Alkoxycarbonylations are important and versatile reactions that result in the formation of a new C-C bond. Herein, we report on a new and halide-free alkoxycarbonylation reaction that does not require the application of an external carbon monoxide atmosphere. Instead, manganese carbonyl complexes and organo(alkoxy)borate salts react to form an ester product containing the target C-C bond. The required organo(alkoxy)borate salts are conveniently generated from the stoichiometric reaction of an organoborane and an alkoxide salt and can be telescoped without purification. The protocol leads to the formation of both aromatic and aliphatic esters and gives complete control over the ester’s substitution (e.g., OMe, (OBu)-Bu-t, OPh). A reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of stoichiometric reactivity studies, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The new chemistry is particularly relevant for the field of Mn(I) catalysis and clearly points to a potential pathway toward irreversible catalyst deactivation.

Although synthetic antioxidants (AOs) and photoinitiators (PIs) are known to be used in printing inks, there are little data on residual concentrations in printing paper products. In the present study, twenty-five PIs, ten AOs, and six transformation products were analyzed in two types of printing paper products, magazines and paperboard food packaging materials, both of which are unavoidable everyday products in our life. Nine AOs and six transformation products can be detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (geometric mean, GM) of 1.16 x 10(4) ng/dm2. Twenty-two PIs were detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (GM) of 1.76 x 10(4) ng/dm2. These chemicals were also detected in magazines, albeit at low concentrations (GM of AOs: 466 ng/dm(2), GM of PIs: 1.17 x 10(3) ng/dm(2)). Magazine front covers were found to have much higher concentrations of the target compounds than magazine inside pages. Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168O), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), bisphenol A (BPA), and benzophenone (BP) were among the predominant chemicals in those printing paper products. Preliminary calculations suggest that dermal exposure to AOs (GM: 6.25 ng/day) and PIs (GM: 17.0 ng/day) via contact with printing paper products is a minor exposure pathway compared to food intake/dust ingestion and is exceedingly unlikely to cause adverse health effects.

A series of four-armed poly(d,l-lactide)-block-poly(l-lactide) (4-DL-D) copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization. By fixing the poly(d,l-lactide) (PDLLA) block length (1 kg mol(-1)) and changing the poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) block length (M-n,M-PDLA = 0, 0.5, 1.1, 1.3, 1.8 and 2.6 kg mol(-1)), the crystallization and alkaline degradation of the PLLA/4-DL-D blends were investigated. The four-armed PDLLA core of the copolymer inhibited the crystallization of PLLA, while the outer PDLA block could affect the crystallization differently when its length changed. If M-n,M-PDLA was 0 or 0.5 kg mol(-1), the crystallization of PLLA in the PLLA/4-DL-D blend was retarded markedly and the degradation rate of the blend films was much faster than that of neat PLLA film. Interestingly, when M-n,M-PDLA was 1.1 kg mol(-1) or higher, stereocomplex (SC) crystallites with different morphologies were formed, and the degradation rate of the PLLA/4-DL-D blend decreased gradually with increasing M-n,M-PDLA. In the PLLA/4-DL-D1.1 blend, the SC crystallites acted as nucleators for PLLA homocrystallites, while in the PLLA/4-DL-D1.3 blend, small isolated SC crystallites were observed inside the PLLA homospherulites. When M-n,M-PDLA was 1.8 or 2.6 kg mol(-1), a network structure of SC crystallites was formed and the degradation resistance of the films was markedly enhanced. A possible isothermal crystallization mechanism was proposed for the PLLA/4-DL-D blends, and the relationship between the crystallization state and degradation behavior was explored. This work revealed that the crystallization state, which was controlled by the PDLA block length, had a significant effect on the degradation behavior of PLLA/4-DL-D blend films. A series of novel trinuclear ruthenium carbonyl complexes [mu-eta(2)-2-OC6H4-CH=N Ar)](2)Ru-3(CO)(8)[Ar = Ph (8), C6H4-4-Me (9), C6H4-4-CF3 (10), C6H4-4-Cl (11), C6H3-2,6-Me-2 (12), C6H3-2,6-Et-2 (13)] and [mu-eta(2)-2-OC6H4-CH=N-C6H3-2,6(i)Pr(2)]Ru-3(CO)(9) (14) were designed and synthesized. All the seven novel complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. Defect engineering of nanomaterials has emerged as a promising approach to improve their performance for pollutant removal. However, various nanomaterial defects play variant roles in environmental applications. It is still a challenge to construct multiple defects of composite materials into advantageous aggregates to deal with complicated matrix pollution. In this work, we investigated a series of three-dimensional defect-optimized aerogels (3D DOAs) of graphene oxide (GO) with a covalent triazine framework (CTF) for improved adsorption and photoregeneration performance via tailoring duet carbon and nitrogen defects. Using chemical reduction, carbon defects in GO were gradually repaired and nitrogen defects in CTF were created simultaneously. The carbon defect engineering generated additional nonpolarized electron-depleted sites in GO of 3D DOA for increased adsorption capacities (2417 mu mol/g for benzophenone, 2209 mu mol/g for 4-hydroxybenzophenone, 1957 mu mol/g for 2,2′,4,4′-tetrahydroxybenzophenone). Meanwhile, increasing nitrogen defects of the CTF in 3D DOA would produce midgap states for an extended absorption range of visible light and increased photocatalytic activity to remove adsorbed pollutants. The enhanced adsorption and the superior photocatalytic regeneration soundly corroborated that the performance of 3D DOA was improved effectively by the defect optimization strategy. Moreover, the high stability of 3D DOA and its practical usage were verified in a real water matrix with a 7-day cycle test. The present work highlights an approach of defect optimization for development of a solar-driven, self-regenerative adsorbent for water purification with high efficiency.

