We quantitatively synthesized N-unsubstituted (N-H) diphenylketimine from benzophenone and ammonia without solvent under ambient conditions on some solid acids, especially the proton-exchanged Y-type zeolite (H-Y), by a simple procedure. Similarly, other N-unsubstituted ketimines were also obtained in high yields by the reaction of alkyl aryl ketones or a dialkyl ketone having alpha-acidic hydrogens with a large excess of ammonia gas at 1 atm. without a solvent with the aid of the zeolite’s high dehydration ability and stabilization effects. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have shown promises in numerous applications such as bio-inspired robotics, tactile displays, tunable optics, and microfluidics, owing to their unique combination of large actuation strain, high energy density, and light weight. However, the practical applications of the DEAs have been hindered partly due to their poor reliability and durability under high-strain actuation. A major failure mechanism is from the localized electrical breakdown. Compliant electrodes with self-clearing capability have been studied to prevent premature failures. Here, an interpenetrating bilayer compliant electrode comprising a thin layer of a water-based polyurethane (WPU) overcoated on an ultrathin single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) layer is reported. The thin polyurethane layer serves as the dielectric barrier to suppress corona discharges of the nanotubes in air. The SWNT+WPU bilayer electrode has the capability to self-clear at the breakdown sites, enhancing the fault tolerance and mendability of the DEA at a large-strain actuation. Stable actuation at 150% area strain for 1000 cycles under square-wave voltage and 5.5-h continuous actuation at a constant voltage have been achieved for acrylic elastomer-based DEAs.

In the effort to create a sustainable future economy, the ability to directly convert dilute gas-phase CO2 in waste gas streams into useful products would be a valuable tool, which may be achievable using Grignard reagents as both the capture and the conversion materials. The magnesium salt by-product can be recovered, and metallic magnesium regenerated through conventional high-efficiency electrolysis. This stoichiometric approach is known as metal looping, where the magnesium acts as the energy vector for the capture and conversion, allowing both to occur at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. However, the process has only previously been demonstrated with 12% CO2 in nitrogen mixtures. If we consider this process in a real post-combustion flue gas conversion scenario, the sensitivity of Grignard reagents to other gases (and water vapour) must be considered. While some of these gases and the water vapour are relatively easily removed, in most flue gas streams the most common other gas present, oxygen, would be far more challenging to excise, and oxygen is known to react with Grignard reagents, albeit slowly. In order to determine if higher oxygen concentrations could be tolerated, allowing the possibility of a variety of relatively inexpensive and possibly profitable direct CO2 conversion pathways to be developed, a range of industrially relevant CO2/O-2 mixtures were made and carefully bubbled through phenylmagnesium bromide solutions.

Although synthetic antioxidants (AOs) and photoinitiators (PIs) are known to be used in printing inks, there are little data on residual concentrations in printing paper products. In the present study, twenty-five PIs, ten AOs, and six transformation products were analyzed in two types of printing paper products, magazines and paperboard food packaging materials, both of which are unavoidable everyday products in our life. Nine AOs and six transformation products can be detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (geometric mean, GM) of 1.16 x 10(4) ng/dm2. Twenty-two PIs were detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (GM) of 1.76 x 10(4) ng/dm2. These chemicals were also detected in magazines, albeit at low concentrations (GM of AOs: 466 ng/dm(2), GM of PIs: 1.17 x 10(3) ng/dm(2)). Magazine front covers were found to have much higher concentrations of the target compounds than magazine inside pages. Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168O), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), bisphenol A (BPA), and benzophenone (BP) were among the predominant chemicals in those printing paper products. Preliminary calculations suggest that dermal exposure to AOs (GM: 6.25 ng/day) and PIs (GM: 17.0 ng/day) via contact with printing paper products is a minor exposure pathway compared to food intake/dust ingestion and is exceedingly unlikely to cause adverse health effects.

Alkoxycarbonylations are important and versatile reactions that result in the formation of a new C-C bond. Herein, we report on a new and halide-free alkoxycarbonylation reaction that does not require the application of an external carbon monoxide atmosphere. Instead, manganese carbonyl complexes and organo(alkoxy)borate salts react to form an ester product containing the target C-C bond. The required organo(alkoxy)borate salts are conveniently generated from the stoichiometric reaction of an organoborane and an alkoxide salt and can be telescoped without purification. The protocol leads to the formation of both aromatic and aliphatic esters and gives complete control over the ester’s substitution (e.g., OMe, (OBu)-Bu-t, OPh). A reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of stoichiometric reactivity studies, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The new chemistry is particularly relevant for the field of Mn(I) catalysis and clearly points to a potential pathway toward irreversible catalyst deactivation.

Eight contaminants were used to perform a surrogate contamination test to evaluate safety of the process for producing recycled pulp for adult paper diapers. We performed a safety evaluation of the recycling process for producing recycled pulp following the European Food Safety Authority safety assessment for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles using recycled PET. We also compared the first tier safety limit established on the basis of TTC (C-limit) in the pulp that contained recycled pulp with residual contaminant concentrations (C-res). If C-limit > C-res, there is no concern regarding safety of the recycling process. C-limit was determined to be 0.46 mg/kg-pulp based on the human exposure threshold of 0.15 mu g/person/day using the scenario in which a bedridden senior citizen uses four adult paper diapers manufactured with pulp containing 10% recycled pulp per day. C-res was derived from the initial concentration in used pulp (0.17 mg/kg-pulp), and decontamination rate was obtained from the surrogate contamination test. The C res of the eight contaminants were between 0.0017 and 0.10 mg/kg-pulp, which were all below the C-limit of 0.46 mg/kg-pulp. These results indicated there was no safety problem regarding this process for producing recycled pulp for adult paper diapers.

