Under the acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) reaction condition, the C3-vinyl groups of cinchona alkaloids readily react with each other to form a C-C bond. A novel type of cinchona alkaloid polymers was synthesized from dimeric cinchona squaramides using the Hoveyda-Grubbs’ second-generation catalysts (HG(2)) by means of ADMET reaction. The chiral polymers, containing cinchona squaramide moieties in their main chains, were subsequently employed as catalysts for the enantioselective Michael reaction to give the corresponding chiral adducts in high yields with excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. Both enantiomers from the asymmetric Michael reaction were distinctively prepared while using the polymeric catalysts, possessing pseudoenantiomeric structures. The catalysts were readily recovered from the reaction mixture and recycled several times due to the insolubility of the cinchona-based squaramide polymers.

In soluble methane monooxygenase enzymes (sMMO), dioxygen (O-2) is activated at a diiron(II) center to form an oxodiiron(IV) intermediate Q that performs the challenging oxidation of methane to methanol. An analogous mechanism of O-2 activation at mono- or dinuclear iron centers is rare in the synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a mononuclear non-heme iron(II)cyclam complex, 1-trans, that activates O-2 to form the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex, 2-trans, via a mechanism reminiscent of the O-2 activation process in sMMO. The conversion of 1-trans to 2-trans proceeds via the intermediate formation of an iron(III)-superoxide species 3, which could be trapped and spectroscopically characterized at -50 degrees C. Surprisingly, 3 is a stronger oxygen atom transfer (OAT) agent than 2-trans; 3 performs OAT to 1-trans or PPh 3 to yield 2-trans quantitatively. Furthermore, 2-trans oxidizes the aromatic C-H bonds of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, which, together with the strong OAT ability of 3, represents new domains of oxoiron(IV) and superoxoiron(III) reactivities.

An efficient intramolecular radical cyclization reaction via photoredox catalysis was developed for the synthesis of dibenzocycloketone derivatives using methylene blue as a photosensitizer. This strategy could be widely used to synthesize large heterocycles due to the unique reactivity of phosphoranyl radicals formed by a polar/SET crossover between an aromatic carboxylic acid and a phosphine radical cation. Attractive features of this process include generation of an acyl radical by an inexpensive and metal-free photocatalyst, which effectively undergoes a cyclization process.

MgO has been shown to catalyze an almost quantitative hydrogen transfer from 2-octanol as the hydrogen donor to benzophenone to form benzhydrol, a useful intermediate product in the pharmaceutical industry. The hydrogen transfer from a series of alcohols to the carbonyl group of benzophenone, its ten derivatives, four polycyclic ketones, and 2-naphthyl phenyl ketone was carried out in liquid (LP) or vapor phase (VP). The dependence of reactivity on the structure of the hydrogen donor, reaction temperature, donor-acceptor ratio, amount of catalyst, and the type and position of substituents has been established. For both reaction modes, optimal conditions for selective synthesis of the alcohols were determined and side reactions were investigated. The results indicate that the reactivity of the ketone is suppressed by the presence of a methyl substituent in the ortho position to a much greater extent in LP mode. A scale-up was demonstrated in the liquid phase mode.

A new protocol for ring-closing metathesis/isomerization sequence was developed. The reactions of selected dienes were performed in overheated 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at 120 degrees C and provided a wide range of cyclic vinyl ethers and amides with good yields and selectivities. Background: Aloe vera is commonly used in the primary health care of human beings since time immemorial. It is an herb widely used in various traditional systems of medicine worldwide. Systematic and scientific investigation on A. vera as a medicinal plant has drawn considerable attention, and many laboratories are involved in isolation, characterization and evaluation of phytoconstituents for their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the phytochemical, biological and medicinal attributes of A. vera against various diseases with special emphasis on underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: PubMed, EBOSCO host, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane library databases were utilized to search literature published between1977 and 2019 (fill March). Major keywords used in various combinations included: Aloe vera, phytochemistry, metabolism, pharmacological activity, prevention, treatment, health, disease, in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies. Results: Various biological and pharmacological activities of A. vera, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and skin-protective and wound-healing responses, have been attributed to the presence of many active compounds, including anthraquinones, anthrones, chromones, flavonoids, amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Conclusion: Based on various preclinical studies, A. vera constituents have enormous potential to prevent and treat various diseases. Randomized clinical trials are needed to understand the full therapeutic potential of this unique medicinal plant.

The tricyclic aromatic ketone 9-anthrone and its derivatives are under basic conditions in equilibrium with their corresponding anionic forms. Unlike the neutral species, the 9-anthrolate anions can be excited by blue LED light and thus, are able to initiate a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reaction. To demonstrate the synthetic applicability of the catalytic system, various (hetero)aryl chlorides were converted in C-C and C-Het bond-forming reactions affording the corresponding arylation products in moderate to excellent yields. The reactions proceed under very mild conditions without the need for a sacrificial electron donor. Besides 9-anthrone, other closely related derivatives were synthesised and investigated concerning their ability to catalyse demanding reductive transformations. Based on spectroscopic findings and radical trapping experiments a conceivable mechanism is proposed.
