Objective: To assess the antidiabetic effect of Opuntia dillenii seed oil on rats with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A rat diabetes model was established by intraperitoneal injection of rats with 50 mg/kg streptozotocin. Thirty albino Wistar rats were divided into five groups: the diabetic control group and normal control group were treated only with distilled water, two diabetic groups received 1 and 2 mL/kg of oil per day, respectively, for 30 days and one diabetic group received 2 mg/kg of glibenclamide. In addition, blood glucose was determined weekly. Body weight, average daily food, water intake and urinary volume of each animal were determined before and after the treatment period. After the treatment period, hepatic glycogen was determined using the anthrone reagent, and glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid were estimated using common clinical diagnostic kits. Results: Oral intake of the oil at 1 and 2 mL/kg for the diabetic animals significantly diminished blood glucose, glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid, accompanied by a noticeable elevation in the amount of hepatic glycogen in comparison with the diabetic control group. Similarly, Opuntia dillenii seed oil significantly increased the food intake and decreased the urinary volume per day in treated rats of the same groups in comparison with the period before the treatment intervention and attenuated body weight loss in the diabetic rats. Moreover, this effect of the oil was dose dependent. On the other hand, the oil did not affect their need for water. Conclusions: The results show that Opuntia dillenii seed oil has a very important antidiabetic effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Hence, we suggest it as a preventive control of diabetes mellitus.

Media coverage of disasters potentially damages mental health. Moreover, its effects may differ as recipients may have different emotional responses toward media. The present study examined whether social capital, known to be protective against mental problems, influences a recipient’s emotional response toward news media broadcasting of natural disasters via newspapers, television and internet in Japan. Three social capital components, social participation, social support and cognitive social capital, were considered in the present study as each component reportedly had different effect on mental health. This nationwide cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 2015 among 1,200 Japanese citizens aged 15 to 79 years who were selected using the multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected via the drop-off pick-up method using a printed structured questionnaire. Negative and positive emotions were classified based on recipients’ responses against news media. Among 1,190 participants who reported emotions toward news media, 30.9% (368) had experienced any natural disasters, 37.4% (445) belonged to at least one formal or informal organization (social participation), 40.2% (478) had high social support, and 68.8% (819) had high cognitive social capital. High social support was associated with both reduced negative emotional response (OR 0.66, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.47-0.93) and increased positive emotional response (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.04-2.12) in multivariate analyses, while high cognitive social capital was only associated with increased positive emotional response (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.11-2.37). These results suggest protective effects of social support and cognitive social capital against news media coverage of natural disasters.

This study’s aim was to determine the pesticide residues in 10 different vegetable commodities from the Asir region, Saudi Arabia. We evaluated 211 vegetable samples, collected from supermarkets between March 2018 and September 2018, for a total of 80 different pesticides using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) after extraction with a multi-residue method (the QuEChERS method). The results were assessed according to the maximum residue limit (MRL) provided by European regulations for each pesticide in each commodity. All lettuce, cauliflower, and carrot samples were found to be free from pesticide residues. A total of 145 samples (68.7%) contained detectable pesticide residues at or lower than MRLs, and 44 samples (20.9%) contained detectable pesticide residues above MRLs. MRL values were exceeded most often in chili pepper (14 samples) and cucumber (10 samples). Methomyl, imidacloprid, metalaxyl, and cyproconazole were the most frequently detected pesticides. Based on the results of this study, we recommend that a government-supported program for the monitoring of pesticide residues in vegetables be established to promote consumers’ health and achieve sustainable farming systems.

Flexible fiber-type solid-state supercapacitors (FSCs) are demanded for energy storage of wearable soft electronics. A flexible carbon fiber (CF) with high electrical conductivity and good energy storage ability can act as the current collector and the active material simultaneously. Improving the energy storage ability of the CF without depositing active materials is highly promising to avoid active materials from peeling off, especially under bending conditions. In this study, the CF is treated with acid mixtures containing different HNO3 to H2SO4 ratios. The roughened surface and the production of graphene quantum dots and functional groups are achieved for the acid-treated CF, especially for the CF treated with the acid mixtures. The largely enhanced specific capacitance (C-L) is first obtained for the optimized CF electrode (641.08 mF/cm at 5 mV/s) treated with the acid mixture containing the HNO3 to H2SO4 ratio of 1 to 3. The FSC also shows a maximum energy density of 16.57 mu W h/cm at the power density of 62.50 mu W/cm, as well as a C-L retention of 77% and Coulombic efficiency of 100% in 5000 times of a charge/discharge cycling process. Excellent flexibility is also attained for the FSC with no shape distortion of cyclic voltammetry curves measured under the bending angle of 180 degrees and with 1000 times of repeated bending. This work proposes a simple acid treatment to largely enhance the energy storage ability of pure CF electrodes. The bifunctional substance with current collecting and energy storing abilities is expected to be well developed in the future for applying on numerous efficient flexible energy storage devices.

