Designing surface-confined molecular systems capable of expressing changes in functional properties as a result of slight variations in chemical structure under the influence of an external stimulus is of contemporary interest. In this context, we have designed three tetraterpyridine ligands with variations in their core architecture (phenyl vs tetraphenylethynyl vs bithiophene) to create spray-coated electrochromic assemblies of iron(II)-based metallosupramolecular polymer network films on transparent conducting oxide substrates. These assemblies exhibited molecular permeability and spectroelectrochemical properties that are in turn dictated by the ligand structure. Electrochromic films with high coloration efficiencies (up to 1050 cm(2)/C) and superior optical contrast (up to 76%) with a concomitant color-to-color redox transition were readily achieved. These functional switching elements were integrated into sandwich-type electrochromic cells (CE up to 641 cm(2)/C) that exhibited high contrast ratios of up to 56%, with attractive ON-OFF ratios, fast switching kinetics, and high operational stability. Every measurable spectroelectrochemical property of the films and devices is an associated function of the ligand structure that coordinates the same metal ion to different extents. While exhibiting a ligand-structure induced differential metal coordination leading to porosity and spectroelectrochemical diversification, these assemblies allow the creation of electrochromic patterns and images by a simple spray-coating technique.

In this context, a [RhCp*Cl-2](2)/AgSbF6 system was developed for the C2-amination of ketoximes with anthranils with the use of Piv(2)O as a promoter. Piv(2)O played an important role in the generation of catalytically active species with [RhCp*Cl-2](2). The oxime unit was revealed to be effective chelating groups to activate the aryl C-H bond. Bismuth(iii)-catalyzed regioselective functionalization at the C-6 position of tetrahydroquinolines and the C-5 position of indolines has been demonstrated. For the first time, one pot symmetrical and unsymmetrical arylation of isatins with tetrahydroquinolines was accomplished giving a completely new product skeleton in good to excellent yields. Most importantly, this protocol leads to the formation of a highly strained quaternary carbon stereogenic center, which is a challenging task. Benzhydryl and 1-phenylethyl trichloroacetimidates have been used as the alkylating partners to functionalize the C-6 and C-5 positions of tetrahydroquinolines and indolines, respectively. The scope of the developed methodology has been extended for the synthesis of the bioactive CYP19-inhibitor and its analogue.

We report the synthesis of a new series of aryl- and heteroaryl (hydroxy)ethyl selenoamides, in a two-step, one-pot sequence based on the aminolysis/selenative demetalation of Fischer ethoxycarbene complexes, in good to excellent global yields, as small cytotoxic molecules. The molecular structure of a 2-thienyl based selenoamide was confirmed by single-crystal X-Ray diffraction analysis. In vitro analysis against different human cancer (HCT-15, U251 and PC-3) and human T-lymphocyte (MT2) cell lines revealed that the 2-thienyl based selenoamide can be considered a potent and selective compound against the human prostatic adenocarcinoma (PC-3) cell line with an IC50 value of 14.5 mu M. Propylene polymerization titanium-magnesium catalysts (TMCs) were synthesized from different magnesium compounds with diphenylketone (DPK) as the internal donor. The catalysts differed by an order of magnitude and more in the content of titanium and donor, activity, specific surface area and pore size. Sizes of MgCl2 crystallites with 110 or 104 lateral cuts were calculated from the Ti/Mg and DPK/Mg values. For highly active TMCs the composition, XRD and specific surface area were in agreement with the MgCl2 crystallites with 104 lateral cuts, TiCl4 adsorption on one magnesium ion and elongated in the 001 direction. For low-activity TMCs obtained by reacting Mg with BuCl, the sizes of MgCl2 crystallites in different directions were close. Activity of the catalysts was inversely proportional to the crystallite size calculated from the TMC composition. This dependence was preserved for the catalysts obtained via the substitution of ketone by phthalate.

