Bacteria in general can develop a wide range of phenotypes under different conditions and external stresses. The phenotypes that reside in biofilms, overproduce exopolymers, and show increased motility often exhibit drug tolerance and drug persistence. In this work, we describe a class of small molecules that delay and inhibit the overproduction of alginate by a non-swarming mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among these molecules, selected benzophenone-derived alkyl disaccharides cause the mucoid bacteria to swarm on hydrated soft agar gel and revert the mucoid to a nonmucoid phenotype. The sessile (biofilm) and motile (swarming) phenotypes are controlled by opposing signaling pathways with high and low intracellular levels of bis-(3′,5′)-cyclic diguanosine monophosphate (cdG), respectively. As our molecules control several of these phenotypes, we explored a protein receptor, pilin of the pili appendages, that is consistent with controlling these bioactivities and signaling pathways. To test this binding hypothesis, we developed a bacterial motility-enabled binding assay that uses the interfacial properties of hydrated gels and bacterial motility to conduct label-free ligand-receptor binding studies. The structure-activity correlation and receptor identification reveal a plausible mechanism for reverting mucoid to nonmucoid phenotypes by binding pili appendages with ligands capable of sequestering and neutralizing reactive oxygen species.

Trace chemicals are common in marine and freshwater ecosystems globally. It is recognized that in the environment, individual chemicals are rarely found in isolation. Insufficient work has examined which chemicals co-occur and which methods best identify these mixtures. Using an existing data set, we found evidence that simple correlation analysis is better at identifying mixtures of commonly co-occurring trace chemicals than more commonly used PCA methods. Moreover, simple correlation analysis, unlike PCA, can be used in cases with unbalanced designs and with data points below reportable limits. Application of this approach allowed identification of 10 groups of chemicals commonly found together in freshwaters of the continental US, representing common chemical syndromes. Better identification of co-occurring chemical combinations could aid in our understanding of biological and ecological effects of aquatic contaminants. This research provides evidence of correlation analyses as a more effective method for identifying commonly co-occurring aquatic contaminants. We also examined the patterns of these mixtures with a dataset consisting of concentrations of 406 trace chemicals from 38 sample locations across the continental US. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Herein, we describe the direct synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-alpha]quinoxaline via oxidative coupling between methyl arene and 1-(2-aminophenyl) pyrroles. Oxidation of the benzylic carbon of the methyl arene was achieved by di-t-butyl peroxide in the presence of an iron catalyst, followed by conversion to an activated aldehyde in situ. Oxygen played a crucial role in the oxidation process to accelerate benzaldehyde formation. Subsequent Pictet-Spengler-type annulation completed the quinoxaline structure. The protocol tolerated various kinds of functional groups and provided 22 4-aryl pyrrolo[1,2-alpha]quinoxalines when various methyl arene derivatives were used. The developed method proceeded in air, and all catalysts, reagents, and solvents were easily accessible.

For the first time the occurrence of 25 organic micropollutants (OMPs) including; 11 personal care products (PCPs), six phthalate ester plasticizers (PEPs) and eight organophosphorus flame retardants (OPERs) was investigated in 72 water samples obtained from five bays in the Uganda sector of Lake Victoria. In addition, an assessment of the potential ecotoxic risk of the target OMPs to aquatic organisms was conducted. Water samples were analyzed for the target OMPs using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). All the target PCPs were found in all the water samples with the exception of musk ketone and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Triclosan (89-1400 ng L-1), benzophenone (36 -1300 ng L-1), and 4-methylbenzylidine camphor (21-1500 ng L-1) were the most predominant PCPs. All the six plasticizers were found in all the water samples with dibutyl phthalate (350-16 000 ng L-1), and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (210-23 000 ng L-1) detected at the highest concentrations. Five OPERs out of the eight targeted were found in all the water samples. Tricresyl phosphate (25-8100 ng L-1), tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (24-6500 ng L-1) and triphenyl phosphate (54-4300 ng L-1) were the most dominant OPERs. The highest concentrations of OMPs were recorded in Murchison and Thurston Bays, presumably due to industrial wastewater effluents from the highly industrialized localities of the two Bays. Ecotoxicological risk assessment showed that PCPs (triclosan, musk ketone, and 4-MBC), plasticizers (dibutyl phthalate, bis-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and OPERs (tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate and tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate) pose a high ecotoxic risk to lives of aquatic organisms (risk quotients, RQ > 1). A crosslinked polymer hybrid film, ipn-poly(vinyl cinnamate-graft-2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate)-v-poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by UV initiation using poly(vinyl cinnamate) (polyVCi), 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) crosslinker. Benzophenone (Ph2CO), was used as the photoinitiator. The synthesis was optimized by changing the concentration of HEMA, Ph2CO, EGDMA, and UV irradiation time. PolyVCi undergoes photocrosslinking by 2+2 photocylo addition while the monomer/crosslinker couple, HEMA/EGDMA, undergoes free radical polymerization and crosslinking to form EGDMA crosslinked polyHEMA. Hence, simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) formation occurs. The IPN consists of dual network of photocrosslinked polyVCi and EGDMA crosslinked polyHEMA chains. Grafting of HEMA/EGDMA chains on the polyVCi backbone also occur during network formation. The chemical functionalities present in the polyVCi/polyHEMA/polyEGDMA IPN films obtained were characterized by FTIR and SEM analysis. The contact angle measurements show enhanced wettability of the IPN film compared to polyVCi surface. TGA analysis confirms thermal stability of the films. Swelling behavior of the films examined in water and in ethanol reveals the effects of the chemical natures of polyVCi and polyHEMA as well as that of crosslinking on the hydrophilicity of the film. The films were tested as drug release matrices using flurbiprofen. The drug was loaded into the film matrix during IPN formation under UV irradiation. PolyVCi/polyHEMA/polyEGDMA IPN proved to be a suitable release matrix for flurbiprofen demonstrating controlled release behavior and zero-order release kinetics. The release mechanism was confirmed by its Ritger-Peppas n value (1.00 to 1.42), which indicates super case II release.