The application of phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) may lead to the extensive distribution in soils, while the role of straw biochar as a soil amendment on the transport and sorption of PUHs are still unclear. Thus, the transport and sorption behavior of three typical PUHs with rice straw biochar (RSB) was studied in both adsorption simulation experiments of aqueous solution and packed column experiments:the sorption mechanism of RSB to herbicides was investigated through batch sorption studies with three influencing factors including dosage of RSB, pH, and ionic strength (IS) with orthogonal test. The sorption coeff icients were improved significantly by increasing the dosage of RSB, while there was no obvious influence by enhancing the pH and IS value. The optimal sorption conditions (pH value at 3, IS at 0.1 M, and RSB dosage at 60 mg) of three herbicides were set and the maximum removal rates of Monuron, Diuron, and Linuron were 41.9%, 25%, and 56.8%, respectively. The co-transport process of RSB and PUHs were investigated under different RSB dosage, pH value, and IS value. The retention effect increased greatly with enhancing the RSB dosage and pH value. However, IS did not have a significant influence on the retention of RSB, and therefore it had little effect on the adsorption capacity, which was consistent with the results of sorption experiments. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) for co-transport were well simulated by the two-site non-equilibrium convection-dispersion equation (CDE). Most of the regression coefficients (R-2) were above 0.99, which uncovered the co-transport in packed column were affected by physical absorption and chemical forces. According to the fitting parameters analysis, the RSB particles and PUHs were subjected to a greater resistance and a stronger stability by reducing pH value in porous media. The presence of RSB increased the amount of dynamic sorption sites in the entire co-transport system, which led to a significant promotion of the PUHs’ sorption and interception. The present experiment was conducted to determine whether, during periods of negative energy balance, the increase in glucose availability, despite similar DMI and greater milk production, induced by a combined supplement of folic acid and vitamin B-12 was related to effects of insulin on metabolism. Sixteen multiparous Holstein cows averaging 45 days in milk (standard deviation: 3) were assigned to 8 blocks of 2 animals each according to their milk production (45 kg/d; standard deviation: 6) during the week preceding the beginning of the experiment. Within each block, they received weekly intramuscular injections of either saline (CON) or folic acid and vitamin B-12 (VIT) during 5 consecutive weeks. During the last week, the cows were fed 75% of their ad libitum intake during 4 d. Blood samples were taken the morning before starting the feed restriction and on the third day of feed restriction. On the fourth day of feed restriction, the daily meal was not served and an intravenous glucose tolerance test was performed. During the 4 wk preceding the feed restriction, milk production and DMI were not affected by treatments. During the feed restriction, the vitamin supplement tended to decrease milk fat concentration and increase milk concentration of lactose. Plasma concentrations of homocysteine, Ile, Leu, Val, and branched-chain AA increased in VIT cows during the restriction but not in CON cows. During the glucose tolerance test, insulin peak height was lower and insulin incremental positive area under the curve tended to be lower for VIT than for CON [83 (95% confidence interval, CI: 64-108) vs. 123 (95% CI: 84-180) mu g.180 min/L, respectively]. Free fatty acid nadir was reached earlier for VIT than for CON [34 (95% CI: 26-43) vs. 46 (95% CI: 31-57) min, respectively]. Glucose area under the curve, clearance rate and peak height, insulin time to reach the peak and clearance rate, and free fatty acid nadir did not differ between VIT and CON. The reduction in insulin release during a glucose tolerance test without changes in glucose clearance rate or area under the curve suggests that the vitamin supplement improved insulin sensitivity in feed-restricted lactating dairy cows.

A PPTS (pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate)-catalyzed bicyclization reaction of 2-isocyanobenzaldehydes as 1,5-dielectrophiles with various amines has been developed. The reaction not only provides a simple and efficient strategy for the assembly of structurally diverse fused quinazoline derivatives from readily available substrates under metal-free and mild conditions in a single step with only water and hydrogen as the by-products, but also opens the way to the application of o-formyl arylisocyanides in the synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocycles.
