Hypothesis: It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components. Experiments: The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water. Findings: The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a double-separation-strategy. A green synthetic route to the facile one-pot multicomponent synthesis of pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines and pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines have been developed using magnetized deionized water (MDW) as a green solvent under catalyst-free conditions. All reactions carried out in a short period of time and the products are obtained in high-to-excellent yields. The developed synthetic technique offers numerous advantages including eco-friendly, clean synthesis, simplicity, low cost, short reaction times, high reaction yields, and easy workup compared to the traditional synthetic method. Moreover, the reaction rates were followed spectrophotometrically by monitoring the changes in the absorption spectrum of the reaction mixture in ordinary deionized water and MDW.

A series of 1-[aryl-(thiazol-2-ylamino)-methyl]-naphthalen-2-ol derivatives were synthesized using porcine pancreatic lipase as a catalyst. The major assets of this methodology were use of biocatalyst, non-toxic organic medium, mild reaction condition and good-to-excellent yield of desired products. The synthesized Betti bases were evaluated for in vitro anti-cholinesterase activity. Test compounds exhibited potential inhibitory activities towards AChE (IC50 = 0.82 to 4.27 mu M) as well as BuChE (IC50 = 2.18 to 9.64 mu M). Compound 4g exhibited highest inhibitory activity for both AChE (IC50 = 0.82 +/- 0.05 mu M) and BuChE (IC50 = 2.18 +/- 0.21 mu M) when compared to standard reference drug galantamine inferring that it acts a dual AChE/BuChE inhibitor. Kinetic studies of compound 4g suggested a mixed-type inhibition towards both AChE and BuChE with K-i values of 8.82 mu M and 12.41 mu M, respectively. Further, cell viability assay that compound 4(a-j) do not impart any toxicity to N2a cells. In addition, molecular docking studies were performed to corroborate the biological results. An efficient and clean method was developed for the three components, one-pot synthesis of pyrimidinone/thione derivatives using cyclopentanone, variety of aromatic aldehydes, and urea/thiourea by using cyanuric chloride catalyzed Biginelli-type reaction. The reactions proceed under room temperature in presence of cyanuric catalyst in acetonitrile solvent. Under similar conditions, urea/thiourea exhibited similar behavior and aliphatic aldehydes showed lower reactivity than aromatic aldehydes.

A new heterogeneous photoredox nanocatalyst WO3/ZnO@NH2-EY (EY: eosin Y) was fabricated and characterized employing some instrumental techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, ICP, TGA, and SEM. The photocatalytic efficiency of the prepared material was investigated in the preparation of various chromeno[4,3-b]chromenes via a simple and practical method. The chromene derivatives were prepared through the condensation of aromatic aldehydes, dimedone, and coumarin under an open-air atmosphere in the presence of a green LED under solventless conditions. The significant advantages of this new method include low reaction time, easy work-up, cost-effective, wide substrate scope, excellent yield, and complete atom economy of the final products. Moreover, the prepared photocatalyst could be frequently recovered up to four times with only a little decrease in the catalytic activity. Furthermore, the progress of the condensation reaction is demonstrated to occur via a radical mechanism, which shows that reactive species such as O-2(-) and OH together with h(+) would be involved in the photocatalytic process. Stability and reusability studies also warranty good reproducibility of the nanocatalyst for at least 4 runs. Eventually, a hot filtration test ensured that the nanohybrid catalyst is stable in the reaction medium and its catalytic activity originates from the whole undecomposed conjugated composite.

The design of functionalized porous materials is an important research direction in material science, especially for fluorine-containing materials with enhanced thermal/oxidative stability, lower dielectric constants, and better gas-selective permeation. In this work, a series of poly(phenyl-alkane)s of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-xR) were synthesized by the methanesulfonic acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts hydroxyalkylation polycondensation of contorted and rigid multibenzene and benzaldehyde derivatives. The PIM-xR exhibited good thermal stability, excellent solution processability, and high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas (400-1200 m(2) g(-1)). The physicochemical properties and applications of PIM-xR could be tuned by the type, quantity, distribution, and postmodification of substituents on the benzaldehyde derivatives. Unlike other contorted and rigid multibenzene derivatives, only electron-rich spirobiindane derivatives directly produced soluble, linear, high-molecular-weight polymers without cross-linking because spirobiindane possesses three t-butyl-like structural units that provide large steric hindrance at potential reactive sites. Subsequently, a series of fluorinated PIMs (PIM-xF) with different fluorine contents and distributions were explored, and the relationship between the microporosity of PIM-xR and degrees of rotational freedom of the polymer chains was analyzed using these PIM-xF. Flexible and transparent PIM-xF membranes were easily obtained by solution processing and exhibited high gas permeabilities and moderate permeability selectivity. In particular, the CO2/N-2 separation performance of the PIM-5F membrane exceeded the 2008 Robeson’s upper bound (P-CO2 = 3240 barrer and alpha((CO2/N2)) = 27.9). This work provides a facile method for the precise design and preparation of fluorinated or other functionalized porous materials for environmental and energy applications.

A series of 2-amino-4H-chromenes by combining dimedone, different substituted aromatic aldehydes and malononitrile and 5-substituted-1H-tetrazoles by combining variable aldehydes, hydroxylamine hydrochloride and sodium azide have been efficiently synthesized in presence of ethylenediamine functionalized cellulose acetate as a solid base catalyst i.e Cellulose acetate[1,2-ethylenediamine][CAEDA]. This catalyst is low-cost, non-toxic, unexplored, easily available, reusable, eco-friendly in nature. This synthesized solid base catalyst has been characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), themogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) spectroscopic techniques. The new catalytic method exhibits some noteworthy advantages such as short reaction time, high yields, easy workup and purification steps, simple preparation method which makes this strategy more useful for the synthesis of chromene and tetrazole derivatives then earlier methods.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and requires intense and growing research investments from the public and private sectors. This is expected to lead to the development of new medicines. A determining factor in this process is the structural understanding of molecules with potential anticancer properties. Since the major compounds used in cancer therapies fail to encompass every spectrum of this disease, there is a clear need to research new molecules for this purpose. As it follows, we have studied the class of quinolinones that seem effective for such therapy. This paper describes the structural elucidation of a novel dihydroquinoline by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy characterization. Topology studies were carried through Hirshfeld surfaces analysis and molecular electrostatic potential map; electronic stability was evaluated from the calculated energy of frontier molecular orbitals. Additionally, in silico studies by molecular docking indicated that this dihydroquinoline could act as an anticancer agent due to their higher binding affinity with human aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH 1A1). Tests in vitro were performed for VERO (normal human skin keratinocytes), B16F10 (mouse melanoma), and MDA-MB-231 (metastatic breast adenocarcinoma), and the results certified that compound as a potential anticancer agent.
