Novel chiral secondary amines bearing a tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine scaffold were created and used for catalytic asymmetric Michael reaction of anthrone with nitroalkenes. The relevant adducts were obtained in good to excellent yields (82%-98%) and enantioselectivities (75%-98%).

The present work comprises exploring the efficacies of the chiral organocatalysts employed in the classic Diels-Alder reaction between anthrone and maleimide in generating an enantioselective product. The complete mechanism of the reaction has been figured out by performing the electronic structure calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Our calculations suggest that the reaction commences with the abstraction of acidic proton of anthrone instigated by organocatalysts, (S)-(-)-N-(methyl-2 ‘-pyridyl)-2-(alpha-hydroxyethyl)benzimidazole [Pyr-HEB] and (S)-(-)-N-(methyl-1 ‘-benzotriazolyl)-2-(alpha-hydroxyethyl)benzimidazole [Btz-HEB]. Subsequently, N-methyl maleimide interacts with the nucleophilic carbon of anthrone in a stepwise pathway, either from left-hand side or right-hand side, resulting in the generation of an enantioselective chiral product. A unique feature in the above reaction was that Pyr-HEB and Btz-HEB favoured the formation of SS-product and RR-product, respectively, with high enantioselectivity. The turnaround of enantioselectivity upon changing the catalyst has been attributed to the noncovalent interaction and steric orientation in the molecule during the intermediate reaction steps. An estimated value of degree of enantioselectivity, for both the catalysts, was obtained in accordance with the experimental findings.

Kinetics of thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) of poly(diphenylenephthalide) (PDPh) films has been studied using mathematical modelling and DFT approximation. TSL of PDPh-film was considered to be arising from irradiative deactivation of diphenylene (DP) fragment of polymer chain in excited state formed upon recombination of the spatial separated ion-radical pairs generated by photoexcitation. Two parallel monomolecular transformations leading to excited DP have been revealed: the first path is characterized by the activation parameters of the kinetic rate constant k1 which equal to Al ti 105 sec 1 and Eat ti 70 kJ mol(-1). This path may be interpreted in terms of mechanical relaxation theory by segmental polymer mobility as electron transfer (ET) from phthalide (Ph) anion-to DP cation-radical. The second channel is supposed to be consist of two consecutive ET from triarylmethyl anion-radical to phthalide neutral (A2 ti 1 sec 1, Ea2 ti 20 kJ mol(-1)), and then to DP cation-radical (A3 N 104 sec 1, E,3 N 40 kJ mol(-1)) of the polymer chain indicating y- and fl-relaxation, respectively. The revealed mechanistic steps and electron retention efficiency estimated in B97-2/6-311 + G(d,p) approximation for the most probable anion-radicals may point out the key role of domino quantum tunneling in transfer and recombination of charges in PDPh films.

Voltammetric sensor using a symmetrical derivative of anthrone3 (1,7-diamino-3,9-dibutyl benzo[1,2,3-de:4,5,6-d’e’]diquinoline-2,8(3H,9H)-dione) (SPE-A) has been developed as a probe for Hg(II) ions. Performance of the probe as screen-printed electrode modified with the receptor (SPE-A) has been compared with anthrone3 in solution phase, using 1:1 water-acetonitrile solvent system. Anthrone3 displayed an electrochemically quasi-reversible nature in voltammograms with both the systems and is presented as a novel disposable voltammetric sensor for mercury ions. Upon interaction with cations, both the electrode systems showed sensitivity towards Hg2+ ions with a lower detection limit of 0.61 mu M. The magnitude of the voltammetric current with the SPE-A exhibited three times the current obtained with a bare glassy carbon electrode (GC). Kinetic performance of the SPE-A electrode is better than the GC electrode. The morphological studies indicate reusability of the electrodes.

