: To investigate whether the rate of increase in the performance of abdominal myomectomy over a laparoscopic approach after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety communication regarding morcellator use for myomectomy differs among races. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement data. In a logistic regression analysis adjusted for possible confounders, including all races, the odds ratio of abdominal myomectomy before and after the FDA communication was 1.30 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-1.41; p <. 001). In a logistic regression analysis with a product term of FDA communication exposure and race as a possible effect modifier, the African American population showed a significantly greater change in the odds of abdominal myomectomy over laparoscopic myomectomy in comparison with the white population (1.22; 95% CI, 1.02-1.47; p =.03). This study aimed to evaluate the presence of ultraviolet filters (UV-Fs), benzotriazoles, pyrethroids and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in freshwater and wastewater from the northern Antarctic Peninsula region. All water samples analyzed contained UV-Fs residues and high concentrations were detected in anthropogenic impacted sites (< LOD up to 1300 ng/L). Likewise, benzotriazoles were detected in all water samples (< LOQ-920 ng/L). Regarding suspended particulate matter, almost all UV-Fs and all benzotriazoles were measured at concentrations ranging from < LOQ to 33 mu g/g dry weight. Pyrethroids were also detected (< LOQ-250 ng/L) and their presence implies the existence of a gateway to the Antarctica Peninsula from other regions. The data confirmed the presence of PFASs (< LOD-7500 ng/L) in this area, in agreement with previous studies. In light of these results, extended monitoring in Antarctica should be carried out to perform a reliable environmental risk assessment leading to propose recommendations to minimize the anthropic impact. We report detailed Rainan spectra for the neutral and radical anion forms of benzophenone, fluorenone, 2,2′-bipyridyl, 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-dipyridyl, and anthracene. Density functional theory (DFT) predictions for the Raman spectra of these molecules give additional insight into the assignment of each vibrational mode. While the use of DFT has been problematic in quantifying the thermochemistry of highly delocalized radicals, we find that DFT-predicted spectra using the popular B3LYP functional are in excellent agreement with the observed Raman spectra. In the case of the two bipyridyl compounds, the Raman spectra allowed us to conclude that the cis form of the radical anion complexed to a sodium cation was the preferred configuration. Benzophenone and fluorenone radical anions gave a significantly weakened C=O bond stretching vibrational frequency as expected from the population of an antibonding pi* orbital. For benzophenone, the C=O vibration dropped from 1659 to 1403 cm(-1) upon reduction. Similarly, fluorenone showed a C=O vibration observed at 1719 cm(-1) for the neutral form that decreased to 1522 cm(-1) for the radical anion. The structurally rigid anthracene showed relatively smaller Raman band shifts upon single-electron reduction as the pi* orbital is more equally delocalized on the entire structure. In total, we correlated 65 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for the neutral molecules with an overall error of 7.1 cm(-1) (root-mean-square errors (RMSEs)) and 67 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for radical anions with an overall error of 9.9 cm(-1). These comparisons between theory and experiment are another example to demonstrate the power of DFT in predicting the identity and geometry of molecules using Raman spectroscopy.

PRMT4 is a type I protein arginine methyltransferase and plays important roles in various cellular processes. Overexpression of PRMT4 has been found to be involved in several types of cancers. Selective and in vivo effective PRMT4 inhibitors are needed for demonstrating PRMT4 as a promising therapeutic target. On the basis of compound 6, a weak dual PRMT4/6 inhibitor, we constructed a tetrahydroisoquinoline scaffold through a cut-and-sew scaffold hopping strategy. The subsequent SAR optimization efforts employed structure-based approach led to the identification of a novel PRMT4 inhibitor 49. Porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was synthesized by taking melamine and ammonium bicarbonate through single-step calcination method followed by ultrasonication to obtain exfoliated porous g-C3N4 (2D) nanosheets. Further enhancement of photocatalytic performance, g-C3N4 nanosheet (2D) was further modified with different weight percentage of (1, 3, 5, and 7) of MnO2. The introduction of alpha-MnO2 onto the g-C3N4 nanosheet establishes an interlayer channels to promote the migration of charge carriers through the valence band and conduction band of the prepared composite MnO2@g-C3N4. The transformation of photo induced charge carriers adopt the Z-scheme mechanism rather band-transfer mechanism. The accumulated photo generated electrons in conduction band of g-C3N4 is more electro negative than the potential of (O2/O2-.) and able to reduce oxygen to superoxide (O2-.) radical. At the same time, the holes in valence band of alpha-MnO2 are more electro positive than the potential of (OH-/OH.) and help in oxidate OH- to hydroxyl (OH.) radical. Among all the composites, 3 wt% MnO2 modified g-C3N4 shows the best photocatalytic oxidation efficiency towards all the aromatic alcohols. In presence of visible light, heterojuction formation, and formation of active charged species (OH. and O2-.) were mostly responsible for photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols through free radical mechanism.
