The in-situ formed metallic Cu particles on the ZrO2 surface were prepared and applied to catalyze dehalogenation of a series of aryl bromides to produce corresponding products in 1-octanol with a yield of >99 %. The mechanistic investigation suggests that the Cu(0) nanoparticles served as hydrogen transfer active sites for degrading alcohols and adsorbing aryl bromides at the reaction system. The results showed that the catalyst was efficient with high reusability. The alcohol not only served as a reducing agent for CuO but also a safe green hydrogen donor. This methodology could be used as a powerful, low-cost, and safe technology for reducing halogenated aromatics.

Although synthetic antioxidants (AOs) and photoinitiators (PIs) are known to be used in printing inks, there are little data on residual concentrations in printing paper products. In the present study, twenty-five PIs, ten AOs, and six transformation products were analyzed in two types of printing paper products, magazines and paperboard food packaging materials, both of which are unavoidable everyday products in our life. Nine AOs and six transformation products can be detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (geometric mean, GM) of 1.16 x 10(4) ng/dm2. Twenty-two PIs were detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (GM) of 1.76 x 10(4) ng/dm2. These chemicals were also detected in magazines, albeit at low concentrations (GM of AOs: 466 ng/dm(2), GM of PIs: 1.17 x 10(3) ng/dm(2)). Magazine front covers were found to have much higher concentrations of the target compounds than magazine inside pages. Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168O), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), bisphenol A (BPA), and benzophenone (BP) were among the predominant chemicals in those printing paper products. Preliminary calculations suggest that dermal exposure to AOs (GM: 6.25 ng/day) and PIs (GM: 17.0 ng/day) via contact with printing paper products is a minor exposure pathway compared to food intake/dust ingestion and is exceedingly unlikely to cause adverse health effects.

A nickel-catalyzed reductive decyanation of aromatic nitriles has been developed, in which the readily available and abundant ethanol was applied as the hydride donor. Various functional groups on the aromatic rings, such as alkoxyl, amino, imino and amide, were compatible in this catalytic protocol. Heteroaryl, benzylic and alkenyl nitriles were also tolerated. Mechanistic investigation indicated that ethanol provided hydride efficiently via beta-hydride elimination in this reductive decyanation.

Alkylidene carbenes undergo rapid inter- and intramolecular reactions and rearrangements, including 1,2-migrations of beta-substituents to generate alkynes. Their propensity for substituent migration exerts profound influence over the broader utility of allcylidene carbene intermediates, yet prior efforts to categorize 1,2-migratory aptitude in these elusive species have been hampered by disparate modes of carbene generation, ultrashort carbene lifetimes, mechanistic ambiguities, and the need to individually prepare a series of C-13-labeled precursors. Herein we report on the rearrangement of C-13-alkylidene carbenes generated in situ by the homologation of carbonyl compounds with [C-13]-Li-TMS-diazomethane, an approach that obviates the need for isotopically labeled substrates and has expedited a systematic investigation (C-13{H-1} NMR, DLPNO-CCSD(T)) of migratory aptitudes in an unprecedented range of more than 30 alkylidene carbenes. Hammett analyses of the reactions of 26 differentially substituted benzophenones reveal several counterintuitive features of 1,2-migration in alkylidene carbenes that may prove of utility in the study and synthetic application of unsaturated carbenes more generally.

Herein, the facile photografting coating method was used to develop a novel metal biochelator film by covalent immobilization of citric acid (CA) onto polypropylene (PP) surface. First, PP film underwent a surface modification by UV-grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of benzophenone (BP). The concentrations of GMA (bifunctional monomer) and BP (photoinitiator) were appropriately optimized to achieve the breath-figure-array structure and brush-like grafting configuration with a high availability of the reactive oxirane ring. Subsequently, CA was immobilized onto the PP-g-GMA surface via the ring-opening reaction to obtain the biochelator film (PP-g-GMA-g-CA). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and solid state C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy elucidated the chemical structure and grafting mechanism of grafted samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to detect the chemical composition of the surface of the grafted samples, by which the grafting density was relatively estimated. In addition, the uniformity of the grafting pattern and morphology of the grafting unit were observed using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Furthermore, the carboxylic acid density of the biochelator film (PP-g-GMA-g-CA) was quantified using a toluidine blue O assay, in which approximately 327 +/- 58 nM carboxylic acid was detected per each film. The metal chelating activity of the film was also investigated using the colorimetric ferrozine assay, by which PP-g-GMA-g-CA film chelated approximately 215 +/- 11 nM of Fe3+. Therefore, this newly developed system can be used as a versatile metal biochelator in a wide range of biomedical, cosmetic, and packaging applications.