Ball milling of calcium carbide (CaC2) enables the reaction of its ethynyl moiety with organic electrophiles. This was realized simply by co-milling CaC(2)with organic substrates in a sealed jar without the need for an additive or a catalyst. Various ketones including those bearing alpha-hydrogens were ethynylated in good yields at short reaction times. Aryl halides are also amenable substrates for this protocol as they furnish aryl ethynes through a benzyne intermediate. This method offers a practical and cheap alternative to the established procedures for introducing ethynyl functionalities.

Using green chemical method a series of fifteen systematically substituted 3-(9-substituted anthracen-10-yl)-1-(4-phenyl substituted)prop-2-en-1-one derivatives having high nonlinear absorption coefficient have been synthesized. The nonlinear absorption properties of these compounds were studied using nanosecond pulses at 532 nm wavelength. All 15 derivatives are found to show high nonlinear absorption in the range of 35-640 cm/GW. Among these the derivatives with-NO2 as one of the substitution group show higher nonlinear absorption. The origin of high nonlinear absorption with low linear absorption in the compounds has been attributed to two-step two-photon absorption process. We have shown that the energy bands of these compounds are distributed such that for excitation at 532 nm they have strong nonlinear absorption. These properties of the reported compounds make them a potential candidate for biological imaging and other applications which are based on nonlinear absorption. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread organic contaminants in the environment, much being accumulated in soils. Although their concentrations in large cities have been studied, their levels in small cities were less studied. This study determined the concentrations, distributions, and sources of 16 USEPA priority PAHs (legacy PAHs) and 6 emerging PAHs in urban soils of four small cities. A total of 100 soil samples were collected in Florida, USA. The average Sigma 16-PAHs in urban soils of Clay county, Ocala, Pensacola, and West Palm Beach were 1821, 2748, 3115 and 4055 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Based on benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaP-EQ), the 7 USEPA carcinogenic PAHs (7cPAHs) and 3 emerging carcinogenic PAHs (3cPAHs) in urban soils in Clay County averaged 223 and 3703, Ocala 319 and 4521, Pensacola 302 and 5423, and West Palm Beach 449 and 5916 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Although Sigma 7cPAHs in 87-89% of samples were lower than the Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs) for industrial sites at 700 mu g kg(-1), Sigma 3cPAHs were 13-18 times greater than Sigma 7cPAHs. Based on the PMF model and molecular diagnostic ratios, soil PAHs were dominated by similar sources in small cities, mainly from pyrogenic sources including biomass, coal and coke combustion and vehicle emissions. It is important to evaluate both legacy and emerging PAHs concentrations in urban soils when considering soil remediation and human health risk assessment. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

BACKGROUND Ara h 1 is a major food allergen in peanuts. Recently, many studies have revealed that the Maillard reaction (MR) affects the allergenicity of food proteins. RESULTS To investigate the influence of the MR on the allergenicity of Ara h 1, R-Ara h 1 was processed with glucose in dry heating conditions for different periods. The extent of the MR was assessed by four methods. The changes in secondary and tertiary structures were characterized through spectroscopy assays. Advanced glycation end products (AGE) structures were identified by protein sample dry heating for 60 min, indicating the formation of AGE-Ara h 1. Simulated gastric fluid (SGF) digestion analysis showed that AGE-Ara h 1 has higher resistance to peptic digestion than R-Ara h 1. The BALB/c mouse model was also utilized to explore the effect of the MR on the allergenicity of Ara h 1, and the results showed that the Th2-type cytokines, antibodies, and histamine content increased, and there was a greater degree of degranulation of rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells in the AGE-Ara h 1 group compared with the R-Ara h 1 group. CONCLUSION During the process of dry heating, proteins participated in the MR with changes in secondary and tertiary structures. The condition applying a temperature of 100 degrees C for 60 min caused the formation of AGE-Ara h 1. Simulated gastric fluid digestion analysis showed that AGE-Ara h 1 had a greater resistance to peptic digestion than R-Ara h 1. The BALB/c mouse model showed that AGE-Ara h 1 had more allergenicity, indicating that the MR could enhance the allergenicity of Ara h 1. (c) 2020 Society of Chemical Industry
