This study aimed to evaluate the presence of ultraviolet filters (UV-Fs), benzotriazoles, pyrethroids and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in freshwater and wastewater from the northern Antarctic Peninsula region. All water samples analyzed contained UV-Fs residues and high concentrations were detected in anthropogenic impacted sites (< LOD up to 1300 ng/L). Likewise, benzotriazoles were detected in all water samples (< LOQ-920 ng/L). Regarding suspended particulate matter, almost all UV-Fs and all benzotriazoles were measured at concentrations ranging from < LOQ to 33 mu g/g dry weight. Pyrethroids were also detected (< LOQ-250 ng/L) and their presence implies the existence of a gateway to the Antarctica Peninsula from other regions. The data confirmed the presence of PFASs (< LOD-7500 ng/L) in this area, in agreement with previous studies. In light of these results, extended monitoring in Antarctica should be carried out to perform a reliable environmental risk assessment leading to propose recommendations to minimize the anthropic impact. Electrocatalytic oxidation has been proven as a sustainable and promising alternative to traditional chemical transformation, but its further development is limited by the use of noble-metal electrocatalysts. Herein, a polyoxometalate-based electrode material, H5PMo10V2O40@CTF (denoted as PMo10V2@CTF), has been successfully fabricated through electrostatic assembly of a molecular polyoxometalate catalyst, PMo10V2, with a porous cationic covalent triazine framework (CTF), which, to our knowledge, represents the first combination of polyoxometalate with a cationic CTF. The resulting PMo10V2@CTF exhibits high activity for the selective electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes, achieving 99% conversion of benzyl alcohol, over 99% selectivity of benzyl aldehyde, and at the same time near unity H-2 production. Notably, the reported electrocatalytic system presents good atom economy, high energy conversion (96% faradaic efficiency), remarkable catalytic activity and robustness for at least eight recycles. Based on the various experimental and spectroscopic analyses, a possible catalytic mechanism was proposed, revealing that such excellent electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the versatile redox ability of PMo10V2 and the good porosity and adsorption property of the CTF in the constructed PMo10V2@CTF composite.

We report that the nucleophilic acyl substitution reaction of aliphatic and (hetero)aromatic amides by organolithium reagents proceeds quickly (20 s reaction time), efficiently, and chemoselectively with a broad substrate scope in the environmentally responsible cyclopentyl methyl ether, at ambient temperature and under air, to provide ketones in up to 93 % yield with an effective suppression of the notorious over-addition reaction. Detailed DFT calculations and NMR investigations support the experimental results. The described methodology was proven to be amenable to scale-up and recyclability protocols. Contrasting classical procedures carried out under inert atmospheres, this work lays the foundation for a profound paradigm shift of the reactivity of carboxylic acid amides with organolithiums, with ketones being straightforwardly obtained by simply combining the reagents under aerobic conditions and with no need of using previously modified or pre-activated amides, as recommended.

Imitating the structures and behaviors of natural creatures is of great significance to scientists to explore novel materials for practical applications. However, the design and fabrication of biomimetic devices with complex and outstanding performances is still on the way. A bilayer film composed of liquid crystalline networks (LCN) film and hydrochromic aggregation-induced-emission molecule-doped hydrophilic layer is prepared. Under different relative humidity, the composite film can deform and change fluorescence color simultaneously. The influence of the content of the hydrophilic matrix on the fluorescent property and humidity-responsive behaviors of the bilayer film is investigated. Thanks to the mechanical anisotropy provided by uniform-aligned LCN film, different modes of deformation of the bilayer film are achievable, like bending, curling, and twisting. More importantly, due to the independence of the LCN film and the non-mesogenic molecules brought by this bimorph strategy, complex alignment of the LCN film and modification by immiscible molecules are realized in a single LCN actuator. Based on the functional composite film, artificial flowers showing synergistic blooming and shape-changing is prepared. By regulating the molecular alignment of the LC mesogens of the LCN film, the artificial flowers can imitate various blooming behaviors of natural flowers like confederate jasmine and jade lotus.

In this work, a novel and high-throughput parallel-dispersive droplet extraction (Pa-DDE) based on in situ formation of the hydrophobic MILs ([Co(C4IM)(4)(+2)]2[NTf2-], [Ni(C4IM)(4)(+2)]2[NTf2-] and [Ni(BeIM)(4)(+2)]2[NTf2]) is demonstrated, for the first time, for the determination of benzophenone, metolachlor, triclocarban, pendimethalin, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, and 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate from aqueous environmental samples. This experimental setup is comprised of a 96-well plate system containing a set of magnetic pins which were used to collect the MIL droplet after in situ formation. This consolidated system enabled simultaneous extraction of up to 96 samples and MIL production in one step. Using this apparatus, sample preparation times of 0.78 min per sample was achieved. The experimental conditions were carefully optimized using uni and multivariate approaches. The optimal conditions were comprised of sample volume of 1.25 mL, 4 mg of [Co (C4IM)(4)(+2)]2[Cl] and 40 mu L of LiNTf2 for the in situ formation, and dilution in 20 mu L of acetonitrile. The analytical parameters of merit were successfully determined with LODs ranging from 7.5 to 25 mu g L-1 and coefficients of determination higher than 0.989. Intraday and interday precision ranged from 6.4 to 20.6% (n = 3) and 11.6-22.9% (n = 9), respectively, with analyte relative recovery ranging between 53.9 and 129.1%.

