Nowadays, polypropylene is one of the most common polymers used in the food packaging industry due to its good functionality and relatively low cost. Nevertheless, usage of plastic disposable packaging can be a generator of plastic pollution having negative environmental effects. A feasible solution for this issue would be to recycle. The polypropylene samples were submitted to two processes, forced contamination, and recycling, and they were analyzed by solid-phase microextraction gas chromatograph-olfactometry-mass spectrometry. 45 different volatile compounds were identified and 9 of them presented distinct odoriferous activities. Among them, two important markers were detected: diethyl phthalate (probably coming from the catalyst of PP polymerization, intentionally added substance (IAS)), and glycerine (a marker of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS)).

The formation of C-N bonds is a fundamental bond construction in organic synthesis. In this context, a [RhCp*Cl-2](2)/AgSbF6 system was developed for the C2-amination of ketoximes with anthranils with the use of Piv(2)O as a promoter. Piv(2)O played an important role in the generation of catalytically active species with [RhCp*Cl-2](2). The oxime unit was revealed to be effective chelating groups to activate the aryl C-H bond. The amination shows a wide substrates scope, and several important functional groups were tolerated under the benign reaction conditions.

Non-covalent bonding interactions, such as chalcogen bonding, can have a substantial effect on the electronic and physical properties of conjugated polymers and is largely dependent on the strength of interaction. Functional groups that are traditionally used to instill chalcogen bonding such as alkoxy or fluorine substituents can demand challenging synthetic effort, as well as have drastic effects on the electronics of a pi-system. The incorporation of a N-oxide functionality into bithiazole-containing materials, a synthetically simple transformation, has been entirely overlooked until now. A systematic analysis of the effects of N-oxidation on the electronic and physical properties of bithiazole-containing materials has been undertaken. N-Oxidation has been found to affect the electronic band gap through increase of the HOMO and lowering of the LUMO. Furthermore, exceptionally strong intramolecular S-O chalcogen bonding interactions in the bithiazole core contribute to rigidification of the conjugated system. Computational analysis of this system has shown this N-oxide chalcogen bonding interaction to be significantly stronger than other chalcogen bonding interactions commonly exploited in conjugated materials.

Temperature-enhanced water selectivity of MMMs was demonstrated for the dehydration pervaporation of ethanol solutions. The MMMs synthesized from Polyvinyl alcohol embedded with Poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate)-grafted mesoporous silica nanoparticles revealed a concomitant increasing of the water selectivity and the water flux upon raising feed solution temperature from 30 degrees C to 60 degrees C. This phenomenon is rarely observed in PVA-based MMMs in which the water selectivity usually declines with increasing feed temperature. Remarkably, the temperature enhancing effect was intensified with increasing amount of the grafted PHEMA on MSNs. The enhancement of the water selectivity stems from the superior water absorption selectivity to the water diffusion selectivity because the water absorption by the MMMs is endothermic which gives rise to the favorable absorption as raising feed solution temperature. The incorporation of MSNs-g-PHEMA resulted in improving of both flux and the water selectivity because the mesoporous structure of MSNs-g-PHEMA provides unrestricted and hydrophilic paths for the water permeation.

The utilization of photochemical reaction channel based on radical process is rarely reported, which might be a very efficient and feasible strategy for improving generation of Type I reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this work, a double ionic-type aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) of TIdBO was developed as a photosensitizer, of which the potential photocyclization characteristic involving an electron-transfer process had a positive effect on Type I ROS generation in aggregates under continuous light irradiation. Its noticeable photodynamic therapy (PDT) performance and self-monitoring of PDT process by the relationship between cellular morphology change and fluorescence intensity enhancement were achieved. In addition, it showed a good killing ability to microbes and specific interactions with microbes but not cells by regulating the incubation time. These intriguing results reveal a feasible design principle for the implementation of efficient PS preparation in clinical treatment under hypoxic conditions.

Substituted imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated for their reactivity towards Na12Ge17 as a model system containing redox-sensitive Zintl cluster anions. The ILs proved widely inert for imidazolium cations with a 1,2,3-trisubstitution at least by alkyl groups, and for the anion bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)azanide (TFSI). A minute conversion of Na12Ge17 observed on long-time contact with such ILs was not caused by dissolution of the salt-like compound, and did thus not provide dissolved Ge clusters. Rather, a cation exchange led to the transfer of Na+ ions into solution. In contrast, by using benzophenone as an oxidizer, heterogeneous redox reactions of Na12Ge17 were initiated, transferring a considerable part of Na+ into solution. At optimized conditions, an X-ray amorphous product NaGe6.25 was obtained, which was thermally convertible to the crystalline type-II clathrate Na24-delta Ge136 with almost completely Na-filled polyhedral cages, and alpha-Ge. The presented method thus provides unexpected access to Na24-delta Ge136 in bulk quantities.

A palladium-catalyzed allenamide carbopalladation/allylation with active methine compounds has been developed. Various indoles and isoquinolinones bearing a quaternary carbon center were achieved with good efficiency, a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. This reaction underwent cascade oxidative addition, carbopalladation, and allylic alkylation, and two new C-C bonds were formed in one pot.

Imitating the structures and behaviors of natural creatures is of great significance to scientists to explore novel materials for practical applications. However, the design and fabrication of biomimetic devices with complex and outstanding performances is still on the way. A bilayer film composed of liquid crystalline networks (LCN) film and hydrochromic aggregation-induced-emission molecule-doped hydrophilic layer is prepared. Under different relative humidity, the composite film can deform and change fluorescence color simultaneously. The influence of the content of the hydrophilic matrix on the fluorescent property and humidity-responsive behaviors of the bilayer film is investigated. Thanks to the mechanical anisotropy provided by uniform-aligned LCN film, different modes of deformation of the bilayer film are achievable, like bending, curling, and twisting. More importantly, due to the independence of the LCN film and the non-mesogenic molecules brought by this bimorph strategy, complex alignment of the LCN film and modification by immiscible molecules are realized in a single LCN actuator. Based on the functional composite film, artificial flowers showing synergistic blooming and shape-changing is prepared. By regulating the molecular alignment of the LC mesogens of the LCN film, the artificial flowers can imitate various blooming behaviors of natural flowers like confederate jasmine and jade lotus.

Hypothesis: It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components. Experiments: The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water. Findings: The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a double-separation-strategy. For achieving a well-miscible and highly enhanced polyethylene/ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (PE/ UHMWPE) blend, which is an important blend for polyolefin materials with wide applications, tailored bonded interfacial intermolecular entanglement between the two phases was innovatively constructed via a facile reactive melt process through reaction between epoxy and carboxyl groups grafted onto polymer chains. The UHMWPE phase with obvious decreasing size and distribution was tightly embedded in a PE matrix, and the interfacial transition area increased dramatically, leading to forming a homogeneous and miscible blend. Meanwhile, the viscoelasticity and molecular entanglement density were improved remarkably, indicating an enhanced interfacial intermolecular diffusion, and a tight and robust dual network structure with covalent linkage and intermolecular entanglements was constructed in the blend. Obvious deformation with regular striation and many pulling-out UHMWPE fibrils were observed on an impact-fractured surface, and mechanical strength/toughness of the blend was remarkably enhanced. Furthermore, the wear rate and the friction coefficient were reduced significantly, and the worn surface presented smooth and flat features, confirming highly improved mechanical and tribological properties of the blend. This work provided a facile method to fabricate an enhanced PE/UHMWPE blend with application potential.
