Media coverage of disasters potentially damages mental health. Moreover, its effects may differ as recipients may have different emotional responses toward media. The present study examined whether social capital, known to be protective against mental problems, influences a recipient’s emotional response toward news media broadcasting of natural disasters via newspapers, television and internet in Japan. Three social capital components, social participation, social support and cognitive social capital, were considered in the present study as each component reportedly had different effect on mental health. This nationwide cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 2015 among 1,200 Japanese citizens aged 15 to 79 years who were selected using the multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected via the drop-off pick-up method using a printed structured questionnaire. Negative and positive emotions were classified based on recipients’ responses against news media. Among 1,190 participants who reported emotions toward news media, 30.9% (368) had experienced any natural disasters, 37.4% (445) belonged to at least one formal or informal organization (social participation), 40.2% (478) had high social support, and 68.8% (819) had high cognitive social capital. High social support was associated with both reduced negative emotional response (OR 0.66, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.47-0.93) and increased positive emotional response (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.04-2.12) in multivariate analyses, while high cognitive social capital was only associated with increased positive emotional response (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.11-2.37). These results suggest protective effects of social support and cognitive social capital against news media coverage of natural disasters.

The present paper reports the preparation of zirconium-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) nanocomposites, which were fabricated on the surface of a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheet via an in situ method. The Zr-MOF/rGO-nanocatalyst is successfully synthesized and tested for 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivative with isolated yields (89-97%) within 30 min. We have also synthesized a total of 14 aromatic derivatives of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one compound and evaluated the possible binding of these compounds to the calfthymus DNA (CT-DNA). Furthermore, binding with CT-DNA is examined by the fluorescence spectroscopic technique and molecular docking studies. Fluorescence studies show G12, G13, and G14 compounds and give the best results amongst all synthesized 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives. Allosteric inhibition of CTDNA is performed and evaluated by molecular docking studies based on minimum binding energy, which corresponds to the fluorescence results. These comparative results proved G12, G13, and G14 compounds bind more effectively as compared to 3,8-diamino-5-ethyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium bromide. The characterization of the Zr-MOF/rGO-nanocatalyst is elucidated through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy Raman spectrum, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The present nanocatalyst is readily recycled, reused five times, and found to be stable, with stability confirmed through FTIR spectroscopy and PXRD.

The presented paper concerns current knowledge of commercial and alternative photoinitiator systems used in dentistry. It discusses alternative and commercial photoinitiators and focuses on mechanisms of polymerization process, in vitro measurement methods and factors influencing the degree of conversion and hardness of dental resins. PubMed, Academia.edu, Google Scholar, Elsevier, ResearchGate and Mendeley, analysis from 1985 to 2020 were searched electronically with appropriate keywords. Over 60 articles were chosen based on relevance to this review. Dental light-cured composites are the most common filling used in dentistry, but every photoinitiator system requires proper light-curing system with suitable spectrum of light. Alternation of photoinitiator might cause changing the values of biomechanical properties such as: degree of conversion, hardness, biocompatibility. This review contains comparison of biomechanical properties of dental composites including different photosensitizers among other: camphorquinone, phenanthrenequinone, benzophenone and 1-phenyl-1,2 propanedione, trimethylbenzoyl-diphenylphosphine oxide, benzoyl peroxide. The major aim of this article was to point out alternative photoinitiators which would compensate the disadvantages of camphorquinone such as: yellow staining or poor biocompatibility and also would have mechanical properties as satisfactory as camphorquinone. Research showed there is not an adequate photoinitiator which can be as sufficient as camphorquinone (CQ), but alternative photosensitizers like: benzoyl germanium or novel acylphosphine oxide photoinitiators used synergistically with CQ are able to improve aesthetic properties and degree of conversion of dental resin.

Novel chiral secondary amines bearing a tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine scaffold were created and used for catalytic asymmetric Michael reaction of anthrone with nitroalkenes. The relevant adducts were obtained in good to excellent yields (82%-98%) and enantioselectivities (75%-98%).

