The process of spin-selective quenching of a triplet (T) exciton by a fixed spin doublet (D) center in an organic semiconductor nanoparticle (anthracene, tetracene, MEH-PPV) was studied. Random walks of the T-exciton in a spherical nanovolume of a crystal or polymer globule were modeled based on the solution of the Neumann boundary diffusion condition. Time dependences of the spin-nonselective quenching rate of T-excitations were calculated for different values of geometric and diffusion parameters. Taking into account the spin dynamics of T-D-pair reagents allowed calculating magnetic field effects of T-D-quenching rate, which showed a strong influence of the nanoparticles size and initial position of the T-exciton and doublet sink on the absolute value of the effect. The obtained radial dependences of the magnetic field modulation of the quenching efficiency can be approximated by a superposition of two exponents.

We report a visible-light-mediated benzylic C-H oxygenation reaction. The reaction is initiated by solar light or the blue LED activation of 9,10-dibromoanthracene in a reaction with oxygen and takes place at ambient temperature and air pressure. Secondary benzylic positions are oxygenated to ketones, while tertiary benzylic carbons are oxygenated to give hydroperoxides. Notably, cumene hydroperoxide is produced in a higher yield and at milder conditions than the currently employed industrial conditions.

Fermi golden rule and second-order cumulant expansion of the time-dependent density matrix have been used to compute from first principles the rate of intersystem crossing in benzophenone, using minimum-energy geometries and normal modes of vibrations computed at the TDDFT/CAM-B3LYP level. Both approaches yield reliable values of the S-1 decay rate, the latter being almost in quantitative agreement with the results of time-dependent spectroscopic measurements (0.154 ps(-1) observed vs 0.25 ps(-1) predicted). The Fermi golden rule slightly overestimates the decay rate of S-1 state (k(d) = 0.45 ps(-1)) but provides better insights into the chemico-physical parameters, which govern the transition from a thermally equilibrated population of S-1, showing that the indirect mechanism is much faster than the direct one because of the vanishingly small Franck-Condon weighted density of states at Delta E of transition.

Background: The reason why patients photosensitized to the drug ketoprofen (KP) may develop severe photoallergic skin reactions to octocrylene (OCT), an organic ultraviolet filter in sunscreens and cosmetics, remains largely unknown. OCT can be synthesized by using unsubstituted benzophenone (BP), a possible human carcinogen. Objectives: To verify if, and to what extent, BP residues are present in OCT-containing consumer products. Methods: The raw material of OCT and 39 skincare products, of which 28 contain OCT, were chemically analysed for the presence of BP by means of liquid chromatography. Results: In the OCT raw material and in all 28 OCT-containing products the presence of BP could be demonstrated, mostly in concentrations above 10 ppm (0.001%), whereas a majority of OCT-free products (8/11, 73%) did not contain BP. Moreover, BP concentrations significantly increased, in a time- and temperature-dependent manner, likely due to the additional degradation of OCT. Conclusion: Photoallergic contact dermatitis from OCT in patients photosensitized to KP might rely on residual BP impurities. Toxicological and ecological studies that evaluate the safety of OCT might also need to consider the concomitant presence of BP.

A facile synthetic route was developed to prepare a surface-grafted brush layer of poly(vinyl ethers) (PVEs) directly by a radical mechanism, with the naked Li+ acting as a catalyst. Density functional theory calculations suggested that complexation of naked Li+ to VEs significantly reduced the highest unoccupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap from 5.08 to 0.68 eV, providing a better prospect for electron transfer. The structure, morphology, and surface properties of grafted polymer layers were characterized using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic water contact angle (DCA). Moreover, ellipsometry data indicated that the thickness of the polymer brushes was in the range of 20-60 nm, which corresponds to the grafting densities of 0.65-1.15 chain/nm(2), and DCA decreased from 84.4 to 45.3 degrees. Most importantly, no hydrolysis was observed for the modified surface after 30 days of exposure to phosphate-buffered saline solution, 0.1 mol/L NaOH(eq) and 0.1 mol/L HCl(eq), demonstrating excellent hydrolysis resistance with long service life. In addition, as a proof of concept, the side hydroxyl groups of grafted PVEs provide active sites for efficient fixation of bioactive molecules, e.g., glycosaminoglycan and serum protein.

