The chemical functionalization or modification of polymers to alter or improve the physical and mechanical properties constitutes an important field in macromolecular research. Fabrication of polymeric materials via structural tailoring of commercial or commodity polymers that are produced in vast quantities especially possess unique advantages in material applications. In the present study, we report on benign chemical modification of unsaturated styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) copolymer using available backbone alkene groups. Covalent attachment of aldehyde functional substrates onto reactive isoprene double bond residues was conveniently carried out using UV-induced Paterno-Buchi [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Model organic compounds with different structures were utilized in high efficiency chemical modification of parent polymer chains via oxetane ring formation. Functionalization studies were confirmed via(1)H NMR, FT-IR and SEC analyses. The methodology was extended to covalent crosslinking of polymer chains to obtain organogels with tailorable crosslinking degrees and physical characteristics. Considering the outstanding elastic properties of unsaturated rubbers and their high commercial availability, abundant reactive double bonds in backbone chains of these polymers offer easy to implement structural modification via proposed Paterno-Buchi photocycloaddition.

A gold-catalyzed tandem annulation of propargylic alcohols and pyridylhomopropargylic alcohols is achieved, providing an atom-economical approach to a diverse set of polycyclic dihydrobenzofurans in good yields. The reaction proceeds via the 5-endo-dig cyclization/Meyer-Schuster rearrangement/Friedel-Crafts-type pathway. We quantitatively synthesized N-unsubstituted (N-H) diphenylketimine from benzophenone and ammonia without solvent under ambient conditions on some solid acids, especially the proton-exchanged Y-type zeolite (H-Y), by a simple procedure. Similarly, other N-unsubstituted ketimines were also obtained in high yields by the reaction of alkyl aryl ketones or a dialkyl ketone having alpha-acidic hydrogens with a large excess of ammonia gas at 1 atm. without a solvent with the aid of the zeolite’s high dehydration ability and stabilization effects. Effect of yeast inoculation format (F), temperature (T), and on lees ageing time (t) factors were evaluated on the composition of sparkling wines by a quantitative fingerprint obtained from volatile metabolites and the response of an electronic nose (E-nose). Wines elaborated according the traditional method at 10 and 14 degrees C, free cells and yeast biocapsules formats were monitored at 15 and 24 months of ageing time. Sixty-six volatiles identified and quantified in the eight sampling lots were subjected to a pattern recognition technique. A dual criterion based on univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis (PLS-DA) through the variable importance projection (VIP) values, allowed to identify ten volatiles as potential markers for T factor, eleven fort and twelve for F factors. The discriminant models based on E-nose dataset enable a 100% correct classification of samples, in relation with t and F factors and the 83% for T factor.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have shown promises in numerous applications such as bio-inspired robotics, tactile displays, tunable optics, and microfluidics, owing to their unique combination of large actuation strain, high energy density, and light weight. However, the practical applications of the DEAs have been hindered partly due to their poor reliability and durability under high-strain actuation. A major failure mechanism is from the localized electrical breakdown. Compliant electrodes with self-clearing capability have been studied to prevent premature failures. Here, an interpenetrating bilayer compliant electrode comprising a thin layer of a water-based polyurethane (WPU) overcoated on an ultrathin single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) layer is reported. The thin polyurethane layer serves as the dielectric barrier to suppress corona discharges of the nanotubes in air. The SWNT+WPU bilayer electrode has the capability to self-clear at the breakdown sites, enhancing the fault tolerance and mendability of the DEA at a large-strain actuation. Stable actuation at 150% area strain for 1000 cycles under square-wave voltage and 5.5-h continuous actuation at a constant voltage have been achieved for acrylic elastomer-based DEAs.

The advent of transfer hydrogenation and borrowing hydrogen reactions paved the way to manipulate simple alcohols in previously unthinkable manners and circumvented the need for hydrogen gas. Analogously, transfer hydrocarbylation could greatly increase the versatility of tertiary alcohols. However, this reaction remains unexplored because of the challenges associated with the catalytic cleavage of unactivated C-C bonds. Herein, we report a rhodium(I)-catalyzed shuttle arylation cleaving the C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond in unstrained triaryl alcohols via a redox-neutral beta-carbon elimination mechanism. A selective transfer hydrocarbylation of substituted (hetero)aryl groups from tertiary alcohols to ketones was realized, employing benign alcohols as latent C-nucleophiles. All preliminary mechanistic experiments support a reversible b-carbon elimination/migratory insertion mechanism. In a broader context, this novel reactivity offers a new platform for the manipulation of tertiary alcohols in catalysis.