Heat processing of ready-to-drink beverages is required to ensure a microbiologically safe product, however, this can result in the loss of bioactive compounds responsible for functionality. The objective of this study was to establish the thermal stability of a novel dihydrochalcone, 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxyphloretin (2), 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosylphloretin (3) and other Cyclopia subternata phenolic compounds, in model solutions with or without citric acid and ascorbic acid. The solutions were heated at 93, 121 and 135 degrees C, relevant to pasteurisation, commercial sterilisation and ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurisation, respectively. For most compounds, the acids decreased the second order reaction rate constants, up to 27 times. Compound 2 (46.29 +/- 0.53 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)), and to a lesser extent compound 3 (5.94 +/- 0.01 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)) were the most thermounstable compounds when treated at 135 degrees C without added acids. Even though differential effects were observed for compounds at different temperatures and formulations, overall, the phenolic compounds were most stable under UHT pasteurisation conditions.

Since the discovery of aggregation induced emission (AIE) phenomenon, various stimuli-responsive materials have been rapidly developed. However, the development of self-assembled amphiphilic light-responsive materials in aqueous solution needs to be solved urgently. In this work, three new amphiphilic tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives (TPE-1, TPE-2 and TPE-3) with AIE properties and photochromism were synthesized and investigated. Owing to the different electron-donating abilities of the three groups attached to TPE units, the TPE-1, TPE-2 and TPE-3 displayed blue-green, yellow-green, and orange fluorescence emission in the aggregation state respectively. Furthermore, ordered nanoparticles formed via self-assembly in aqueous solution showed interesting photocyclization behaviors, which lead to fluorescence quenching under ultraviolet light irradiation (lambda = 365 nm). Therefore, the compounds can be used as anti-counterfeiting ink in the information encryption due to their amphiphilicity and photo-responsiveness. This work contributes new members to the amphiphilic light-responsive materials family and demonstrates the potential for applications in the fields of optical information storage, information security protection, and erase/rewrite systems.

It is well known that graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxides (RGO) are materials of today with immense application potentials. However, to realize the same large scale, reproducible, sustainable synthesis techniques such as greener methods which avoid utilization of toxic chemicals for synthesis, must be adopted. It is in this context, that here we report the reduction of GO to RGO by the extract of Thuja Orientalis (TO) seeds. As such, TO is a well-known bio-resource for medicinal and various other biotechnological applications as it contains Alpha Tocopherol, the major constituent of vitamin E. To the best of our knowledge, despite the wealth of literature, the current work makes a pioneering effort in applying TO seeds extract for reduction of GO to RGO. Thus, the reduction of GO, synthesized by the well-known modified Hummer?s method to RGO by TO extract, is confirmed from the results obtained by ultra-violet visible (UV?Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and especially, gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GCMS) techniques. Furthermore, the GCMS study is used to identify the compound Alpha Tocopherol responsible for reduction of GO to RGO. Based on current experimental evidences and literature views, the possible mechanism of reduction is suggested. Finally, the implications of present studies in the perspective of large scale, sustainable synthesis of RGO for various technological applications are discussed.

The migration of photoinitiators, phthalates and plasticizers from two paper and cardboard materials into food simulants (50% and 95% EtOH and Tenax) and foodstuffs (rice, cereals and milk powder) was studied. In the case of liquid simulants migration was observed to reach the equilibrium after 60 min and depended on the material type and the physicochemical parameters of the migrants, whereas the temperature (room temperature and 60 degrees C) did not show significant effects. The study of migration of the compounds from a baking paper to Tenax at high temperatures (150 and 250 degrees C) evidenced an increment of migration when increasing temperature, except for the most volatile analytes. Finally, the migration to foodstuffs was studied using fully validated analytical protocols.
