In recent years, heavy metal ions and nitroaromatic explosives in environmental pollutants have been a serious threat to human health due to their high toxicity, carcinogenicity, and nondegradability. The detection of metal ions and nitroaromatics has become an urgent problem. In this paper, a new water stable luminescent Eu-based metal-organic framework ([Eu(L)(DMF)(2)](n)) was prepared by the reaction of rigid ligand H3L (3,5-bis-(3-carboxyphenoxy)benzoic acid) and Eu (NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O under solvothermal conditions. Luminescent detection of the nitroaromatic compounds and metal ions showed that the complex had high sensitivity to Fe3+, o-nitrophenol, p-nitrophenol, and m-nitrophenol.

The present protocol uncover a new strategy to synthesize highly efficient solid TEMPO based catalyst in which 4-oxo-TEMPO was covalently tethered to the surface of amine functionalized magnetic titania. The chemical nature and structure of the synthesized catalyst was authenticated by various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, field emission gun scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometer. FT-IR confirmed the immobilization of titania, APTES, and TEMPO on the magnetic nanoparticles. Thermal behaviour of the catalyst was studied by TGA. Morphology of the catalyst was investigated by FEG-SEM and HR-TEM analysis. Furthermore, loading content of TEMPO on the catalyst was quantified by elemental analysis and found to be 0.61 mmol/g. Magnetic properties of the catalyst were investigated by VSM analysis. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalyst has been investigated for the oxidative synthesis of benzimidazoles, oxidative aromatization of 1,4-dihydropyridines, and oxidative trimerization of indoles using molecular oxygen. In addition, the catalyst could be successfully recycled and reused up to five times without the prominent loss of catalytic activity.

Continuous flow catalysis using a microfluidic reactor with gel-bound proline organocatalysts is an attractive approach in organic synthesis due to interesting advantages such as the permanent production of catalyst-free products and the easy product isolation by evaporation. Further advantages are the online detection of reactions and an adjustment of reaction parameters while the reaction is already running. Herein the formation of differently substituted aldol products within minutes at mild conditions in good to almost quantitative yields is described. The effects of different solvent mixtures and temperatures on the conversion and selectivity are analyzed in detail by NMR as well as the relationship between the height of the polymer structures and the conversion behavior of the asymmetric aldol reaction of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde and cyclohexanone. The applicability of this system is demonstrated for a wide range of differently substituted nitrobenzaldehydes. It is shown that the described reactor setup delivers high conversion and good selectivity over up to 144 hours and that a highly reusable system was established.

A highly enantio- and diastereoselective thiourea-catalyzed dearomatization of isoquinolines employing N-tert-butylhydrazones as neutral alpha-azo carbanions and masked acyl anion equivalents has been developed. Experimental and computational data supports the generation of highly ordered complexes wherein the chloride behaves as a template for the catalyst, the hydrazone reagent, and the isoquinolinium cation, providing excellent stereocontrol in the formation of two contiguous stereogenic centers. In this study, the novel bifunctional homochiral thiourea-L-prolinamides 1-4, tertiary amino-L-prolinamide 5, and bis-L-prolinamides 6 and 7 were prepared from enantiomerically pure (11R,12R)-11,12-diamino-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene 8 and (11S,12S)-11,12-diamino-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene ent-8. Highly enantioselective and diastereoselective aldolic intermolecular reactions (up to 95% enantiomeric excess, 93:7 anti/syn) between aliphatic ketones (20 equiv) and a range of aromatic aldehydes (1 equiv) were successfully carried out in the presence of water (10 equiv) and monochloroacetic acid (10 mol%), solvent-free conditions, at room temperature over 24 h using organocatalysts 1-7 (5 mol%). Stereoselective induction using density functional theory-based methods was consistent with the experimental data.

N-Tosylhydrazones have proven to be versatile synthons over the past several decades. However, to our knowledge, the construction of isoxazolines based on N-tosylhydrazones has not been examined. Herein, we report the first demonstrations of [2 + 2 + 1] cycloaddition reactions that allow the facile synthesis of isoxazolines, employing N-tosylhydrazones, tert-butyl nitrite (TBN) and alkenes as reactants. This process represents a new type of cycloaddition reaction with a distinct mechanism that does not involve the participation of nitrile oxides. This approach is both general and practical and exhibits a wide substrate scope, nearly universal functional group compatibility, tolerance of moisture and air, the potential for functionalization of complex bioactive molecules and is readily scaled up. Both control experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that this transformation proceeds via the in situ generation of a nitronate from the coupling of N-tosylhydrazone and TBN, followed by cycloaddition with an alkene and subsequent elimination of a tert-butyloxy group to give the desired isoxazoline.

Fe3O4@SiO2-Pr@L-proline magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and their efficiency as nanocatalyst for the synthesis of new derivatives of bis dapsone derived dihydropyridines via one-pot three-component condensation reaction of various aromatic aldehydes, dimedone and dapsone in aqueous media was investigated. The products were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FT-IR and CHNS analysis. These bis-drugs present high antibacterial activities against both gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) and gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis) bacteria, which are in general more sensitive to compounds with halogen or hydroxyl functional groups.

The loss of neurons is strongly correlated with aging and aging-associated disorders. In this study, cell viability assays and mitochondrial function were performed to evaluate the effect of new spiro-pyrazole derivatives, prepared from aldehydes and 3-amino-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one, on neuroprotection in an in vitro model of dopaminergic cell death induced by 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+). The percentages of neuroprotection by derivatives were found between 21.26% and 52.67% at selected concentrations (10-50 mu M) with compound 4d exerting the best neuroprotective effect. The results show that the studied spiropyrazolones perform important roles in dopaminergic neuroprotection and can be used for potential new therapies in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s disease. Liquid phase tandem Knoevenagel-Michael condensation of various aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with barbituric acid or 2-thiobarbituric acid and malononitrile was studied in a one-pot three-component reaction. For the first time, TMDP was employed as a safe and efficient solvent and/or catalyst in the liquid and aqueous ethanol medium, respectively, for the practical and eco-friendly Knoevenagel-Michael condensation. The reactions were carried out by using greener procedures, including a) the use of TMDP as an N-heterocycle organocatalyst in a green medium including water and ethanol (1:1 v/v) at reflux temperature, and b) the use of TMDP as a dual solvent-catalyst at 65 degrees C in the absence of any solvent. High to excellent yields of the desired pyrano[2,3-d] pyrimidinones were obtained under the two earlier mentioned conditions. The current methodologies have advantages, including (a) avoiding hazardous, toxic, volatile, and flammable materials and solvents, (b) avoiding tedious processes, harsh conditions, and multiple steps for the preparation of catalysts, (c) using a less toxic and noncorrosive catalyst, (d) minimizing hazardous waste generation and simple workup process, and (e) high recyclability of TMDP. Another important result of this work is that the TMDP can be a promising alternative for toxic, volatile, and flammable base reagents such as piperidine and triethylamine in liquid phase organic syntheses owing to its unique properties such as being less toxic, nonflammable, and nonvolatile, and having a low melting point, broad liquid range temperature, high thermal stability, and safe handling and storage.