Defect engineering of nanomaterials has emerged as a promising approach to improve their performance for pollutant removal. However, various nanomaterial defects play variant roles in environmental applications. It is still a challenge to construct multiple defects of composite materials into advantageous aggregates to deal with complicated matrix pollution. In this work, we investigated a series of three-dimensional defect-optimized aerogels (3D DOAs) of graphene oxide (GO) with a covalent triazine framework (CTF) for improved adsorption and photoregeneration performance via tailoring duet carbon and nitrogen defects. Using chemical reduction, carbon defects in GO were gradually repaired and nitrogen defects in CTF were created simultaneously. The carbon defect engineering generated additional nonpolarized electron-depleted sites in GO of 3D DOA for increased adsorption capacities (2417 mu mol/g for benzophenone, 2209 mu mol/g for 4-hydroxybenzophenone, 1957 mu mol/g for 2,2′,4,4′-tetrahydroxybenzophenone). Meanwhile, increasing nitrogen defects of the CTF in 3D DOA would produce midgap states for an extended absorption range of visible light and increased photocatalytic activity to remove adsorbed pollutants. The enhanced adsorption and the superior photocatalytic regeneration soundly corroborated that the performance of 3D DOA was improved effectively by the defect optimization strategy. Moreover, the high stability of 3D DOA and its practical usage were verified in a real water matrix with a 7-day cycle test. The present work highlights an approach of defect optimization for development of a solar-driven, self-regenerative adsorbent for water purification with high efficiency.

It is found that free radicals of (OH)-O-center dot would be generated in KOH solutions at elevated temperatures according to the results of fluorescence analysis. Five kinds of radical inhibitors (tert-butylphenol-containing reagents, 4-amino-tempo, benzophenone, phenothiazine and N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine) were employed as the dopant, separately, to prepare anion exchange membranes (AEMs) based on poly(4-vinylbenzylchloride-styrene). The investigaions on the properties of the prepared AEMs indicate that more radicals might be produced during the degradation of the AEMs via chain propagation reactions. Moreover, the influences of the radical inhibitors on the degradation of the AEMs in 8 M KOH solutions at 80 degrees C are quite different although all these inhibitors could react with (OH)-O-center dot radicals. Therein the radical inhibitors o-, m-, p-tert-butylphenols could effectively enhance the chemical stability of the AEMs. However, when the phenol-containing inhibitors have a large substituent group in its benzene ring, the membranes tend to be brittle during the stability test.

The enantioselective aminocatalytic alpha-chlorination of aldehydes is a challenging reaction because of its tendency to proceed through neutral intermediates in unselective pathways. Herein we report the rational shift to a highly selective reaction pathway involving charged intermediates using hexafluoroisopropanol as solvent. This change in mechanism has enabled us to match and improve upon the yields and enantioselectivities displayed by previous methods while using cheaper aminocatalysts and chlorinating agents, 80-95% less amount of catalyst, convenient temperatures, and shorter reaction times.

Flexible, lightweight and practical luminous fibers have aroused great interest in the field of smart textiles. In this study, we report flexible aggregation induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) fibers which can be produced in a continuous and large-scale way. Fluorescent nanofibers prepared by conjugate electrospinning are wrapped on the surface of flexible core fiber to form a skin-core AIEgen fiber. The electrospinning parameters including spinning concentration, traction rate, spinning rate and tetraphenylethylene (TPE) concentration were designed and optimized via the non-interactive orthogonal experimental design. The optimized flexible AIEgen fiber retains the excellent mechanical properties of core fiber and is equipped with the fluorescence properties of the wrapped fluorescent nanofibers. In addition, the fabricated AIEgen fibers can still exhibit good fluorescence characteristic after being stretched, bent, washed and rubbed, displaying excellent durability. Different from reported luminescent fibers which required an external power supply or complicated preparation process, the flexible AIEgen fibers fabricated in this study can be prepared continuously in a large-scale way and exhibits effectiveness in clothing display, anti-counterfeiting, information transmission and hazardous gas detection, which shows great application potential for wearable smart textiles.
