N-Benzyl ketimines undergo [3 + 2] cycloaddition with arylacetylenes in the KOBut/DMSO solution to 2,3,5-triarylpyrrolines, which are oxidized (chloranil, DDQ) in situ to 2,3,5-triaryl-2H-pyrroles in 53-71% yields. The intermediate 1-pyrrolines can be isolated in 31-91% yields and separately oxidized to the corresponding 2H-pyrroles.

The synthesis of benzoborole dianions by alkali metal reduction of BN-naphthalene derivatives via a ring-contraction strategy has been developed. Reduction of 1-alkynyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 a in Et2O led to the elimination of alkynyllithium with the formation of 1-amino-1-benzoborole trilithium salt 2 a, whereas reduction of 1-phenyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 c in THF yielded 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with the elimination of ArNHLi. The trilithium and dilithium salts 2 a and 2 c have been fully characterized. Treatment of trilithium salt 2 a with Et3NHCl led to the selective protonation of the amino lithium to afford the dilithium salt 2 aH, which could be cleanly oxidized to 1-amino-1-benzoborole 3 in an excellent yield. Reaction of 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with MeI yielded the lithium borate 4 c, which is luminescent both in solution and in the solid state.

This study explores the synthesis of cyclic cis-vicinal phenyl ethylenes from oxotriphenylhexanoates. The reaction is a BBr3-promoted cyclization of 1,6-ketoesters (1) to five-membered diketo compounds (2). The synthesis is interesting as it constitutes one of the few examples of modular stereoselective synthesis of structures with a cis-oriented vicinal diphenylethylene. The core structure of 2 can be smoothly derivatized, which makes it a promising synthetic building block for further stereoselective synthetic applications.

Benzophenone is a mutagen, carcinogen, and endocrine disruptor. Its presence in food products or food packaging is banned in the United States. Under California Proposition 65, there is no safe harbor for benzophenone in any personal care products, including sunscreens, anti-aging creams, and moisturizers. The purpose of this study was to determine (1) if benzophenone was present in a wide variety of commercial sun protection factor (SPF)/sunscreen products, (2) whether benzophenone concentration in the product increased over time, and (3) if the degradation of octocrylene was the likely source for benzophenone contamination. Benzophenone concentration was assayed in nine commercial sunscreen products from the European Union and eight from the United States (in triplicate), including two single ingredient sources of octocrylene. These same SPF items were subjected to the United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA)-accelerated stability aging protocol for 6 weeks. Benzophenone was measured in the accelerated-aged products. Sixteen octocrylene-containing product lines that were recently purchased had an average concentration of 39 mg/kg benzophenone, ranging from 6 mg/kg to 186 mg/kg. Benzophenone was not detectable in the product that did not contain octocrylene. After subjecting the 17 products to the U.S. FDA-accelerated stability method, the 16 octocrylene-containing products had an average concentration of 75 mg/kg, ranging from 9.8 mg/kg to 435 mg/kg. Benzophenone was not detectable in the product that did not contain octocrylene. Benzophenone was detected in the pure octocrylene manufactured ingredient. Octocrylene generates benzophenone through a retro-aldol condensation. In vivo, up to 70% of the benzophenone in these sunscreen products may be absorbed through the skin. U.S. FDA has established a zero tolerance for benzophenone as a food additive. In the United States, there were 2999 SPF products containing octocrylene in 2019. The safety of octocrylene as a benzophenone generator in SPF or any consumer products should be expeditiously reviewed by regulatory agencies.

Three new hydridosilazido ligands, -N(SiHMe2)Aryl (Aryl = Ph, 2,6-C6Me2H3 (dmp), 2,6-C(6)iPr(2)H(3) (dipp)) and their rare-earth complexes Ln{N(SiHMe2)Aryl}(3)(THF)(n) (Ln = Sc, Y, Lu; Aryl = Ph, n = 2; Aryl = dmp, n = 1; Aryl = dipp, n = 0) were synthesized to study the relationships among ligand steric properties, secondary Ln <- H-Si bonding, and the reactivity of amide and SiH groups. In these compounds, the steric encumbrance of the aryl group was systematically increased from phenyl to 2,6-dimethylphenyl to 2,6-diisopropylphenyl. NMR, IR, and X-ray diffraction studies of the complexes characterize the number of secondary interactions and additional THF ligands coordinated to the rare-earth centers. The complexes with the smallest phenylsilazido ligands, Ln{N(SiHMe2)PH}(3)(THF)(2), contain features associated with three nonbridging 2-center-2-electron (2c-2e) Si-H bonds. Characterization of intermediate-sized Ln{N(SiHMe2)dmp}(3)THF reveals three and two Li <- H-Si interactions for yttrium and lutetium analogues, respectively, with both metals having one coordinated THF per complex Ln{N(SiHMe2)dipp}(3) is formed solvent-free, and all three ligands adopt Li <- H-Si bonding modes. The reaction between Ln{N(SiHMe2)dipp}(3) and ketones provides the hydrosilylated product via addition of C=O and Si-H bonds, which occurs rapidly even at low temperature. This reaction is proposed to occur through an associative mechanism on the basis of negative activation entropy measured for substitution of pyridine in Ln{N(SiHMe2)dipp}(3)center dot NC5H5. We present an efficient and versatile visible light-driven methodology to transform aryl aldehydes and ketones chemoselectively either to alcohols or to pinacol products with CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots as photocatalysts. Thiophenols were used as proton and hydrogen atom donors and as hole traps for the excited quantum dots (QDs) in these reactions. The two products can be switched from one to the other simply by changing the amount of thiophenol in the reaction system. The core/shell QD catalysts are highly efficient with a turn over number (TON) larger than 4 X 10(4) and 4 X 10(5) for the reduction to alcohol and pinacol formation, respectively, and are very stable so that they can be recycled for at least 10 times in the reactions without significant loss of catalytic activity. The additional advantages of this method include good functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions, the allowance of selectively reducing aldehydes in the presence of ketones, and easiness for large scale reactions. Reaction mechanisms were studied by quenching experiments and a radical capture experiment, and the reasons for the switchover of the reaction pathways upon the change of reaction conditions are provided.

The migration of photoinitiators, phthalates and plasticizers from two paper and cardboard materials into food simulants (50% and 95% EtOH and Tenax) and foodstuffs (rice, cereals and milk powder) was studied. In the case of liquid simulants migration was observed to reach the equilibrium after 60 min and depended on the material type and the physicochemical parameters of the migrants, whereas the temperature (room temperature and 60 degrees C) did not show significant effects. The study of migration of the compounds from a baking paper to Tenax at high temperatures (150 and 250 degrees C) evidenced an increment of migration when increasing temperature, except for the most volatile analytes. Finally, the migration to foodstuffs was studied using fully validated analytical protocols. Overall, the comparison of the migration rates demonstrated that Tenax was adequate for the simulation of the migration to rice and cereals, but underestimated the migration to infant milk powder, for which 95% EtOH resulted a more suitable simulant.
