Mango seed kernel is a by-product which is usually discarded. However, it has been confirmed in this study that seed kernel exhibits more phenolic compounds with bioactive properties than edible fraction of mango. The influence of factors such as cultivar and maturation degree on the phenolic composition has been studied to evaluate nutraceutical value. The comprehensive analysis of phenolic composition by HPLC-DAD-Q-ToF-MS seed kernel from different cultivars (‘Keth’, ‘Kent’and ‘Osteen’) at five maturation stages was conducted. Results evidenced that `Keitt’ samples exhibited higher quantities of iriflophenone glucoside, maclurin C-glucoside, maclurin digalloyl glucoside, mangiferin, 5-galloyl quinic acid and trigalloyl glucose at the first three ripening stages. However, seed kernel from `Osteen’ variety showed higher amounts of hexa- and hepta-gallotannins whose concentrations diminished over the maturation course. Therefore, cultivar and maturation stage factors should be take into account due to their influence on the phenolic composition and subsequently on the nutraceutical value.

Oxidation reactions have been extensively studied in the context of the transformations of biomass-derived furans. Liquid chromatography enantioseparation and determination of enantiomeric purity of synthetized xanthone and benzophenone derivatives comprising one or more chiral moieties are reported. High enantioselectivity and resolution were observed in (S,S)-Whelk-O1 chiral stationary phase (CSP) for the enantiomeric mixtures of compounds comprising an aromatic ring linked to the stereogenic center(s), with alpha values ranging from 1.35 to 4.15 and Rs values ranging from 2.22 to 13.87. Among all the tested enantiomeric mixtures, those comprising three chiral moieties positioned in the xanthone scaffold gave the best chromatographic results. Enantiomers comprising an alkyl chain linked to the stereogenic centers were enantioseparated on a Lux (R) Celullose-2 CSP. For both CSPs, the elution was performed in polar organic mode. The enantiomeric ratio (e.r.) values were always higher than 99%. Additionally, assessment of chiral recognition mechanisms on (S,S)-Whelk-O1 CSP was performed by molecular docking approach, which are in accordance with the chromatographic parameters. The nature and number of chiral moieties in the central aromatic scaffold of either xanthone or benzophenone derivatives are proved to be crucial for enantiorecognition. The evaluation of the growth inhibition of human tumor cell lines revealed that (S,S)-(+)-5 was the most potent compound, with values of GI(50) of 12.83 +/- 2.09 mu M for A375-C5 melanoma, 12.40 +/- 1.16 mu M for MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma, and 13.06 +/- 1.29 mu M for NCI-H460 non-small cell lung cancer. In some cases, the growth inhibitory effects demonstrated to be dependent on the stereochemistry of the compounds.

Although synthetic antioxidants (AOs) and photoinitiators (PIs) are known to be used in printing inks, there are little data on residual concentrations in printing paper products. In the present study, twenty-five PIs, ten AOs, and six transformation products were analyzed in two types of printing paper products, magazines and paperboard food packaging materials, both of which are unavoidable everyday products in our life. Nine AOs and six transformation products can be detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (geometric mean, GM) of 1.16 x 10(4) ng/dm2. Twenty-two PIs were detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (GM) of 1.76 x 10(4) ng/dm2. These chemicals were also detected in magazines, albeit at low concentrations (GM of AOs: 466 ng/dm(2), GM of PIs: 1.17 x 10(3) ng/dm(2)). Magazine front covers were found to have much higher concentrations of the target compounds than magazine inside pages. Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168O), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), bisphenol A (BPA), and benzophenone (BP) were among the predominant chemicals in those printing paper products. Preliminary calculations suggest that dermal exposure to AOs (GM: 6.25 ng/day) and PIs (GM: 17.0 ng/day) via contact with printing paper products is a minor exposure pathway compared to food intake/dust ingestion and is exceedingly unlikely to cause adverse health effects.

