A series of artificial triarylmethanols has been synthesized and studied toward the possibility of exhibiting an induced optical activity. The observed chiroptical response of these compounds resulted from the chiral conformation of a triarylmethyl core. The chirality induction from a permanent chirality element to the liable triarylmethyl core proceeds as a cooperative and cascade process. The OH center dot center dot center dot O(R) and/or (H)O center dot center dot center dot HorthoC hydrogen bond formation along with the C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions seem to be the most important factors that control efficiency of the chirality induction. The position of chiral and methoxy electron-donating groups within a trityl skeleton affects the amplitude of observed Cotton effects and stability of the trityl carbocations. In the neutral environment, the most intense Cotton effects are observed for ortho-substituted derivatives, which undergo a rapid decomposition associated with the complete decay of ECD signals upon acidification. From all of the in situ generated stable carbocations, only two exhibit intense Cotton effects in the low energy region at around 450 nm. The formation of carbocations is reversible; after alkalization, the ions return to the original neutral forms. Unlike most triarylmethyl derivatives known so far, in the crystal, the triarylmethanol, para-substituted with the chiral moiety, shows a propensity for a solid-state sorting phenomenon.

Nanostructured and reusable 3d-metal catalysts that operate with high activity and selectivity in important chemical reactions are highly desirable. Here, a cobalt catalyst was developed for the synthesis of primary amines via reductive amination employing hydrogen as the reducing agent and easy-to-handle ammonia, dissolved in water, as the nitrogen source. The catalyst operates under very mild conditions (1.5 mol% catalyst loading, 50 degrees C and 10 bar H-2 pressure) and outperforms commercially available noble metal catalysts (Pd, Pt, Ru, Rh, Ir). A broad scope and a very good functional group tolerance were observed. The key for the high activity seemed to be the used support: an N-doped amorphous carbon material with small and turbostratically disordered graphitic domains, which is microporous with a bimodal size distribution and with basic NH functionalities in the pores.

With the growing concern about safety and environmental issues, amino acid-based surfactants have great potential as sustainable and eco-friendly substances. In the present study, six N-acyl oligopeptide surfactants were synthesized using fatty acid methyl esters (i.e., methyl caprate, methyl laurate, and methyl myristate) and glycyl oligopeptides (i.e., glycylglycine and glycylglycylglycine). Surface active properties and aggregation behaviors of these surfactants were investigated using surface tension, fluorescence probe, dynamic light scattering, and microscopy measurements. The adsorption at the air-water interface and aggregation in the aqueous solution depend on the structure of both hydrophilic head-groups and hydrophobic tails. Spherical vesicles were observed in the aqueous solutions of glycylglycine derivatives, whereas short tubular aggregates were found in that of corresponding glycylglycylglycine products. Intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between the amide head-groups might be responsible for the different self-assembly behavior and microstructure of N-acyl oligopeptide surfactants in the aqueous solution.

Stoichiometric cyclomanganation of aromatic ketones and further reactions of the thus-formed manganacycles with isocyanates were first reported by Kaesz and Liebeskind in 1975 and 1990, respectively. The buildup of a closed manganese catalytic cycle for the reaction of ketones and isocyanates remains an unsolved problem. Rubrene is the most widely used triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) emitter for NIR-to-vis photon upconversion (UC), however, strong singlet fission (SF) in the solid films quenches its emission and hampers practical TTA-UC applications. Herein, the issue was addressed by decorating the rubrene with sterically demanding 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl side-moieties at the periphery and the core to result in 40-fold enhancement of the emission quantum yield. Nevertheless, the sterically crowded rubrenes were found to exhibit lower sensitized UC performance compared to the conventional rubrene, which was ascribed to inefficient triplet energy transfer from a sensitizer and poor TTA (for the core-modified rubrene only). By exploiting the distinct feature of rubrenes to simultaneously express both SF and TTA in the solid films, their TTA efficiency was assessed independently from TET in the sensitizer-free films. The results implied a trade-off between suppressed SF and enhanced TTA in the rubrene emitters, which could be addressed via careful selection of the degree of sterical hindrance and linking position of the side-moieties. Thorough analysis of the prompt and delayed fluorescence revealed that the bulky side-moieties at the periphery do not impede TTA, i.e., it is as efficient as that of unsubstituted rubrene, whereas these moieties linked directly to the core suppress TTA dramatically. The current study unveils an advantage of the peripheral linking vs. core linking pattern of rubrene emitters, thereby providing valuable insights for their rational modification towards improved NIR-to-vis UC efficiency in the solid state.

