A novel metal-organic framework (MOF) has been produced via Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O reaction with 3-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (HL) in water, and its chemical formula is {[(Cu-(L)(2)(H2O)(2)] (H2O)(8))(n)}. Due to its high density of coordinately unsaturated sites along with large one-dimensional (1D) hexagonal channels, the activated complex 1 (1a) was explored as the solvent-free heterogeneous catalyst for cyanosilylation under mind conditions. The inhibitory function of compound 1a against the survival rate of OS-732 osteosarcoma cells was evaluated via Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) detection kit. Furthermore, the Annexin V-FITC/PI detection kit and the active oxygen (ROS) detection kit was carried out to determine the cell apoptosis levels and the ROS accumulation in OS-732 osteosarcoma cells after treatment by compound 1a.

Alcohols and ethers were identified as sustainable methine sources for synthesizing quinazolinone and benzimidazole derivatives using a combination of TsOHH2O/O-2 and appropriate bis-nucleophiles for the first time. Deuterium labeling studies clearly proved that the C-2 hydrogen of the synthesized heterocycles came from the methine source. These unique reaction conditions were successfully applied to the synthesis of echinozolinone (2e), 2f (a common precursor of rutaecarpine and (+/-) evodiamine), and dimedazole (6d). Notable features of this method include its low toxicity, use of commercial feedstocks as substrates, low cost, broad functional group tolerance and suitability for a wide range of bis-nucleophilic starting materials.

The development of mild and efficient processes for the selective oxygenation of organic compounds by molecular oxygen (O-2) is key for the synthesis of oxygenates. This paper discloses an atom-efficient synthesis protocol for the photo-oxygenation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) by O-2 to anthraquinone (AQ), which could achieve quantitative AQ yield (100 %) without any extra catalysts or additives under ambient temperature and pressure. A yield of 86.4 % AQ was obtained even in an air atmosphere. Furthermore, this protocol showed good compatibility for the photo-oxidation of several other compounds with similar structures to DHA. From a series of control experiments, free-radical quenching, and electron paramagnetic resonance spin-trapping results, the photo-oxygenation of DHA was probably initiated by its photoexcited state DHA*, and the latter could activate O-2 to a superoxide anion radical (O-2(.-)) through the transfer of its electron. Subsequently, this photo-oxidation was gradually dominated by the oxygenated product AQ as an active photocatalyst obtained from the oxidation of DHA by O-2(.-), and was accelerated with the rapid accumulation of AQ. The present photo-oxidation protocol is a good example of selective oxygenation based on the photoexcited substrate self-activated O-2, which complies well with green chemistry ideals.

A class of zwitterionic organocatalysts based on an amide anion/iminium cation charge pair has been developed. The zwitterions are easily prepared by reacting aziridines with aminopyridines. They are catalytically applicable to transesterifications and dehydrative esterifications. Mechanistic studies reveal that the amide anion and iminium cation work synergistically in activating the reaction partners, with the iminium cationic moiety interacting with the carbonyl substrates through nonclassical hydrogen bonding. The reaction can be applied to large-scale synthesis of biodiesel under mild conditions.