Purpose Wound healing after Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation often entails fibrosis as a foreign body reaction to the silicone plate. Poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) forms an antifouling surface that inhibits fibrosis during wound healing. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of the implantation of AGV coated with PMPC (wPMPC) versus AGV without PMPC (woPMPC) in rabbits. Methods Six New Zealand White rabbit does underwent AGV implantation in both eyes. For each rabbit, one eye was randomly selected for implantation of AGV wPMPC and a conventional AGV (woPMPC) was implanted in the contralateral eye. Gross conjunctival vascularity was compared between the two groups at the first, second, and fourth weeks after surgery. The eyes were enucleated in four weeks and subjected to staining with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson’s trichrome stain. The fibrosis and inflammation status among the eye samples were compared by measuring the thickness of the fibrotic walls and counting the number of chronic inflammatory cells around the AGV. Counting of inflammatory cells and measuring fibrotic wall thickness were done in a blinded method to eliminate observer bias. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results Gross and histological examinations revealed no toxic effects of PMPC. There were no apparent differences in overall conjunctival vascularity between the two groups at weeks 1, 2, and 4 after surgery. The average inflammatory cell counts were 14.3 5.8 per slide and 27.3 +/- 8.6 per slide in the wPMPC and woPMPC groups, respectively (p = 0.037). The average thicknesses of the fibrotic wall were 57.9 +/- 11.3 mu m and 81.5 +/- 21.3 mu m in the wPMPC and woPMPC groups, respectively (p = 0.025). Conclusion Compared to the woPMPC group, the number of inflammatory cells and fibrosis were significantly decreased in the wPMPC group.

A (bis)azolium salt [L1-H-2]Br-2 (5), synthesized following multistep procedures, was realized to be a suitable platform for accessing the bis(NHC) ligand supported heterobimetallic Ir-III-M (M = Pd-II/Au-I) complexes via a sequential metalation strategy for their potential catalytic applications in one-pot tandem organic transformations. First, the reaction of 5 with 0.5 equiv of [Ir(Cp*)Cl-2](2) selectively yielded a monometallic Ir-III complex 6, which was further metalated using Pd(OAc)(2)/NaOAc to afford the heterobimetallic Ir-III-Pd-II complex 7. On the other hand, complex 6 was reacted with Ag2O, followed by transmetalation with [Au(SMe2)Cl] in a one-pot manner, to yield the Ir-III-Au-I complex 8. Further, the related homobimetallic Ir-III and Pd-II complexes 9 and 10, respectively, have also been synthesized directly from [L1-H-2]Br-2. All the homo/heterobimetallic complexes have been well-characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, ESI-mass spectrometry, and via single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the complexes 7, 8, and 10. The heterobimetallic Ir-III-Pd-II complex 7 has been tested as a catalyst for three one-pot tandem catalytic reactions: (a) Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and transfer hydrogenation of ketones, (b) hydrodefluorination and transfer hydrogenation of ketones, and (c) hydrodehalogenation and transfer hydrogenation of imines. Importantly, the catalytic activity of heterobimetallic complex 7 in the above-mentioned reactions was found to be better than the mixture of their corresponding homobimetallic counterparts 9 and 10, keeping the concentration of the metal centers constant. These observations affirm some sort of cooperativity between the two metal centers (Ir and Pd) connected via a single ligand frame in 7 when catalytic activity is concerned, which thus constitutes a superior catalytic system than that of the cases where two separate metal complexes (hence, the two metal centers are not connected by a single ligand framework) are used.

The fundamental thermodynamic property of a cocrystal is its formation energy, often referred to as Gibbs free energy of formation, Delta G(f), which is essential to provide insights into its preparation and stability. Most experimental methods of determining Delta G(f) of a cocrystal from its solubility and those of the pure components assume ideal intermolecular interactions among the components, i.e., where the strength and nature of interactions between different components are regarded identical with those in the pure components. However, in most real systems of interest, the interactions between the cocrystal components and their interactions with the solvent often deviate from ideality because of differences in polarity, hydrogen-bonding propensity, and dispersion forces, leading to nonideal mixing effects on their properties. In this article, a ternary phase diagram (TPD) is utilized to elucidate how nonideal mixing among the components affect the Delta G(f) determination of cocrystals and a simple equation is proposed to determine the same. Additionally, the use of a TPD in determining Delta G(f) values of a few cocrystals is described using this equation. The significance and limitations of the derived equation in determining Delta G(f) are also discussed.

Heat processing of ready-to-drink beverages is required to ensure a microbiologically safe product, however, this can result in the loss of bioactive compounds responsible for functionality. The objective of this study was to establish the thermal stability of a novel dihydrochalcone, 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxyphloretin (2), 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosylphloretin (3) and other Cyclopia subternata phenolic compounds, in model solutions with or without citric acid and ascorbic acid. The solutions were heated at 93, 121 and 135 degrees C, relevant to pasteurisation, commercial sterilisation and ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurisation, respectively. For most compounds, the acids decreased the second order reaction rate constants, up to 27 times. Compound 2 (46.29 +/- 0.53 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)), and to a lesser extent compound 3 (5.94 +/- 0.01 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)) were the most thermounstable compounds when treated at 135 degrees C without added acids. Even though differential effects were observed for compounds at different temperatures and formulations, overall, the phenolic compounds were most stable under UHT pasteurisation conditions.
