A simple, green, and efficient protocol has been developed for the synthesis of biologically active 1,4dihydropyrano[2,3c]pyrazole derivatives via one-pot four-component reaction of various substituted benzaldehydes, hydrazine hydrate or phenylhydrazine, ethyl acetoacetate, and malononitrile in aqueous medium in the presence of sugarcane bagasse ash-based silica-supported boric acid (SBA-SiO2-H3BO3) as a solid acid catalyst. The advantages of this methodology are the use of cost-effective and nontoxic catalyst, short reaction time, operational simplicity, high yields (90-95%), availability of silica source, and green protocol.

The ring-expanded strategy in nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) with the acceptor-donor-acceptor backbone has been reported to be an effective method to improve the fill factor (FF), open circuit voltage (VOC), and short circuit current (JSC) simultaneously in organic photovoltaics. However, design control is still missing in the ring-expanded strategy, and is urgently needed to further develop the origins and rules. To give insight into this strategy, a detailed theoretical study of the ring-expanded mechanism is performed on the systems comprising different 9,9 ‘-bifluorenylidene-based cores and 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone group. Some main parameters involved in photoelectric conversion mechanism under the donor excitation (DE) and/or acceptor excitation (AE) are assessed by changing the position and size of ring-expanded modes. The results show that the external ring-expanded modes can not only maintain the original advantage as much as possible, variations in sizes and positions also offer them an opportunity to regulate the aforementioned parameters systematically, leading to better improvement regardless of AE or DE. Thus, the steady improvement in performance mentioned previously is the key to overcoming the negative correlation among FF, VOC, and JSC. This insight and discovery of the ring-expanded strategy provides new design approaches for the next generation of NFAs.

A novel metal-free, reusable, and green catalytic system comprising hydrothermal carbon microspheres (HCMSs) supporting N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) was developed and employed in the aerobic oxidation of alcohol. Hierarchically porous HCMSs with good monodispersity were produced by the hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose and designed NaOH-impregnated calcination under a static air atmosphere. The meso- and macroporous pores on HCMSs make up 71% of the total pore volume. The covalent immobilization of NHPI onto HCMSs was first accomplished by grafting hyperbranched polyquaternary amine via repetitive ring-opening reactions of diglycidyl ether and subsequent amidation with 4-carboxy-NHPI. Owing to the cocatalysis of grafted quaternary ammonium salt, a designed heterogeneous catalyst has superior performance to free NHPI in the oxidation of 2-phenylethanol. The established catalytic system achieved 42% conversion and up to 96% selectivity of acetophenone at 90 degrees C under 1 atm O-2 for 20 h and presented a versatile catalytic effect for diversified alcohols. Immobilized NHPI could be facilely recycled via simple filtration and displayed good stability for six cycles without a discernible decrease of reactivity or damage of catalyst morphology in repeated oxidation test.

Fifteen chalcone derivatives having D-A-D, D-A-A and A-A-D architectures have been synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction and characterized by UV-Vis, IR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and Mass spectrometry. In order to unambiguously establish the structure-activity relationship for the non-linear optical activity of these compounds, for the first time to our knowledge, we use the femtosecond degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) technique to quantify and compare the third-order non-linear optical (NLO) activity of all the 15 compounds, under identical conditions. The second harmonics generation (SHG) efficiencies for all the compounds have also been evaluated using the Kurtz-Perry powder method. Among the compounds that we have synthesized here, the ones with A-A-D architecture show the highest NLO activity. Our results show that the NLO activity of a compound with A-A-D architecture can be further enhanced by incorporating a substituent with strong electron withdrawing ability on ring A and strong electron donating substituent on ring B. The results of the in silico studies that we have carried out correlate well with our experimental findings. The compounds (E)-3-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one with the compound code (4-N(CH3)(2)-4 ‘-NO2) and (E)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one with the compound code (4-MeO-4 ‘-NO2) show the highest NLO activity among the compounds we have reported here.

Click chemistry is a concept in which modular synthesis is used to rapidly find new molecules with desirable properties(1). Copper(I)-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) triazole annulation and sulfur(VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx) catalysis are widely regarded as click reactions(2-4), providing rapid access to their products in yields approaching 100% while being largely orthogonal to other reactions. The reaction uses just one equivalent of a simple diazotizing species, fluorosulfuryl azide(6-11) (FSO2N3), and enables the preparation of over 1,200 azides on 96-well plates in a safe and practical manner.
