Patterned substrates for optics, electronics, sensing, lab-on-chip technologies, bioanalytics, clinical diagnostics as well as translational and personalized medicine are typically prepared by additive substrate manufacturing including ballistic printing and microcontact printing. However, ballistic printing (e.g., ink jet and aerosol jet printing, laser-induced forward transfer) involves serial pixel-by-pixel ink deposition. Parallel additive patterning by microcontact printing is performed with solid elastomeric stamps suffering from ink depletion after a few stamp-substrate contacts. The throughput limitations of additive state-of-the art patterning thus arising may be overcome by capillary stamping -parallel additive substrate patterning without ink depletion by mesoporous silica stamps, which enable ink supply through the mesopores anytime during stamping. Thus, either arrays of substrate-bound nanoparticles or colloidal nanodispersions of detached nanoparticles are accessible. Three types of model inks are processed: 1) drug solutions, 2) solutions containing metallopolymers and block copolymers as well as 3) nanodiamond suspensions representing colloidal nanoparticle inks. Thus, aqueous colloidal nanodispersions of stamped drug nanoparticles, regularly arranged ceramic nanoparticles by post-stamping pyrolysis of stamped metallopolymeric precursor nanoparticles and regularly arranged nanodiamond nanoaggregates are obtained. Capillary stamping may overcome the throughput limitations of state-of-the-art additive substrate manufacturing while a broad range of different inks can be processed.

Selective aerobic oxidation of benzylic sp(3) C-H bonds to generate the corresponding ketones was achieved under continuous-flow conditions. The catalysts N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and tert-butyl nitrite (TBN) as the precursor of the radical under aerobic conditions motivated this process. Flow microreactors operating under optimized conditions enabled this oxidation with higher efficiency and a shortened reaction time of 54 s (total time was 10 min), which was improved 466 times compared with the batch parallel reaction (7.0 h). Notably, the catalyst and solvent recycling (92.6 and 94.5%) and scale-up experiments (0.87 g h(-1) in 28 h) demonstrated the practicability of the protocol. The high product selectivity and functional group tolerance of the process allowed the production of ketones in yields of 41.2 to 90.3%. To reveal the versatility and applicability of this protocol, the late-stage modification of an antiepileptic drug to obtain oxcarbazepine was further conducted.

To this end a Rh-catalyzed desymmetrization of dihydrosilanes by way of intramolecular C(sp(2))-H functionalization under simple and mild conditions has now been developed. This method provides easy access to a broad range of chiral monohydrosilanes in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99 % ee). The resulting monohydrosilanes constitute a good platform to access stereogenic silicon compounds, as well as useful compounds to probe silicon stereochemistry.

A series of novel trinuclear ruthenium carbonyl complexes [mu-eta(2)-2-OC6H4-CH=N Ar)](2)Ru-3(CO)(8)[Ar = Ph (8), C6H4-4-Me (9), C6H4-4-CF3 (10), C6H4-4-Cl (11), C6H3-2,6-Me-2 (12), C6H3-2,6-Et-2 (13)] and [mu-eta(2)-2-OC6H4-CH=N-C6H3-2,6(i)Pr(2)]Ru-3(CO)(9) (14) were designed and synthesized. All the seven novel complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. Molecular structures of 8, 11, 13 and 14 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The catalytic performance of these complexes in the oxidation of secondary alcohols was explored and it was found the combination of such complexes and N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMO) exhibits high catalytic activities for the oxidation of secondary alcohols, giving the corresponding carbonyl compounds in excellent yields. A simple protocol to overcome the explosive pentafluoroethylation of carbonyl compounds by HFC-125 is described. The use of potassium (K) bases with triglyme or tetraglyme as a solvent safely yields the pentafluoroethylation products in good to high yields. The experimental results suggest that an encapsulation of the K cation by glymes as K(glyme)(2) inhibits the contact between the K cation and the reactive anionic pentafluoroethyl counterion, preventing their transformation into KF and explosive tetrafluoroethylene (TFE). The generation of sterically demanding [K(G3)(2)](+) and [K(G4)(2)](+) is an effective way as an unstable pentafluoroethyl anion reservoir.

