A new protocol for ring-closing metathesis/isomerization sequence was developed. The reactions of selected dienes were performed in overheated 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at 120 degrees C and provided a wide range of cyclic vinyl ethers and amides with good yields and selectivities. During the past few decades, fabrication of functional rotaxane-branched dendrimers has become one of the most attractive yet challenging topics within supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present the successful fabrication of a family of new rotaxane-branched dendrimers containing up to 21 platinum atoms and 42 photosensitizer moieties through an efficient and controllable divergent approach. Notably, the photosensitization efficiencies of these rotaxane-branched dendrimers gradually increased with the increase of dendrimer generation. For example, third-generation rotaxane-branched dendrimer PG3 revealed 13.3-fold higher O-1(2) generation efficiency than its corresponding monomer AN. The enhanced O-1(2) generation efficiency was attributed to the enhancement of intersystem crossing (ISC) through the simple and efficient incorporation of multiple heavy atoms and photosensitizer moieties on the axles and wheels of the rotaxane units, respectively, which has been validated by UV-visible and fluorescence techniques, time-dependent density functional theory calculations, photolysis model reactions, and apparent activation energy calculations. Therefore, we develop a new promising platform of rotaxane-branched dendrimers for the preparation of effective photosensitizers.

The polysaccharide of yam was extracted by hot water method and purified by column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of Chinese yam polysaccharide were analyzed by UV, IR, GPC, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR spectra. The results showed that Chinese yam polysaccharide had alpha-D-Gluc-(1 -> 4) glycoside bond, and the C2 hydroxyl group was replaced by ethoxyl group. The average molecular weight was determined to be 7.28 x 104. It showed that The scavenging effect of yam polysaccharide on hydroxyl radicals was similar to VC. The sulfated polysaccharide (S-P), phosphorylated polysaccharide (P-P), carboxymethylated polysaccharide (C-P) and acetylated polysaccharide (A-P) were identified by IR and NMR. The results showed that P and its derivatives showed good antioxidant activity. Especially, their scavenging ability to hydroxyl radicals reached the level of VC. This laid a theoretical foundation for the development of yam polysaccharide-related foods.

12-Deoxyphorbol-13-phenylacetate (DPP), found in Euphorbia resinifera, is a prototype of a new class of phorbol derivatives that function as protein kinase C activators with potent anti-tumor-promoting activity. To better understand the biosynthesis of DPP in E. resinifera and develop methods for its production, we used next-generation sequencing technologies to build a transcriptome dataset. We obtained a total of approximately 27,102,078 clean reads that were assembled into 90,448 unigenes. Of those, 129 and 59 unigenes were identified in the Terpenoid Backbone Biosynthesis (TBB) (KEGG map00900) and the Diterpenoid Biosynthesis (DB) (KEGG map00904) pathways, respectively. We investigated the expression patterns of 23 DPP biosynthesis-related genes and validated the results by quantitative real time PCR. The results showed that CMK (4-diphosphocytidyl-2-C-methyl-o-erythritol kinase), MECS (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 2,4-cyclodiphosphate synthase), HDS (1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-(E)-butenyl 4-diphosphate synthase), and IPI (Isopentenyl-diphosphate Delta-isomerase) of the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway had a higher expression compared to other genes of TBB, whereas the expression levels of genes involved in the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway were relatively lower and not significantly different from each other. Furthermore, the expression of the 23 genes in root, stem and young stem differed, and the statistical results indicated that HMGS (Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase), MVK (mevalonic acid), MECT (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate cytidylyltransferase), MECS, HDS and IPI in the TBB pathway as well as KS in the DB pathway were significantly and positively correlated with the CS (casbene synthase) gene. These results suggested that both cytosol-localized MVA and plastid-localized MEP pathways may have a significant contribution in DPP accumulation, with MEP pathway playing a dominant role. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first transcriptome analysis of E. resinifera and the results reported here will aid the identification of functional genes and better understanding of DPP biosynthesis.

Two anthracene-based diamine crosslinkers were used to cure a range of commercially available monomers to produce four highly photoreversible crosslinked epoxy polymers. Through careful selection of the epoxy monomers used, the properties of the resultant polymer networks were varied to create a coating material that possessed room-temperature light-stimulated healing. Of the four coatings created, the best healing performance was exhibited by the two most flexible systems, both of these also exhibited the thermal and mechanical performance necessary for coatings. By using anthracene, the utilization of a wide range of wavelengths in the healing process is possible, which in applications such as industrial coatings would be of significant benefit.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are difficult substrates for hydrogenation because of the thermodynamic stability caused by aromaticity. We report here the first chromium- and cobalt-catalyzed, regiocontrolled hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ambient temperature. These reactions were promoted by low-cost chromium or cobalt salts combined with diimino/carbene ligand and methylmagnesium bromide and are characterized by high regioselectivity and expanded substrate scope that includes tetracene, tetraphene, pentacene, and perylene, which have rarely been reduced. The approach provides a cost-effective catalytic protocol for hydrogenation, is scalable, and can be utilized in the synthesis of tetrabromo- and carboxyl-substituted motifs through functionalization of the hydrogenation product. The systematic theoretical mechanistic modelings suggest that low-valent Cr and Co monohydride species, most likely from zerovalent transition metals, are capable of mediating these hydrogenations of fused PAHs.