This study aimed to evaluate the presence of ultraviolet filters (UV-Fs), benzotriazoles, pyrethroids and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in freshwater and wastewater from the northern Antarctic Peninsula region. All water samples analyzed contained UV-Fs residues and high concentrations were detected in anthropogenic impacted sites (< LOD up to 1300 ng/L). Likewise, benzotriazoles were detected in all water samples (< LOQ-920 ng/L). Regarding suspended particulate matter, almost all UV-Fs and all benzotriazoles were measured at concentrations ranging from < LOQ to 33 mu g/g dry weight. Pyrethroids were also detected (< LOQ-250 ng/L) and their presence implies the existence of a gateway to the Antarctica Peninsula from other regions. The data confirmed the presence of PFASs (< LOD-7500 ng/L) in this area, in agreement with previous studies. In light of these results, extended monitoring in Antarctica should be carried out to perform a reliable environmental risk assessment leading to propose recommendations to minimize the anthropic impact. We report detailed Rainan spectra for the neutral and radical anion forms of benzophenone, fluorenone, 2,2′-bipyridyl, 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-dipyridyl, and anthracene. Density functional theory (DFT) predictions for the Raman spectra of these molecules give additional insight into the assignment of each vibrational mode. While the use of DFT has been problematic in quantifying the thermochemistry of highly delocalized radicals, we find that DFT-predicted spectra using the popular B3LYP functional are in excellent agreement with the observed Raman spectra. In the case of the two bipyridyl compounds, the Raman spectra allowed us to conclude that the cis form of the radical anion complexed to a sodium cation was the preferred configuration. Benzophenone and fluorenone radical anions gave a significantly weakened C=O bond stretching vibrational frequency as expected from the population of an antibonding pi* orbital. For benzophenone, the C=O vibration dropped from 1659 to 1403 cm(-1) upon reduction. Similarly, fluorenone showed a C=O vibration observed at 1719 cm(-1) for the neutral form that decreased to 1522 cm(-1) for the radical anion. The structurally rigid anthracene showed relatively smaller Raman band shifts upon single-electron reduction as the pi* orbital is more equally delocalized on the entire structure. In total, we correlated 65 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for the neutral molecules with an overall error of 7.1 cm(-1) (root-mean-square errors (RMSEs)) and 67 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for radical anions with an overall error of 9.9 cm(-1). These comparisons between theory and experiment are another example to demonstrate the power of DFT in predicting the identity and geometry of molecules using Raman spectroscopy.

Trace organic contaminants (TOrCs) in waste active sludge (WAS) have caused many concerns due to their recalcitrance and detriment to the performance of anaerobic digestion (AD). In this study, UV (2 h) combined with calcium peroxide (CaO2, 0.1 g g(-1)-VSS (VSS, volatile suspended solid) was proposed as a suitable sludge pretreatment to enhance the AD performance with an increase in the production of maximum total short-chain fatty acids (421.3 %) and methane (119.2 %). Meanwhile, above 50 % removal efficiency for 19 detected TOrCs was achieved. UV and CaO2 had a synergistic effect on the subsequent AD of WAS. Both UV and Ca(OH)(2) produced by CaO2 played important roles in the dissolution of WAS and the subsequent AD, while UV-direct and %OH-indirect photolysis accounted for TOrCs attenuation. In order to predict TOrCs attenuation by UV/CaO2 treatment, a TOrCs photolysis model was tentatively established using carbamazepine as an indicator. This predictive model expressed a good prediction with adj-R-2 = 0.94, and the difference of predicted and measured values was within 27.3 %. This work evaluates a sludge pretreatment for simultaneously TOrCs attenuation and methane accumulation, laying foundation for promotion of sludge resource recycling.

The migration of photoinitiators, phthalates and plasticizers from two paper and cardboard materials into food simulants (50% and 95% EtOH and Tenax) and foodstuffs (rice, cereals and milk powder) was studied. In the case of liquid simulants migration was observed to reach the equilibrium after 60 min and depended on the material type and the physicochemical parameters of the migrants, whereas the temperature (room temperature and 60 degrees C) did not show significant effects. The study of migration of the compounds from a baking paper to Tenax at high temperatures (150 and 250 degrees C) evidenced an increment of migration when increasing temperature, except for the most volatile analytes. Finally, the migration to foodstuffs was studied using fully validated analytical protocols. Overall, the comparison of the migration rates demonstrated that Tenax was adequate for the simulation of the migration to rice and cereals, but underestimated the migration to infant milk powder, for which 95% EtOH resulted a more suitable simulant.

The synthesis of natural products by E. coli is a challenging alternative method of environmentally friendly minimization of hazardous waste. Here, we establish a recombinant E. coli capable of transforming sodium benzoate into 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzophenone (2,4,6-TriHB), the intermediate of benzophenones and xanthones derivatives, based on the coexpression of benzoate-CoA ligase from Rhodopseudomonas palustris (BadA) and benzophenone synthase from Garcinia mangostana (GmBPS). It was found that the engineered E. coli accepted benzoate as the leading substrate for the formation of benzoyl CoA by the function of BadA and subsequently condensed, with the endogenous malonyl CoA by the catalytic function of BPS, into 2,4,6-TriHB. This metabolite was excreted into the culture medium and was detected by the high-resolution LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS. The structure was elucidated by in silico tools: Sirius 4.5 combined with CSI FingerID web service. The results suggested the potential of the new artificial pathway in E. coli to successfully catalyze the transformation of sodium benzoate into 2,4,6-TriHB. This system will lead to further syntheses of other benzophenone derivatives via the addition of various genes to catalyze for functional groups.
