The synthesis of benzoborole dianions by alkali metal reduction of BN-naphthalene derivatives via a ring-contraction strategy has been developed. Reduction of 1-alkynyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 a in Et2O led to the elimination of alkynyllithium with the formation of 1-amino-1-benzoborole trilithium salt 2 a, whereas reduction of 1-phenyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 c in THF yielded 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with the elimination of ArNHLi. The trilithium and dilithium salts 2 a and 2 c have been fully characterized. Treatment of trilithium salt 2 a with Et3NHCl led to the selective protonation of the amino lithium to afford the dilithium salt 2 aH, which could be cleanly oxidized to 1-amino-1-benzoborole 3 in an excellent yield. Reaction of 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with MeI yielded the lithium borate 4 c, which is luminescent both in solution and in the solid state.

A practical and heterogeneously catalyzed Stille, homo-coupling, and Suzuki carbonylation reaction has been reported using Pd nanoparticles supported on amino-vinyl silica-functionalized magnetic carbon nanotube (CNT@Fe3O4@SiO2-Pd) for the efficient synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl ketones from aryl iodides. A wide variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl ketones were obtained in high yields under CO gas-free conditions using Mo(CO)(6) as an efficient carbonyl source. Considering the atom economy of Ph3SnCl, less than an equimolar amount can be applied in Stille transformation, which is of great importance due to the toxicity of organotin derivatives. Moreover, no phosphine ligand and external reducing agent were necessary in these coupling carbonylation reactions. This heterogeneous Pd catalyst offers high activity with very low palladium leaching. Finally, the catalyst can be reused and recycled for six steps without loss in activity, exhibiting good example of sustainable methodology. Graphic abstract

The synthesis of natural products by E. coli is a challenging alternative method of environmentally friendly minimization of hazardous waste. Here, we establish a recombinant E. coli capable of transforming sodium benzoate into 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzophenone (2,4,6-TriHB), the intermediate of benzophenones and xanthones derivatives, based on the coexpression of benzoate-CoA ligase from Rhodopseudomonas palustris (BadA) and benzophenone synthase from Garcinia mangostana (GmBPS). It was found that the engineered E. coli accepted benzoate as the leading substrate for the formation of benzoyl CoA by the function of BadA and subsequently condensed, with the endogenous malonyl CoA by the catalytic function of BPS, into 2,4,6-TriHB. This metabolite was excreted into the culture medium and was detected by the high-resolution LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS. The structure was elucidated by in silico tools: Sirius 4.5 combined with CSI FingerID web service. The results suggested the potential of the new artificial pathway in E. coli to successfully catalyze the transformation of sodium benzoate into 2,4,6-TriHB. This system will lead to further syntheses of other benzophenone derivatives via the addition of various genes to catalyze for functional groups.

Complexation of L [L = 5-phenyl-2,8-di-2-pyridinyl-anthyridine] with [Pd(CH3CN)(4)](BF4)(2) and [Pd(CH3CN)(3)Cl](BF4) in a molar ratio of 1:2 rendered the corresponding dinuclear complexes [Pd2L (CH3CN)(4)](BF4)(4) (1) and [Pd2L (CH3CN)(2)Cl-2](BF4)(2) (2), respectively. However, treatment of L with (COD)PdCl2 followed by anion exchange yielded a tetranuclear complex [Pd4L3Cl4](PF6)(4)(4a). Structures of these complexes are characterized by both spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Interconversion of these three complexes was studied via the manipulation of stoichiometric ratio of ligand to metal precursor. The catalytic activity of these complexes for carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling was investigated. Complex 2 shows an excellent catalytic activity on the reaction of aryl iodide with arylboronic acid in the presence of atmospheric pressure of CO to give the corresponding benzophenones.

A relatively large number of organic and inorganic chemistry reagents are air- or moisture-sensitive, and undergraduate students should be trained in their use. When handling such reagents, it is important to select the correct syringe and to use that syringe correctly. We have found that the best syringe for use in an undergraduate setting is a fully plastic polypropylene (PP) Luer lock syringe. While generally safe, such a syringe should be treated as a single-use syringe. Repeated exposure to an organic solvent causes progressively more resistance to the movement of the plunger, or its complete freeze. A visible-light-induced oxidative coupling of diselenides with readily available vinylarenes is demonstrated. This benign protocol allows one to access a wide range of alpha-aryl and alpha-alkyl selenomethyl ketones in good yields with excellent functional group compatibility. The distinct advantages of this protocol over all previous methods include the use of a green solvent and air as an oxidant and the lack of a photocatalyst, a base, and an oxidant as well as better green chemistry matrices. Furthermore, the title reaction can be performed with natural sunlight, the most sustainable energy source imaginable. Additionally, the mild reaction conditions, easy operation and suitability for the modification of styrene-functionalized biomolecules make the current reaction system a more attractive method for the synthesis of a variety of medicinal and agrochemical compounds of interest.

Organo-radical catalysts have recently attracted great interest, and the development of this field can be expected to broaden the applications of organocatalysis. Herein, the first example of a radical-generating system is reported that does not require any photoirradiation, radical initiators, or preactivated substrates. The oxidative C-C-bond cleavage of 2-substituted cyclohexanones was achieved using an azolium salt and a hydroquinone as co-catalysts. The oxidative cleavage of C = C double bonds with molecular oxygen to produce carbonyl compounds is an important transformation in chemical and pharmaceutical synthesis. In nature, enzymes containing the first-row transition metals, particularly heme and non-heme iron-dependent enzymes, readily activate O-2 and oxidatively cleave C = C bonds with exquisite precision under ambient conditions. The reaction remains challenging for synthetic chemists, however. There are only a small number of known synthetic metal catalysts that allow for the oxidative cleavage of alkenes at an atmospheric pressure of O-2, with very few known to catalyze the cleavage of nonactivated alkenes. In this work, we describe a light-driven, Mn-catalyzed protocol for the selective oxidation of alkenes to carbonyls under 1 atm of O-2. For the first time, aromatic as well as various nonactivated aliphatic alkenes could be oxidized to afford ketones and aldehydes under clean, mild conditions with a first row, biorelevant metal catalyst. Moreover, the protocol shows a very good functional group tolerance. Mechanistic investigation suggests that Mn-oxo species, including an asymmetric, mixed-valent bis(mu-oxo)-Mn(III,IV) complex, are involved in the oxidation, and the solvent methanol participates in O-2 activation that leads to the formation of the oxo species.