Chitosan (Cs) was cross-linked with four various quantities of 4,4′-(5,5′-carbonylbis(1,3-dioxoisoindoline-5,2-diyl) )dibenzoyl isothiocyanate. Elemental analysis, FTIR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy assured that the amino groups of chitosan reacted with the isothiocyanate groups of the cross-linker producing four new hydrogels namely as BBTU-Cs-1, BBTU-Cs-2, BBTU-Cs-3, and BBTU-Cs-4 according to the increment of their cross-linking content, respectively. SEM showed their porous structures and XRD indicated their amorphous nature. Their swell ability increased with decreasing the medium pH value and with increasing cross-linking density. In comparison with the popular COX inhibitor Celecoxib, these hydrogels showed an inhibition activity towards COX enzymes with selective inhibition towards COX-2. Their inhibition activity could be arranged as follows: Celecoxib > BBTU-Cs-4 > BBTU-Cs-3 > BBTU-Cs-2 > BBTU-Cs-1. BBTU-CS-4 hydrogel exhibited a potent inhibition against COX-2 (IC50 0.42 mu g/ml) compared with that observed for the standard Celecoxib (IC50 026 mu g/ml). BBTIJ-Cs-4 is more potent against H. pylori compared to the other hydrogels. BBTU-Cs-4 at a concentration of 7.81 mu g/ml is able to kill 100% of the H. pylori and exhibits a preferential ability to inhibit 8935% of COX-2 than COX-1 (0%). Benzophenone is a mutagen, carcinogen, and endocrine disruptor. Its presence in food products or food packaging is banned in the United States. Under California Proposition 65, there is no safe harbor for benzophenone in any personal care products, including sunscreens, anti-aging creams, and moisturizers. The purpose of this study was to determine (1) if benzophenone was present in a wide variety of commercial sun protection factor (SPF)/sunscreen products, (2) whether benzophenone concentration in the product increased over time, and (3) if the degradation of octocrylene was the likely source for benzophenone contamination. Benzophenone concentration was assayed in nine commercial sunscreen products from the European Union and eight from the United States (in triplicate), including two single ingredient sources of octocrylene. These same SPF items were subjected to the United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA)-accelerated stability aging protocol for 6 weeks. Benzophenone was measured in the accelerated-aged products. Sixteen octocrylene-containing product lines that were recently purchased had an average concentration of 39 mg/kg benzophenone, ranging from 6 mg/kg to 186 mg/kg. Benzophenone was not detectable in the product that did not contain octocrylene. After subjecting the 17 products to the U.S. FDA-accelerated stability method, the 16 octocrylene-containing products had an average concentration of 75 mg/kg, ranging from 9.8 mg/kg to 435 mg/kg. Benzophenone was not detectable in the product that did not contain octocrylene. Benzophenone was detected in the pure octocrylene manufactured ingredient. Octocrylene generates benzophenone through a retro-aldol condensation. In vivo, up to 70% of the benzophenone in these sunscreen products may be absorbed through the skin. U.S. FDA has established a zero tolerance for benzophenone as a food additive. In the United States, there were 2999 SPF products containing octocrylene in 2019. The safety of octocrylene as a benzophenone generator in SPF or any consumer products should be expeditiously reviewed by regulatory agencies.

It is found that free radicals of (OH)-O-center dot would be generated in KOH solutions at elevated temperatures according to the results of fluorescence analysis. Five kinds of radical inhibitors (tert-butylphenol-containing reagents, 4-amino-tempo, benzophenone, phenothiazine and N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine) were employed as the dopant, separately, to prepare anion exchange membranes (AEMs) based on poly(4-vinylbenzylchloride-styrene). The investigaions on the properties of the prepared AEMs indicate that more radicals might be produced during the degradation of the AEMs via chain propagation reactions. Moreover, the influences of the radical inhibitors on the degradation of the AEMs in 8 M KOH solutions at 80 degrees C are quite different although all these inhibitors could react with (OH)-O-center dot radicals. Therein the radical inhibitors o-, m-, p-tert-butylphenols could effectively enhance the chemical stability of the AEMs. However, when the phenol-containing inhibitors have a large substituent group in its benzene ring, the membranes tend to be brittle during the stability test.

Mango seed kernel is a by-product which is usually discarded. However, it has been confirmed in this study that seed kernel exhibits more phenolic compounds with bioactive properties than edible fraction of mango. The influence of factors such as cultivar and maturation degree on the phenolic composition has been studied to evaluate nutraceutical value. The comprehensive analysis of phenolic composition by HPLC-DAD-Q-ToF-MS seed kernel from different cultivars (‘Keth’, ‘Kent’and ‘Osteen’) at five maturation stages was conducted. Results evidenced that `Keitt’ samples exhibited higher quantities of iriflophenone glucoside, maclurin C-glucoside, maclurin digalloyl glucoside, mangiferin, 5-galloyl quinic acid and trigalloyl glucose at the first three ripening stages. However, seed kernel from `Osteen’ variety showed higher amounts of hexa- and hepta-gallotannins whose concentrations diminished over the maturation course. Therefore, cultivar and maturation stage factors should be take into account due to their influence on the phenolic composition and subsequently on the nutraceutical value.