Despite the huge contribution of membrane-based brine and wastewater purification systems in today’s life, biofouling still affects sustainability of membrane engineering. Aimed at reducing membrane modules wastage, the need to study biofouling monitoring as one of contributory factors stemmed from the short time between initial attachment and irreversible biofoulant adhesion. Hence, a membrane for monitoring is introduced to determine the right cleaning time by using fluorescent sensing as a nondestructive and scalable approach. The classical solid-state emissive fluorophore, tetraphenylethylene (TPE), was introduced as a sustainable, safe and sensitive fluorescent indicator in order to show the potential of the method, and polyethersulfone (PES) and non-solvent-induced phase separation method, the most popular material and method, are used to fabricate membrane in industry and academia. Since the employed filler has an aggregation-induced emission (ALE) characteristic, it can track the biofouling throughout the operation. The fabricated membranes have certain characterizations (i.e. morphology assessment, flux, antibiogram, flow cytometry, surface free energy, and protein adsorption) which indicate that hybrid membrane with 5 wt % of TPE has identical biofouling activity compared to neat PES membrane and its optimal luminescence properties make it an appropriate candidate for non-destructive and online biofouling monitoring. BACKGROUND Rectosigmoid endometriosis is an underdiagnosed disease responsible for abdominal pain, transit disorders and rectal bleeding. Two surgical approaches, rectosigmoid bowel resection (segmental or patch) or intramuscular layer dissection (shaving), are available. AIM To assess whether the lesion features observed via preoperative rectosigmoid endoscopic ultrasonography (RS-EUS) might predict the need for bowel resection. METHODS This multicentric retrospective study was conducted on patients with rectosigmoid endometriosis who underwent a curative surgical procedure, evaluated by RS-EUS performed by two trained operators, between January 2012 and March 2018. A univariate statistical analysis was performed on nodules’ RS-EUS features (thickness, width, infiltration of the submucosae, presence of a bump into the digestive lumen and presence of multiple rectosigmoid localizations). A multivariate logistic regression was then performed on the significant results. RESULTS Of the 367 patients, 73 patients with rectosigmoid endometriosis were evaluated by RS-EUS and underwent rectosigmoid surgery. After the univariate analysis was completed, thickness, width and infiltration of the submucosae were identified as potential predictive factors for bowel resection. In a multivariate logistic regression model, only thickness appeared to be a significant [odds ratio (OR) = 1.49, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-2.12, P = 0.028] predictive factor for bowel resection. Receiver operating characteristic analysis performed showed tha t a thickness over 5.20 ram might be used as cut-off with a sensitivity of 76%, a specificity of 81%, and an area under carve = 0.82. The cut-off values for 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity were 0.90 mm and 10.00 mm, respectively. A trend concerning width to predict the need for resection was also observed (OR 1.12, 95% CI: 1.00-1.26, P = 0.054) CONCLUSION The presence of a rectosigmoid nodule of endometriosis greater than 5.20 mm thick on RS-EUS might predict the need for bowel resection.

The present work comprises exploring the efficacies of the chiral organocatalysts employed in the classic Diels-Alder reaction between anthrone and maleimide in generating an enantioselective product. The complete mechanism of the reaction has been figured out by performing the electronic structure calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Our calculations suggest that the reaction commences with the abstraction of acidic proton of anthrone instigated by organocatalysts, (S)-(-)-N-(methyl-2 ‘-pyridyl)-2-(alpha-hydroxyethyl)benzimidazole [Pyr-HEB] and (S)-(-)-N-(methyl-1 ‘-benzotriazolyl)-2-(alpha-hydroxyethyl)benzimidazole [Btz-HEB]. Subsequently, N-methyl maleimide interacts with the nucleophilic carbon of anthrone in a stepwise pathway, either from left-hand side or right-hand side, resulting in the generation of an enantioselective chiral product. A unique feature in the above reaction was that Pyr-HEB and Btz-HEB favoured the formation of SS-product and RR-product, respectively, with high enantioselectivity. The turnaround of enantioselectivity upon changing the catalyst has been attributed to the noncovalent interaction and steric orientation in the molecule during the intermediate reaction steps. An estimated value of degree of enantioselectivity, for both the catalysts, was obtained in accordance with the experimental findings.

Under the acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) reaction condition, the C3-vinyl groups of cinchona alkaloids readily react with each other to form a C-C bond. A novel type of cinchona alkaloid polymers was synthesized from dimeric cinchona squaramides using the Hoveyda-Grubbs’ second-generation catalysts (HG(2)) by means of ADMET reaction. The chiral polymers, containing cinchona squaramide moieties in their main chains, were subsequently employed as catalysts for the enantioselective Michael reaction to give the corresponding chiral adducts in high yields with excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. Both enantiomers from the asymmetric Michael reaction were distinctively prepared while using the polymeric catalysts, possessing pseudoenantiomeric structures. The catalysts were readily recovered from the reaction mixture and recycled several times due to the insolubility of the cinchona-based squaramide polymers.

Fe3O4@SiO2-Pr@L-proline magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and their efficiency as nanocatalyst for the synthesis of new derivatives of bis dapsone derived dihydropyridines via one-pot three-component condensation reaction of various aromatic aldehydes, dimedone and dapsone in aqueous media was investigated. The products were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FT-IR and CHNS analysis. These bis-drugs present high antibacterial activities against both gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) and gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis) bacteria, which are in general more sensitive to compounds with halogen or hydroxyl functional groups.