Herein is reported a substantially improved synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles by condensation of 1,2-diaminoarenes and aldehydes using methanol as the reaction medium. The developed method afforded moderate to excellent yields (33-96%) at ambient temperature, displays high functional group tolerance, is conducted open to air, and requires only one minute reaction time under catalyst- and additive-free conditions. Moreover, the efficient protocol permits scale-up to multi-gram scale synthesis of benzimidazoles and will become a method of choice when constructing such heterocyclic systems.

A novel structure of sinomenine isoxazole derivatives is synthesised from sinomenine hydrochloride and aromatic aldehydes and requires six steps. 19 target compounds have been obtained in good yields. The sinomenine hydrochloride transforms to 4-alkynyl sinomenine, which is a key intermediate product to synthesise the target sinomenine isoxazole compounds, after a neutralisation reaction with ammonia and substitution reaction with 3-chloropropyne. Another key intermediate product is 1,3-dipole, which can be obtained from aromatic aldehyde. After treatment with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and then sodium carbonate solution, aromatic aldehyde is converted to aldehyde oxime, which reacts with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) to afford aryl hydroximino chloride. 1,3-Dipole is eventually formed in situ while triethylamine (TEA) in DMF is added dropwise. Then 4-alkynyl sinomenine is added to provide the sinomenine isoxazole derivative via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction as the key step. All the target compounds are characterised by melting point, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, HRMS and FT-IR spectroscopy.

Lymphomas (cancers of the lymphatic system) account for 12% of malignant diseases worldwide. Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in which the cancer starts in the immune B-cells. We report the synthesis and preliminary studies on the antiproliferative activity of a library of 9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene based compounds structurally related to the antidepressant drug maprotiline against BL cell lines MUTU-1 and DG-75. Structural modifications were achieved by Diels-Alder reaction of the core 9-(2-nitrovinyl)anthracene with number of dienophiles including maleic anhydride, maleimides, acrylonitrile and benzyne. The antiproliferative activity of these compounds was evaluated in BL cell lines EBV- MUTU-1 and EBV+ DG-75 (chemoresistant). The most potent compounds 13j, 15, 16a, 16b, 16c, 16d and 19a displayed IC50 values in the range 0.17-0.38 mu M against the BL cell line EBV- MUTU-1 and IC50 values in the range 0.45-0.78 mu M against the chemoresistant BL cell line EBV+ DG-75. Compounds 15, 16b and 16c demonstrated potent ROS dependent apoptotic effects on the BL cell lines which were superior to the control drug taxol and showed minimal cytotoxicity to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The results suggest that this class of compounds merits further investigation as antiproliferative agents for BL.

Objective: Androgen metabolism is a key component in therapeutic resistance to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). This study aimed to reveal the significance of genetic polymorphisms in genes involved in androgen metabolism, including CYP17A1, AKR1C3, and HSD17B, on serum testosterone levels during ADT, as well as the prognosis of men undergoing ADT for metastatic prostate cancer (CaP). Materials and methods: This study included 104 Japanese patients with metastatic CaP, for whom serum testosterone data during ADT were available for 80 patients. The association of CYP17A1 (rs743572), AKR1C3 (rs12529), HSD17B1 (rs605059), HSD17B3 (rs2066479), and HSD17B4 (rs7737181) with serum testosterone levels during ADT and prognosis (progression-free survival and overall survival) was examined. Enzymatic activity in AKR1C3 H5Q was examined using recombinant protein. Results: Homozygous wild-type (GG allele; median [interquartile range], 12.0 ng/ml [8.0-19.0 ng/ml]) AKR1C3 rs12529 was associated with higher serum testosterone levels during ADT compared with variant-type (GC/CC alleles; median [interquartile range], 9.0 ng/ml [6.4-10.8 ng/ml]). Consistently, variant-type (GC/CC alleles) AKR1C3 rs12529 showed significantly lower risk of progression (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.47 [0.24-0.96], P = 0.039) compared with homozygous wild-type (GG allele) on multivariate analysis. Meanwhile, other genetic variations were associated with neither serum testosterone during ADT nor prognosis. Enzyme activity of wild-type AKR1C3 was comparable to the H5Q mutant. Conclusions: Taken together, this study demonstrated that AKR1C3 polymorphism, which was associated with serum testosterone levels during ADT, may be a prognostic factor of the progression to castration-resistant prostate cancer in Japanese men with metastatic CaP.