For the first time the occurrence of 25 organic micropollutants (OMPs) including; 11 personal care products (PCPs), six phthalate ester plasticizers (PEPs) and eight organophosphorus flame retardants (OPERs) was investigated in 72 water samples obtained from five bays in the Uganda sector of Lake Victoria. In addition, an assessment of the potential ecotoxic risk of the target OMPs to aquatic organisms was conducted. Water samples were analyzed for the target OMPs using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). All the target PCPs were found in all the water samples with the exception of musk ketone and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Triclosan (89-1400 ng L-1), benzophenone (36 -1300 ng L-1), and 4-methylbenzylidine camphor (21-1500 ng L-1) were the most predominant PCPs. All the six plasticizers were found in all the water samples with dibutyl phthalate (350-16 000 ng L-1), and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (210-23 000 ng L-1) detected at the highest concentrations. Five OPERs out of the eight targeted were found in all the water samples. Tricresyl phosphate (25-8100 ng L-1), tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (24-6500 ng L-1) and triphenyl phosphate (54-4300 ng L-1) were the most dominant OPERs. The highest concentrations of OMPs were recorded in Murchison and Thurston Bays, presumably due to industrial wastewater effluents from the highly industrialized localities of the two Bays. Ecotoxicological risk assessment showed that PCPs (triclosan, musk ketone, and 4-MBC), plasticizers (dibutyl phthalate, bis-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and OPERs (tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate and tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate) pose a high ecotoxic risk to lives of aquatic organisms (risk quotients, RQ > 1). We present an efficient and versatile visible light-driven methodology to transform aryl aldehydes and ketones chemoselectively either to alcohols or to pinacol products with CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots as photocatalysts. Thiophenols were used as proton and hydrogen atom donors and as hole traps for the excited quantum dots (QDs) in these reactions. The two products can be switched from one to the other simply by changing the amount of thiophenol in the reaction system. The core/shell QD catalysts are highly efficient with a turn over number (TON) larger than 4 X 10(4) and 4 X 10(5) for the reduction to alcohol and pinacol formation, respectively, and are very stable so that they can be recycled for at least 10 times in the reactions without significant loss of catalytic activity. The additional advantages of this method include good functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions, the allowance of selectively reducing aldehydes in the presence of ketones, and easiness for large scale reactions. Reaction mechanisms were studied by quenching experiments and a radical capture experiment, and the reasons for the switchover of the reaction pathways upon the change of reaction conditions are provided.

In this study, we successfully synthesized two types of meso/microporous carbon materials through the carbonization and potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation for two different kinds of hyper-crosslinked polymers of TPE-CPOP1 and TPE-CPOP2, which were synthesized by using Friedel-Crafts reaction of tetraphenylethene (TPE) monomer with or without cyanuric chloride in the presence of AlCl3 as a catalyst. The resultant porous carbon materials exhibited the high specific area (up to 1100 m(2) g(-1)), total pore volume, good thermal stability, and amorphous character based on thermogravimetric (TGA), N-2 adsoprtion/desorption, and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analyses. The as-prepared TPE-CPOP1 after thermal treatment at 800 degrees C (TPE-CPOP1-800) displayed excellent CO2 uptake performance (1.74 mmol g(-1) at 298 K and 3.19 mmol g(-1) at 273 K). Furthermore, this material possesses a high specific capacitance of 453 F g(-1) at 5 mV s(-1) comparable to others porous carbon materials with excellent columbic efficiencies for 10,000 cycle at 20 A g(-1).

The synthesis of benzoborole dianions by alkali metal reduction of BN-naphthalene derivatives via a ring-contraction strategy has been developed. Reduction of 1-alkynyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 a in Et2O led to the elimination of alkynyllithium with the formation of 1-amino-1-benzoborole trilithium salt 2 a, whereas reduction of 1-phenyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 c in THF yielded 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with the elimination of ArNHLi. The trilithium and dilithium salts 2 a and 2 c have been fully characterized. Treatment of trilithium salt 2 a with Et3NHCl led to the selective protonation of the amino lithium to afford the dilithium salt 2 aH, which could be cleanly oxidized to 1-amino-1-benzoborole 3 in an excellent yield. Reaction of 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with MeI yielded the lithium borate 4 c, which is luminescent both in solution and in the solid state.

This work presents the facile synthesis of heteroatom-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (C-dots), which could serve as an antioxidant. Herein, nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur codoped carbon dots (NPSC-dots) have been synthesized by a single-step hydrothermal strategy. Owing to the radical scavenging activity of the NPSC-dots, they were tested against several methods as well as in practical applications. The antioxidant ability of the NPSC-dots was efficiently utilized on plastic films by coating with these NPSC-dots. For the very first time, NPSC-dots were immobilized onto nonpolar plastic films (polypropylene) via photochemical covalent grafting to extend the shelf life of food items or storage without affecting the quality of plastic films. The NPSC-dot-coated PP film with negligible deterioration of transparency was extensively studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurement, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The fluorescent character, antioxidant ability, and durability under different solvent systems of the coated film were examined. Also, the coated films were extensively and rigorously evaluated against simulated drastic environmental conditions to ensure the durability and antifogging application.
