The polysaccharide of yam was extracted by hot water method and purified by column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of Chinese yam polysaccharide were analyzed by UV, IR, GPC, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR spectra. The results showed that Chinese yam polysaccharide had alpha-D-Gluc-(1 -> 4) glycoside bond, and the C2 hydroxyl group was replaced by ethoxyl group. The average molecular weight was determined to be 7.28 x 104. It showed that The scavenging effect of yam polysaccharide on hydroxyl radicals was similar to VC. The sulfated polysaccharide (S-P), phosphorylated polysaccharide (P-P), carboxymethylated polysaccharide (C-P) and acetylated polysaccharide (A-P) were identified by IR and NMR. The results showed that P and its derivatives showed good antioxidant activity. Especially, their scavenging ability to hydroxyl radicals reached the level of VC. This laid a theoretical foundation for the development of yam polysaccharide-related foods.

10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

A series of pendant anthracene-functionalized ethylene/propylene copolymer rubbers (EPRs) with UV-light response and self-healing properties are prepared in this work. The reversible crosslinked networks are achieved based on the highly reversible nature of [4 + 4] cycloaddition of anthracene derivatives. The reversible crosslinking process is characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer, which gives a high conversion yield of approximate to 90% as well as the reversibility of approximate to 70%. This reversible reaction is successfully applied to the self-healing of EPR material. The healing efficiency is evaluated quantitatively by tensile test measurement. In terms of stress at break, the healing efficiency of crosslinked EPR with anthracene content of 5.7 mol% can reach 82.9%. The anthracene-functionalized EPR might have a potential prospect of application in self-healing field.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread organic contaminants in the environment, much being accumulated in soils. Although their concentrations in large cities have been studied, their levels in small cities were less studied. This study determined the concentrations, distributions, and sources of 16 USEPA priority PAHs (legacy PAHs) and 6 emerging PAHs in urban soils of four small cities. A total of 100 soil samples were collected in Florida, USA. The average Sigma 16-PAHs in urban soils of Clay county, Ocala, Pensacola, and West Palm Beach were 1821, 2748, 3115 and 4055 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Based on benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaP-EQ), the 7 USEPA carcinogenic PAHs (7cPAHs) and 3 emerging carcinogenic PAHs (3cPAHs) in urban soils in Clay County averaged 223 and 3703, Ocala 319 and 4521, Pensacola 302 and 5423, and West Palm Beach 449 and 5916 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Although Sigma 7cPAHs in 87-89% of samples were lower than the Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs) for industrial sites at 700 mu g kg(-1), Sigma 3cPAHs were 13-18 times greater than Sigma 7cPAHs. Based on the PMF model and molecular diagnostic ratios, soil PAHs were dominated by similar sources in small cities, mainly from pyrogenic sources including biomass, coal and coke combustion and vehicle emissions. It is important to evaluate both legacy and emerging PAHs concentrations in urban soils when considering soil remediation and human health risk assessment. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Background: Aloe vera is commonly used in the primary health care of human beings since time immemorial. It is an herb widely used in various traditional systems of medicine worldwide. Systematic and scientific investigation on A. vera as a medicinal plant has drawn considerable attention, and many laboratories are involved in isolation, characterization and evaluation of phytoconstituents for their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the phytochemical, biological and medicinal attributes of A. vera against various diseases with special emphasis on underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: PubMed, EBOSCO host, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane library databases were utilized to search literature published between1977 and 2019 (fill March). Major keywords used in various combinations included: Aloe vera, phytochemistry, metabolism, pharmacological activity, prevention, treatment, health, disease, in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies. Results: Various biological and pharmacological activities of A. vera, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and skin-protective and wound-healing responses, have been attributed to the presence of many active compounds, including anthraquinones, anthrones, chromones, flavonoids, amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Conclusion: Based on various preclinical studies, A. vera constituents have enormous potential to prevent and treat various diseases. Randomized clinical trials are needed to understand the full therapeutic potential of this unique medicinal plant.

We report herein an efficient method to synthesize triptycenes by the reaction of benzynes and anthranoxides, which are electron-rich and readily prepared from the corresponding anthrones. Using this method, 1,9-syn-substituted triptycenes were regioselectively obtained employing 3-methoxybenzynes. This method was also applied to synthesize pentiptycenes. A DFT study revealed that the cycloaddition of lithium anthranoxide and benzyne proceeds stepwise.

Objective: How the interactions between Candida albicans and Actinomyces viscosus contributed to the root caries was not clear. This study aimed to investigate their cross-kingdom interactions on the biomass and the cariogenic virulence in dual-species biofilms. Design: Suspensions of C. albicans and A. viscosus were formed the mono and polymicrobial biofilms in vitro. Crystal violet assay, viable plate count, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence in situ hybridization were used to analyze the biomass and biofilm structure. Glycolytic pH drop and the spectrophotometric method were used to evaluate the acid production and hydroxyapatite dissolution, respectively. The exopolysaccharide production was measured by the anthrone-sulfuric acid method, while the adhesion force was measured by atomic force microscopy. Results: The biomass and colony-forming units of mixed-species were significantly increased compared to that of the mono-species at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h. The structure of dual-species biofilm had more microcolonies and was much denser. The dual-species biofilms significantly decreased the pH value and damaged the hydroxyapatite compared with the mono-species biofilms at various time points, indicating the strong cariogenic virulence. Moreover, the dual-species biofilms significantly enhanced the exopolysaccharide production and adhesion force suggesting the increase of biofilm adhesion. Conclusions: Cross-kingdom interactions of C. albicans and A. viscosus significantly elevated the biomass and cariogenic virulence of dual-species biofilm.

Laccases produced by Leucoagaricus gongylophorus act in lignocellulose degradation and detoxification processes. Therefore, the use of L. gongylophorus laccase (Lac1Lg) was proposed in this work for degradation of anthracene and others polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons without the use of mediators. Degradation reactions were performed in buffer aqueous solution with 10 ppm of anthracene and other PAHs, Tween-20 in 0.25% v/v and a laccase preparation of 50 U. The optimum condition (pH 6.0 and 30 degrees C) was determined by response surface methodology with an excellent coefficient of determination (R-2) of 0.97 and an adjusted coefficient of determination (R-adj(2)) of 0.93. In addition, the employment of the mediator ABTS decreased the anthracene biodegradation from 44 +/- 1% to 30 +/- 1%. This optimum pH of 6.0 suggests that the reaction occurs by a hydrogen atom transfer mechanism. Additionally, in 24 h Lac1Lg biodegraded 72 +/- 1% anthracene, 40 +/- 3% fluorene and 25 +/- 3% phenanthrene. The yellow laccase from L. gongylophorus biodegraded anthracene and produced anthrone and anthraquinone, which are interesting compounds for industrial applications. Moreover, this enzyme also biodegraded the PAHs phenanthrene and fluorene justifying the study of Lac1Lg for bioremediation of these compounds in the environment.
