In this article, we describe the development of a new aerobic C-H oxidation methodology catalyzed by a precious metal-free LaMnO3 perovskite catalyst. Molecular oxygen is used as the sole oxidant in this approach, obviating the need for other expensive and/or environmentally hazardous stoichiometric oxidants. The electronic and structural properties of the LaMnO3 catalysts were systematically optimized, and a reductive pretreatment protocol was proved to be essential for acquiring the observed high catalytic activities. It is demonstrated that this newly developed method was extremely effective for the oxidation of alkylarenes to ketones as well as for the oxidative dimerization of 2-naphthol to 1,1-binaphthyl-2,2-diol (BINOL), a particularly important scaffold for asymmetric catalysis. Detailed spectroscopic and mechanistic studies provided valuable insights into the structural aspects of the active catalyst and the reaction mechanism.

The main focus of this work is to investigate the degradation behavior of two newly developed encapsulants for photovoltaic applications (thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and polyolefin elastomer (POE)), compared to the most widely used Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) upon exposure to two different artificial ageing tests (with and without ultraviolet (UV) irradiation). Additive composition, optical and thermal properties and chemical structure (investigated by means of Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry, UV-Visible-Near Infrared spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis and Fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy, respectively) of the analyzed polymers were monitored throughout the exposure to artificial ageing tests. Relevant signs of photo-oxidation were detectable for TPO after the UV test, as well as a depletion of material’s stabilizers. Signs of degradation for EVA and POE were detected when the UV dose applied was equal to 200 kW h m(-2). A novel approach is presented to derive information of oxidation induction time/dose from thermogravimetric measurements that correlate well with results obtained by using oxidation indices.

This study explores the synthesis of cyclic cis-vicinal phenyl ethylenes from oxotriphenylhexanoates. The reaction is a BBr3-promoted cyclization of 1,6-ketoesters (1) to five-membered diketo compounds (2). The synthesis is interesting as it constitutes one of the few examples of modular stereoselective synthesis of structures with a cis-oriented vicinal diphenylethylene. Bismuth(iii)-catalyzed regioselective functionalization at the C-6 position of tetrahydroquinolines and the C-5 position of indolines has been demonstrated. For the first time, one pot symmetrical and unsymmetrical arylation of isatins with tetrahydroquinolines was accomplished giving a completely new product skeleton in good to excellent yields. Most importantly, this protocol leads to the formation of a highly strained quaternary carbon stereogenic center, which is a challenging task. Benzhydryl and 1-phenylethyl trichloroacetimidates have been used as the alkylating partners to functionalize the C-6 and C-5 positions of tetrahydroquinolines and indolines, respectively. The rapid and effective removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) from water remains a huge challenge for traditional water treatment techniques. Compared with powder adsorbents such as polymers and nanomaterials, the free-standing adsorptive membrane is possible for large-scale applications and shows promise in removing OMPs. Herein, inspired by aquatic plants, a novel free-standing adsorptive membrane (NPPM) with high water flux, strong adsorption affinity, and excellent reproducibility was prepared by one-step UV surface grafting. N-Vinylformamide (NVF) was employed to introduce multiple hydrophilic and hydrogen bonding sites on the surface of commercial polypropylene fiber membranes (PPM). The NPPM exhibits excellent water permeability and ultrahigh water flux (up to 40 000 L/(m(2) h)) and could continuously remove a broad spectrum of OMPs from water. Its adsorption performance is 5-100 times higher than that of PPM and commercial membranes. Even in natural water sources such as tap water and river water, the NPPM shows unchanged adsorption performance and high OMPs removal efficiency (>95%). Notably, the NPPM has excellent regeneration performance and can be regenerated by hot water elution, which provides an environmentally friendly regeneration method without involving any organic solvent. Moreover, the synergy between hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction is revealed, and the hydrophobic interaction provided by the hydrophobic substrate is proved to play a fundamental role in OMPs adsorption. The strong hydrogen bonds between the grafts and the OMPs are demonstrated by variable-temperature FTIR spectroscopy (vt-FTIR), C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (C-13 NMR), and simulation calculations. The strong hydrogen bonds could increase the enthalpy change and enhance the adsorption affinity, so the NPPM has a strong adsorption affinity, which is 100 times that of similar adsorption membranes. This study not only presents an adsorptive membrane with great commercial potential in the rapid remediation of a water source but also opens a pathway to develop an adsorptive membrane with high water flux and strong adsorption affinity.

There is a large amount of literature relating to multivariate analytical methods using liquid chromatography together with multivariate chemometric/data mining methods in the food science field. Nevertheless, dating the obtained results cannot be compared as they are based on data acquired by a particular analytical instrument, thus they are instrument-dependant. Therefore, this creates difficulties in generating a database large enough to gather together all the variability of the samples. The solution to this problem is to obtain an instrument-agnostic chromatographic signal that is independent of the chromatographic state, i.e., measuring instrument or particular condition of the same instrument from which it was acquired. This paper describes the methodology to be followed to obtain standardized instrumental fingerprints when liquid chromatography is used for prior separation. For this purpose both internal and external chemical standards series are used as references. As an application example, we have applied this methodology for the determination of biophenols in olive oil by liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet-visible detector (LC-UV), using three different LC-UV instruments. Herein, we report the development of a tailor-made fluoride-based heterogeneous catalyst, POLITAG-F, for the waste-minimized continuous production of cyanohydrin silyl ethers. The careful designing of the polymeric support and the choice of fluoride ion as the anionic species resulted in the improvement of catalytic efficiency and allowed the effective conversion of different carbonyls (aldehydes, ketones, and unsaturated ketones). The POLITAG-F catalyst, employed under flow conditions, led to the conversion of large amounts (over 100 mmol) of the substrate with a productivity of 0.1 mmol min(-1). In addition, flow conditions allowed to minimize the waste production reaching an associated E-factor value of 0.04. An exhaustive evaluation of the environmental impact of our protocol has been reported by considering several green metrics (process mass intensity, atom economy, and reaction mass efficiency) and also the benign index and the safety hazard index of the process.