In soluble methane monooxygenase enzymes (sMMO), dioxygen (O-2) is activated at a diiron(II) center to form an oxodiiron(IV) intermediate Q that performs the challenging oxidation of methane to methanol. An analogous mechanism of O-2 activation at mono- or dinuclear iron centers is rare in the synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a mononuclear non-heme iron(II)cyclam complex, 1-trans, that activates O-2 to form the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex, 2-trans, via a mechanism reminiscent of the O-2 activation process in sMMO. The conversion of 1-trans to 2-trans proceeds via the intermediate formation of an iron(III)-superoxide species 3, which could be trapped and spectroscopically characterized at -50 degrees C. Surprisingly, 3 is a stronger oxygen atom transfer (OAT) agent than 2-trans; 3 performs OAT to 1-trans or PPh 3 to yield 2-trans quantitatively. Furthermore, 2-trans oxidizes the aromatic C-H bonds of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, which, together with the strong OAT ability of 3, represents new domains of oxoiron(IV) and superoxoiron(III) reactivities.

Voltammetric sensor using a symmetrical derivative of anthrone3 (1,7-diamino-3,9-dibutyl benzo[1,2,3-de:4,5,6-d’e’]diquinoline-2,8(3H,9H)-dione) (SPE-A) has been developed as a probe for Hg(II) ions. Performance of the probe as screen-printed electrode modified with the receptor (SPE-A) has been compared with anthrone3 in solution phase, using 1:1 water-acetonitrile solvent system. Anthrone3 displayed an electrochemically quasi-reversible nature in voltammograms with both the systems and is presented as a novel disposable voltammetric sensor for mercury ions. Upon interaction with cations, both the electrode systems showed sensitivity towards Hg2+ ions with a lower detection limit of 0.61 mu M. The magnitude of the voltammetric current with the SPE-A exhibited three times the current obtained with a bare glassy carbon electrode (GC). Kinetic performance of the SPE-A electrode is better than the GC electrode. The morphological studies indicate reusability of the electrodes.

WRKY transcription factors participate in the salt stress responses of various plant species, but the underlying functional mechanisms are not well understood, particularly in grape. In this study, the role of VvWRKY13 in the salt stress response was characterized and the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms were explored. The results show that VvWRKY13 expression was induced by salt stress, and the VvWRKY13 transcript level in the salt stress-sensitive cultivar was significantly higher than that in the resistant cultivars. Overexpression of VvWRKY13 in Arabidopsis significantly inhibited the growth of transgenic plants under salt stress, indicating that VvWRKY13 has a negative effect on the salt stress response. The photosynthetic rate, contents of proline and soluble sugars, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as transcriptional levels of proline and soluble sugar metabolic genes, such as P5CS1, SS1, SS2 and G6PDH, as well as SOD and CAT encoding genes CAT1, CAT2, and Cu/Zn-SOD, all decreased under salt stress, whereas hydrogen peroxide and oxygen-free radical contents increased in transgenic Arabidopsis plants compared with those of wild-type plants. VvWRKY13 suppressed upregulation of SnRK2.3, ABF1, ABF2, ABF3, RD29B, RD29A, and RAB18 induced by salt stress, but showed no significant effect on the transcript levels of SnRK2.2, SnRK2.6, or RD22, indicating that VvWRKY13 affects salt stress tolerance via a specific abscisic acid signaling pathway. Key message VvWRKY13, isolated from grapevine, negatively regulate salt stress tolerance by depressing photosynthetic capacity, inhibiting salt-induced accumulation of osmolytes andup-regulation in antioxidant activity as well as expression of related genes. The ring-expanded strategy in nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) with the acceptor-donor-acceptor backbone has been reported to be an effective method to improve the fill factor (FF), open circuit voltage (VOC), and short circuit current (JSC) simultaneously in organic photovoltaics. However, design control is still missing in the ring-expanded strategy, and is urgently needed to further develop the origins and rules. Some main parameters involved in photoelectric conversion mechanism under the donor excitation (DE) and/or acceptor excitation (AE) are assessed by changing the position and size of ring-expanded modes. The results show that the external ring-expanded modes can not only maintain the original advantage as much as possible, variations in sizes and positions also offer them an opportunity to regulate the aforementioned parameters systematically, leading to better improvement regardless of AE or DE. Thus, the steady improvement in performance mentioned previously is the key to overcoming the negative correlation among FF, VOC, and JSC. This insight and discovery of the ring-expanded strategy provides new design approaches for the next generation of NFAs.