Selective aerobic oxidation of benzylic sp(3) C-H bonds to generate the corresponding ketones was achieved under continuous-flow conditions. The catalysts N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and tert-butyl nitrite (TBN) as the precursor of the radical under aerobic conditions motivated this process. Flow microreactors operating under optimized conditions enabled this oxidation with higher efficiency and a shortened reaction time of 54 s (total time was 10 min), which was improved 466 times compared with the batch parallel reaction (7.0 h). Notably, the catalyst and solvent recycling (92.6 and 94.5%) and scale-up experiments (0.87 g h(-1) in 28 h) demonstrated the practicability of the protocol. The high product selectivity and functional group tolerance of the process allowed the production of ketones in yields of 41.2 to 90.3%. To reveal the versatility and applicability of this protocol, the late-stage modification of an antiepileptic drug to obtain oxcarbazepine was further conducted.

Imitating the structures and behaviors of natural creatures is of great significance to scientists to explore novel materials for practical applications. However, the design and fabrication of biomimetic devices with complex and outstanding performances is still on the way. A bilayer film composed of liquid crystalline networks (LCN) film and hydrochromic aggregation-induced-emission molecule-doped hydrophilic layer is prepared. Under different relative humidity, the composite film can deform and change fluorescence color simultaneously. The influence of the content of the hydrophilic matrix on the fluorescent property and humidity-responsive behaviors of the bilayer film is investigated. Thanks to the mechanical anisotropy provided by uniform-aligned LCN film, different modes of deformation of the bilayer film are achievable, like bending, curling, and twisting. More importantly, due to the independence of the LCN film and the non-mesogenic molecules brought by this bimorph strategy, complex alignment of the LCN film and modification by immiscible molecules are realized in a single LCN actuator. Based on the functional composite film, artificial flowers showing synergistic blooming and shape-changing is prepared. By regulating the molecular alignment of the LC mesogens of the LCN film, the artificial flowers can imitate various blooming behaviors of natural flowers like confederate jasmine and jade lotus.

We quantitatively synthesized N-unsubstituted (N-H) diphenylketimine from benzophenone and ammonia without solvent under ambient conditions on some solid acids, especially the proton-exchanged Y-type zeolite (H-Y), by a simple procedure. Similarly, other N-unsubstituted ketimines were also obtained in high yields by the reaction of alkyl aryl ketones or a dialkyl ketone having alpha-acidic hydrogens with a large excess of ammonia gas at 1 atm. without a solvent with the aid of the zeolite’s high dehydration ability and stabilization effects. Membrane fouling is a major challenge for long-term oil/water separation. The incomplete degradation of organic pollutants or membrane damage exists in the common methods of membrane regeneration. Herein, a dual-responsive nanofibrous membrane with high water-in-oil emulsion separation efficiency and smart cleaning properties is reported, which shows complete restoration of its original separation performance. The pH-responsive and upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type thermoresponsive nanofibrous membrane with a micro/nanosphere structure was developed via a one-step-blending electrospinning strategy. The membrane displays high hydrophobicity/oleophilicity at pH 7 and 25 degrees C and hydrophilicity/oleophobicity at pH 3 and 55 degrees C. As a result, it exhibits an ultrahigh permeability of 60528.76 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) and a separation efficiency of 99.5% for water-in-D5 emulsions at room temperature (25 degrees C). Moreover, the contaminated membranes could be easily reclaimed by being rinsed with warm acidic water (pH 3 and 55 degrees C). The membrane maintained high separation performance after being used for multiple cycles, indicating its scalable application for purifying emulsified oil. This study provides a facial method of constructing membranes with multiscale hierarchical structures and a new idea for the design of recyclable oil/water separation membranes.

Trace organic contaminants (TOrCs) in waste active sludge (WAS) have caused many concerns due to their recalcitrance and detriment to the performance of anaerobic digestion (AD). In this study, UV (2 h) combined with calcium peroxide (CaO2, 0.1 g g(-1)-VSS (VSS, volatile suspended solid) was proposed as a suitable sludge pretreatment to enhance the AD performance with an increase in the production of maximum total short-chain fatty acids (421.3 %) and methane (119.2 %). Meanwhile, above 50 % removal efficiency for 19 detected TOrCs was achieved. UV and CaO2 had a synergistic effect on the subsequent AD of WAS. Both UV and Ca(OH)(2) produced by CaO2 played important roles in the dissolution of WAS and the subsequent AD, while UV-direct and %OH-indirect photolysis accounted for TOrCs attenuation. In order to predict TOrCs attenuation by UV/CaO2 treatment, a TOrCs photolysis model was tentatively established using carbamazepine as an indicator. This predictive model expressed a good prediction with adj-R-2 = 0.94, and the difference of predicted and measured values was within 27.3 %. This work evaluates a sludge pretreatment for simultaneously TOrCs attenuation and methane accumulation, laying foundation for promotion of sludge resource recycling.