Recently, experimental design has beaten the traditional optimization approach (one variable at a time) by providing better quality for chromatographic separation using minimal effort and resources. Benzophenone (BZP) and [1-(diphenylmethyl)piperazine] (DPP) were reported to be the most toxic impurities for dimenhydrinate (DMH) and cinnarizine (CIN), respectively. Additionally, there is no reported HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of DMH, CIN and their toxic impurities. A custom experimental design was adopted to estimate the optimum conditions that achieved the most acceptable resolution with adequate peak symmetry within the shortest run time. Desirability function was used to define the optimum chromatographic conditions and the optimum separation was achieved using XBridge (R) HPLC RP-C18 (4.6 x 250 mm, 5 mu m), acetonitrile: 0.1% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) in water (90 : 10, v/v) as a mobile phase at flow rate 2 mL min(-1) and UV detection at 215 nm. Method validation was carried out according to ICH guidelines and linearity was achieved in the ranges of 2-25, 1-25, 1-12.5, and 1-12.5 mu g mL(-1) for DMH, CIN, BZP and DPP, respectively. By application of the proposed method to the market dosage form, no interference from excipients was observed. Moreover, the greenness of the method was evaluated using the National Environmental Method Index (NEMI), Analytical Eco-Scale and Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI) metrics and the results revealed the green environmental impact of the developed method.

The development of C-N bond formation reactions is highly desirable due to their importance in biology and chemistry. Recent progress in 3d metal catalysis is indicative of unique selectivity patterns that may permit solving challenges of chemical synthesis. We report here on a catalytic C-N bond formation reaction-the reductive alkylation of nitriles. Aldehydes or ketones and nitriles, all abundantly available and low-cost starting materials, undergo a reductive coupling to form secondary alkylamines and inexpensive hydrogen is used as the reducing agent. The reaction has a very broad scope and many functional groups, including hydrogenation-sensitive examples, are tolerated. We developed a novel cobalt catalyst, which is nanostructured, reusable, and easy to handle. The key seems the earth-abundant metal in combination with a porous support material, N-doped SiC, synthesized from acrylonitrile and a commercially available polycarbosilane.

We report the synthesis of aromatic germanimines [(HMDS)(2)Ge=NAr] (Ar = Ph, Mes, Dipp; Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)) and an investigation into their associated reactivity. [(HMDS)(2)Ge=NPh] decomposes above -30 degrees C, while [(HMDS)(2)Ge=NDipp] engages in an intramolecular reaction at 60 degrees C. [(HMDS)(2)Ge=NMes] was shown to rearrange via a 1,3-silyl migration to give [(HMDS){(SiMe3)-(Mes)N}Ge(NSiMe3)] in a 1:7 equilibrium mixture at room temperature. These latter germanimines react with unsaturated polar substrates such as CO2, ketones, and arylisocyanate via a [2 + 2] cycloaddition pathway.

The in-situ formed metallic Cu particles on the ZrO2 surface were prepared and applied to catalyze dehalogenation of a series of aryl bromides to produce corresponding products in 1-octanol with a yield of >99 %. The mechanistic investigation suggests that the Cu(0) nanoparticles served as hydrogen transfer active sites for degrading alcohols and adsorbing aryl bromides at the reaction system. The results showed that the catalyst was efficient with high reusability. The alcohol not only served as a reducing agent for CuO but also a safe green hydrogen donor. This methodology could be used as a powerful, low-cost, and safe technology for reducing halogenated aromatics.

A sp(3) C-H bond functionalization and C – C bond cleavage were realized by AIBN/0 2 catalyst system, providing a series of benzophenones under mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic study shows that a peroxide intermediate is involved in this transformation, and in the case of diphenylmethanes, the sp(3) C-C bond is cleaved through the peroxide rearrangement, which might provides a new way to cleave relatively strong C-C bond and be applied to more general C-C bond activation.
