Interest in the potential human health of semi-volatile organic chemicals (SVOCs) in indoor and outdoor environments has made the exposure assessment and source appointment a priority. In this study, paired indoor and outdoor atmospheric fine particle (PM2.5) samples were collected from 15 homes representing five typical urban cities in southern China. Four typical SVOCs, including 16 congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 13 congeners of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and 8 congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), as well as tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its three debrominated congeners were analyzed. The highest total concentrations were found for OPFRs, followed by PAHs, PBDEs, and TBBPA. The indoor concentrations of two alkyl-OPFR isomers, tributylphosphate (TBP) and tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), were 4.3 and 11 times higher, respectively, than those of outdoors (p < 0.05). Additionally, the ratios of indoor to outdoor concentrations of alkyl-OPFR isomers varied greatly, suggesting that these compounds originated mainly from different household goods and products used in individual homes. The outdoor concentrations of PAHs and highly brominated PBDEs (BDE-209) typically exceeded the indoor concentrations. Significant correlations were also found between indoor and outdoor PM2.5 samples for PAHs and BDE-209, indicating that outdoor sources such as vehicle exhausts and industrial activities strongly influence their atmospheric occurrence. Additionally, the concentrations of debrominated TBBPA derivatives were higher than those of TBBPA in over 33% of both indoor and outdoor air particle samples. Nevertheless, our results indicated that inhalation exposure to typical SVOCs posed no non-carcinogenic risks to the human body. Although we observed notable differences in the sources, occurrences, and distributions of typical SVOC congeners, more studies using matched samples are still needed to unambiguously identify important indoor and outdoor sources in order to accurately assess the contributions of different sources and the associated human exposure risks. A cellulose sulfonate catalyst (HS-cellulose sulfonate) with high stability, excellent catalytic activity and high acidity value (about 1.55 mmol g(-1)) was successfully prepared by SO3 gas phase sulfonation. The basic morphology and nanostructure of the catalyst were determined by HRTEM, XRD, IR, TG, etc. In addition, the catalyst was applied to the catalytic reaction of a dihydroquinazolinone derivative and a xanthene compound, and very valuable results were obtained. A new series of 1,2,4-triazole was designed, synthesized, and characterized as remarkable antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. These heterocycles have been prepared from the cyclization reactions of Schiff bases 3(a-k) with phenylhydrazine by refluxing under the alkaline medium. The Schiff bases in turn were realized in good yields from the condensation reactions of N-phenylurea with different aromatic aldehydes. The structures of the intermediates 3(a-k) and final heterocycles 4(a-k) have been fully characterized through their spectral parameters.

The polysaccharide of yam was extracted by hot water method and purified by column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of Chinese yam polysaccharide were analyzed by UV, IR, GPC, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR spectra. The results showed that Chinese yam polysaccharide had alpha-D-Gluc-(1 -> 4) glycoside bond, and the C2 hydroxyl group was replaced by ethoxyl group. The average molecular weight was determined to be 7.28 x 104. It showed that The scavenging effect of yam polysaccharide on hydroxyl radicals was similar to VC. The sulfated polysaccharide (S-P), phosphorylated polysaccharide (P-P), carboxymethylated polysaccharide (C-P) and acetylated polysaccharide (A-P) were identified by IR and NMR. The results showed that P and its derivatives showed good antioxidant activity. Especially, their scavenging ability to hydroxyl radicals reached the level of VC. This laid a theoretical foundation for the development of yam polysaccharide-related foods.

Chiral hyperbranched polymers (HBP) containing cinchona alkaloids were synthesized using a Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling polymerization reaction between a cinchona squaramide dimer and tri- or tetrasubstituted aromatic iodides. This is a new type of polymeric chiral organocatalyst. We found that the as-obtained chiral HBPs show excellent catalytic activity in the asymmetric Michael reaction. Almost perfect enantioselectivity (>99% ee) was achieved in the reaction of beta-ketoester and trans-beta-nitrostyrene. In the present study, different derivatives of thymol (1) viz. hydrazide (2), oxadiazole thiol (3), triazole thione (4), hydrazones (5-7), and beta-lactams (8-10) were synthesized. All synthesized compounds were identified and characterized using elemental analysis, UV-Visible, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and IR spectroscopic techniques. Synthesized thymol derivatives were evaluated for antifungal potential against phytopathogenic fungi Fusarium moniliforme, Rhizoctonia solani, and Dreschlera maydis of maize in comparison to recommended standards in terms of percent inhibition and ED50 values. Thymol was more effective as compared to its derivatives against all three tested fungi. Hydrazones (5-7) and beta-lactams (8-10), having m-NO2 substituted phenyl ring (6, 9), were less effective as compared to o-NO2 and p-NO2 analogs against F. moniliforme and R. solani, however, the reverse trend was observed against D. maydis. Thymol and its derivatives were also tested for insecticidal activity against stored grain (chickpea) insect Callosobruchus chinensis and various parameters viz. egg laying, adult emergence, and grain damage were recorded and compared. Compounds having oxadiazole thiol (3) and triazole thione (4) moiety showed promising effects against insect C. chinensis.

In soluble methane monooxygenase enzymes (sMMO), dioxygen (O-2) is activated at a diiron(II) center to form an oxodiiron(IV) intermediate Q that performs the challenging oxidation of methane to methanol. An analogous mechanism of O-2 activation at mono- or dinuclear iron centers is rare in the synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a mononuclear non-heme iron(II)cyclam complex, 1-trans, that activates O-2 to form the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex, 2-trans, via a mechanism reminiscent of the O-2 activation process in sMMO. The conversion of 1-trans to 2-trans proceeds via the intermediate formation of an iron(III)-superoxide species 3, which could be trapped and spectroscopically characterized at -50 degrees C. Surprisingly, 3 is a stronger oxygen atom transfer (OAT) agent than 2-trans; 3 performs OAT to 1-trans or PPh 3 to yield 2-trans quantitatively. Furthermore, 2-trans oxidizes the aromatic C-H bonds of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, which, together with the strong OAT ability of 3, represents new domains of oxoiron(IV) and superoxoiron(III) reactivities.

Heat processing of ready-to-drink beverages is required to ensure a microbiologically safe product, however, this can result in the loss of bioactive compounds responsible for functionality. The objective of this study was to establish the thermal stability of a novel dihydrochalcone, 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxyphloretin (2), 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosylphloretin (3) and other Cyclopia subternata phenolic compounds, in model solutions with or without citric acid and ascorbic acid. The solutions were heated at 93, 121 and 135 degrees C, relevant to pasteurisation, commercial sterilisation and ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurisation, respectively. For most compounds, the acids decreased the second order reaction rate constants, up to 27 times. Compound 2 (46.29 +/- 0.53 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)), and to a lesser extent compound 3 (5.94 +/- 0.01 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)) were the most thermounstable compounds when treated at 135 degrees C without added acids. Even though differential effects were observed for compounds at different temperatures and formulations, overall, the phenolic compounds were most stable under UHT pasteurisation conditions.

A facile and green one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones, using microwave irradiation, has been developed. Dihydroquinazolinones were synthesized from 2-aminobenzamide derivatives and various aldehydes in aqueous solution under base and catalyst free reaction conditions. The desired products, from aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes substrates, were obtained in 5 minutes with up to 99 % isolated yields.