The rapid and effective removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) from water remains a huge challenge for traditional water treatment techniques. Compared with powder adsorbents such as polymers and nanomaterials, the free-standing adsorptive membrane is possible for large-scale applications and shows promise in removing OMPs. Herein, inspired by aquatic plants, a novel free-standing adsorptive membrane (NPPM) with high water flux, strong adsorption affinity, and excellent reproducibility was prepared by one-step UV surface grafting. N-Vinylformamide (NVF) was employed to introduce multiple hydrophilic and hydrogen bonding sites on the surface of commercial polypropylene fiber membranes (PPM). The NPPM exhibits excellent water permeability and ultrahigh water flux (up to 40 000 L/(m(2) h)) and could continuously remove a broad spectrum of OMPs from water. Its adsorption performance is 5-100 times higher than that of PPM and commercial membranes. Even in natural water sources such as tap water and river water, the NPPM shows unchanged adsorption performance and high OMPs removal efficiency (>95%). Notably, the NPPM has excellent regeneration performance and can be regenerated by hot water elution, which provides an environmentally friendly regeneration method without involving any organic solvent. Moreover, the synergy between hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction is revealed, and the hydrophobic interaction provided by the hydrophobic substrate is proved to play a fundamental role in OMPs adsorption. The strong hydrogen bonds between the grafts and the OMPs are demonstrated by variable-temperature FTIR spectroscopy (vt-FTIR), C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (C-13 NMR), and simulation calculations. The strong hydrogen bonds could increase the enthalpy change and enhance the adsorption affinity, so the NPPM has a strong adsorption affinity, which is 100 times that of similar adsorption membranes. This study not only presents an adsorptive membrane with great commercial potential in the rapid remediation of a water source but also opens a pathway to develop an adsorptive membrane with high water flux and strong adsorption affinity.

Propylene polymerization titanium-magnesium catalysts (TMCs) were synthesized from different magnesium compounds with diphenylketone (DPK) as the internal donor. The catalysts differed by an order of magnitude and more in the content of titanium and donor, activity, specific surface area and pore size. Sizes of MgCl2 crystallites with 110 or 104 lateral cuts were calculated from the Ti/Mg and DPK/Mg values. For highly active TMCs the composition, XRD and specific surface area were in agreement with the MgCl2 crystallites with 104 lateral cuts, TiCl4 adsorption on one magnesium ion and elongated in the 001 direction. Chloroform, a regulated disinfection by-product in water, is often generated during chlorination disinfection treatment. However, the formation of chloroform is heavily dependent on the molecular structures of precursors. Moreover, compounds containing ketone moiety are ubiquitous in water environments. However, it is unclear if they can generate chloroform during chlorination. In this study, 14 benzophenones (BPs), efficient and widely used UV filters, with different substituents were selected to explore chloroform formation during chlorination. All 14 BPs generated chloroform, with yields dependent on their molecular structures and operational conditions. Compounds 2,2′,4,4′-tetrahydroxy-BP and benzophenone produced the highest and lowest chloroform of 0.313 and 0.013 g/g, respectively, corresponding to the fastest and slowest formation rate constants of 1.41 x 10(-1) and 2.71 x 10(-2) min(-1). Alkaline conditions and high chlorine dosages were favorable to chloroform formation. Three reactions played key roles in chloroform formation from BPs: (1) chlorine initiated Baeyer Villiger oxidation converted ketone moieties of BP molecules into esters; (2) the esters further underwent hydrolysis and formed phenolic and benzoic products; and (3) benzoic acids underwent decarboxylation and hydrolysis to form phenolic products. Subsequently, these phenolic products could further generate chloroform in the chlorination system. More importantly, BPs could generate chloroform in the ambient water matrices during practical chlorination treatment. This work emphasized the critical role of Baeyer-Villiger oxidation for chloroform formation, implying that pollutants containing aromatic ketone moieties generate chloroform during chlorination disinfection, and their potential risk should therefore be reviewed. Herein, the facile photografting coating method was used to develop a novel metal biochelator film by covalent immobilization of citric acid (CA) onto polypropylene (PP) surface. First, PP film underwent a surface modification by UV-grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of benzophenone (BP). The concentrations of GMA (bifunctional monomer) and BP (photoinitiator) were appropriately optimized to achieve the breath-figure-array structure and brush-like grafting configuration with a high availability of the reactive oxirane ring. Subsequently, CA was immobilized onto the PP-g-GMA surface via the ring-opening reaction to obtain the biochelator film (PP-g-GMA-g-CA). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and solid state C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy elucidated the chemical structure and grafting mechanism of grafted samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to detect the chemical composition of the surface of the grafted samples, by which the grafting density was relatively estimated. In addition, the uniformity of the grafting pattern and morphology of the grafting unit were observed using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Furthermore, the carboxylic acid density of the biochelator film (PP-g-GMA-g-CA) was quantified using a toluidine blue O assay, in which approximately 327 +/- 58 nM carboxylic acid was detected per each film. The metal chelating activity of the film was also investigated using the colorimetric ferrozine assay, by which PP-g-GMA-g-CA film chelated approximately 215 +/- 11 nM of Fe3+. Therefore, this newly developed system can be used as a versatile metal biochelator in a wide range of biomedical, cosmetic, and packaging applications.