The coordinatively unsaturated manganase(II) bis(supersilyl) complex Mn[Si(SiMe3)(3)](2)(THF)(2) (2) was synthesized in one step via the reaction of MnBr2 with two equivalents of KSi(SiMe3)(3) in THF. Complex 2 acts as an effective precatalyst for the catalytic hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones with 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS). The catalytic efficiency can be improved by combining 2 and adamantyl isocyanide (CNAd). The stoichiometric reaction of 2 and two equivalents of CNAd led to the isolation of Mn[Si(SiMe3)(3)](2)(CNAd)(2) (3) in high yield. Complex 3 shows superior catalytic performance than 2 in the hydrosilylation of relatively unreactive ketones.

The rapid cis-trans isomerization of alpha-anionic stilbene was regioselectively controlled by using flow microreactors, and its reaction with various electrophiles was conducted. We report detailed Rainan spectra for the neutral and radical anion forms of benzophenone, fluorenone, 2,2′-bipyridyl, 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-dipyridyl, and anthracene. Density functional theory (DFT) predictions for the Raman spectra of these molecules give additional insight into the assignment of each vibrational mode. While the use of DFT has been problematic in quantifying the thermochemistry of highly delocalized radicals, we find that DFT-predicted spectra using the popular B3LYP functional are in excellent agreement with the observed Raman spectra. In the case of the two bipyridyl compounds, the Raman spectra allowed us to conclude that the cis form of the radical anion complexed to a sodium cation was the preferred configuration. Benzophenone and fluorenone radical anions gave a significantly weakened C=O bond stretching vibrational frequency as expected from the population of an antibonding pi* orbital. For benzophenone, the C=O vibration dropped from 1659 to 1403 cm(-1) upon reduction. Similarly, fluorenone showed a C=O vibration observed at 1719 cm(-1) for the neutral form that decreased to 1522 cm(-1) for the radical anion. The structurally rigid anthracene showed relatively smaller Raman band shifts upon single-electron reduction as the pi* orbital is more equally delocalized on the entire structure. In total, we correlated 65 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for the neutral molecules with an overall error of 7.1 cm(-1) (root-mean-square errors (RMSEs)) and 67 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for radical anions with an overall error of 9.9 cm(-1). These comparisons between theory and experiment are another example to demonstrate the power of DFT in predicting the identity and geometry of molecules using Raman spectroscopy.

The volatile compounds of Jiaozi-steamed breads (JSBs) fermented by Jiaozi starters from eight regions in China were extracted using simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) and headspace solid-phase microextraction and determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 1-Hexanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, phenylethyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, naphthalene, ethanol, acetic acid, and n-hexadecanoic acid were the main volatiles of JSBs. Principal component analysis exhibited that the volatiles of JSBs from Nanyang City, Xi’an City, and Zhumadian City was negatively correlated to that of other five JSB samples. Cluster analysis demonstrated that the volatile characteristics of JSBs from Heze City, Minqin County, Taian City, Weinan City, and Yuncheng City belonged to a category, and the JSBs of Nanyang City, Xi’an City, and Zhumadian City were different from other five JSBs. It demonstrated that the volatile components of steamed breads in North China and South China were different. Practical applications From this study, it can be seen that simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) can completely extract volatile compositions of steamed breads fermented by Chinese traditional starter Jiaozi. SDE/GC-MS was suitable for the analysis of JSBs volatile composition. The relative contents of 1-hexanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, phenylethyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, naphthalene, ethanol, acetic acid, and n-hexadecanoic acid in JSBs were at high level, and their contents could be used as a marker to identify JSBs. The volatile compositions of JSBs made of Jiaozi starters from Heze City, Minqin County, Taian City, Weinan City, and Yuncheng City were similar. However, JSBs of Nanyang City, Xi’an City, and Zhumadian City were different from other five JSBs. The volatile components of steamed breads in North China and South China were different, which reflected the difference in dietary habit in the southern and northern areas of China.