Here we describe the discovery of a new class of C-H borylation catalysts and their use for regioselective C-H borylation of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic systems. The new catalysts have Ir-C(thienyl) or Ir-C(furyl) anionic ligands instead of the diamine-type neutral chelating ligands used in the standard C-H borylation conditions. It is reported that the employment of these newly discovered catalysts show excellent reactivity and ortho-selectivity for diverse classes of aromatic substrates with high isolated yields. Moreover, the catalysts proved to be efficient for a wide number of aliphatic substrates for selective C(sp(3))-H bond borylations. Heterocyclic molecules are selectively borylated using the inherently elevated reactivity of the C-H bonds. A number of late-stage C-H functionalization have been described using the same catalysts. Furthermore, we show that one of the catalysts could be used even in open air for the C(sp(2))-H and C(sp(3))-H borylations enabling the method more general. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the active catalytic intermediate is the Ir(bis)boryl complex, and the attached ligand acts as bidentate ligand. Collectively, this study underlines the discovery of new class of C-H borylation catalysts that should find wide application in the context of C-H functionalization chemistry.

In vivo animal bioassays are increasingly being supplemented with in vitro assays to serve as the new standard for chemical toxicity tests. Despite this shift, investigators face challenges related to increased reliance on in vitro data. The aim of this study was to deploy a streamlined method to assess the ability of in vitro data to predict similar results as in vivo data by correlating chemical toxicity rankings obtained using Benchmark Doses and Benchmark Dose Lower Limits (BMD(L)s) derived from in vivo and in vitro assays. In vitro and in vivo assay characteristics were assessed for their impact on the predictive ability of in vitro data. Minimum best-fit BMD(L)s were calculated for chemicals using Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Benchmark Dose Software (BMDS). Forty-one chemicals met the inclusion criteria of this study. Relative chemical toxicity rankings were assessed through Kappa statistics, Pearson correlations, and/or Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions. Results illustrated likely ability of in vitro data to predict similar results as short-term in vivo data. Further, rankings derived from in vitro cytotoxicity assays, unlike stress response assays, significantly correlated with rankings derived from short-term in vivo assays. These results support the use of in vitro data as a prioritization tool within toxicity testing.

Sea grape (Caulerpa racemosa) is an edible green alga which contains a high amount of protein with a seafood flavor, which can be released via protein hydrolysis. Our present work was designed to determine the optimal concentration of palm sugar and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in sea grape protein hydrolysate sauce. The process optimization was performed to evaluate multiple parameters such as viscosity, color properties, and hedonic score. Five different levels of palm sugar and CMC were designed using a central composite design to yield sauce with a maximum hedonic score. We developed different mathematical models in this work, where viscosity, color properties (L*, a*, b*), and hedonic score were modeled using 2FI (two-factor interaction), quadratic, and linear models, respectively. The numerical optimization revealed that the predicted optimal solution was palm sugar and CMC concentration with generated viscosity, L*, a*, b*, and hedonic score of 0.893 poise, 23.296, 7.300, 19.565, and 3.522, respectively, and a desirability value of 0.839. GC-MS data associated with referred information represented that sea grape sauce had four compounds with a typical seafood flavor, namely, nonanal, hexanal, (E)-2-octenal, and octanoic acid; some native palm sugar flavors; and Maillard reaction products (MRP). Our study suggests that sauce is a potential value-added product from sea grape protein hydrolysate.

In view of the disadvantages of concentration polarization and trade-off effects in the application of membrane in desalination field, oxide-nano graphene oxide/polyamide (O-NGO/PA) loose intermediate layer and PA ultra-thin dense layer were introduced to fabricate PA/O-NGO/polyphenylene sulfide composite membrane with sandwich structure via multi-step interfacial polymerization (MS-IP) method. The selective permeation mechanism of ultrathin layer produced by different aqueous monomers (PIP and MPD) was studied, the effect of its physicochemical structure on the relief of concentration polarization phenomenon and the breakthrough of trade-off effect was analyzed. The ultra-thin and dense PA layer mainly played the role of interception and shortened the water molecular penetration path. In the retention test of metal salt solution, compared with the rough surface, it was found that the smooth surface was more conducive to the diffusion of intercepted metal ions into the feed solution, thus alleviating the concentration polarization phenomenon.
