A rhodium-catalyzed synthesis of isoquinolino[1,2-b]quinazolines via C-H annulation using vinylene carbonate as an oxidizing acetylene surrogate in biomass-derived gamma-valerolactone (GVL) has been developed. The reactions proceeded smoothly to give the corresponding products in moderate to good yields without any external oxidant and base. This protocol can also be applied for the synthesis of 5,6-dihydro-8H-isoquinolino[1,2-b]quinazolin-8-ones.

Photoprocesses in bis(15-crown-5)-1,3-distyrylbenzene (DSB) and its complexes with barium and lead perchloatewere studied in MeCN by absorption, luminescence, and laser kinetic spectroscopy. The triplet DSB molecules are involved in the degradation of electronic excitation energy, together with fluorescence processes. The most efficient intersystem crossing accompanied by a decrease in the DSB fluorescence quantum yield, occurs for the lead perchlorate complex. Using quantum chemistry methods (DFT and TDDFT), the geometry, structure, and transition energies to the S1 state were calculated for trans- and cis-isomers of DSB in the gas phase and with allowance for the solvent and for 1:1 and 2:2 DSB complexes with barium cation in the ground and excited states. The orbital structures of the 2:2 complexes were calculated by ab initio method, and conclusions were drawn about the possibility of [2 + 2]- photocycloaddition reaction.

A three-component [3 + 2 + 1] annulation strategy for the synthesis of biologically and pharmaceutically active 2,3-diarylpyridine derivatives by using a series of allylic alcohols, ketones, and ammonium acetate as substrates has been developed. Noble-metal-free photocatalysts with high and stable performance provide an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient route for green organic synthesis. In this work, CdS nanoparticles with small particle size and different amount were successfully deposited on the surface of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The deposition of suitable content of CdS on COFs could not only modify the light adsorption ability and the intrinsic electronic properties, but also enhance the photocatalytic activity and cycling performance of CdS for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols under visible light. Especially, COF/CdS-3 exhibited the highest yield (97.1%) of benzaldehyde which is approximately 2.5 and 15.9 times as that of parental CdS and COF, respectively. The results show that the combination of CdS and COF can improve the utilization of visible light and the separation of photo-generated charge carriers, and COF with the pi-conjugated system as supports for CdS nanoparticles could provide efficient electron transport channels and improve the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, this kind of COF-supported photocatalysts with accelerated photo-induced electrons and charge-carrier separation between semiconductors possesses great potentials in future green organic synthesis. Media coverage of disasters potentially damages mental health. Moreover, its effects may differ as recipients may have different emotional responses toward media. The present study examined whether social capital, known to be protective against mental problems, influences a recipient’s emotional response toward news media broadcasting of natural disasters via newspapers, television and internet in Japan. Three social capital components, social participation, social support and cognitive social capital, were considered in the present study as each component reportedly had different effect on mental health. This nationwide cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 2015 among 1,200 Japanese citizens aged 15 to 79 years who were selected using the multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected via the drop-off pick-up method using a printed structured questionnaire. Negative and positive emotions were classified based on recipients’ responses against news media. Among 1,190 participants who reported emotions toward news media, 30.9% (368) had experienced any natural disasters, 37.4% (445) belonged to at least one formal or informal organization (social participation), 40.2% (478) had high social support, and 68.8% (819) had high cognitive social capital. High social support was associated with both reduced negative emotional response (OR 0.66, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.47-0.93) and increased positive emotional response (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.04-2.12) in multivariate analyses, while high cognitive social capital was only associated with increased positive emotional response (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.11-2.37). These results suggest protective effects of social support and cognitive social capital against news media coverage of natural disasters.

Despite certain limitations, bioaugmentation enhances the efficiency of bioremediation systems. In this study, three aqueous extracts (APE, ACE and APE) from aged residual biomixtures in three biopurification systems (BPSs) exposed to pesticides at a pilot scale were found to improve pesticide removal. The addition of ACEs and AVEs to solutions containing the model compound diuron increased removal rates 6- and 17-fold, respectively, as compared to APEs. These extracts also increased the removal of the metabolite 3,4-dichloroaniline, while AVEs, in particular, were found to remove all pesticides within 9 days. Three metabolites less hazardous than 3,4-dichloroaniline were identified by SPME/GC/MS. AVEs, which also enhance linuron removal in liquid media, were found to increase diuron removal 6-fold in BPSs. We observed an increase in the relative abundance of taxa, such as Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Firmicutes, Deinococcus-Thermus and especially Proteobacteria (10%), in AV biomixtures, as well as an enrichment of gamma-proteobacteria and the actinobacterial genus Dokdonella in AVEs with respect to initial noncontaminated IV biomixture. We demonstrate that extracts containing a pollutant-acclimatized microbiome could be used as part of a bioaugmentation strategy to improve the functioning of on-farm BPSs and contaminated systems. A cellulose sulfonate catalyst (HS-cellulose sulfonate) with high stability, excellent catalytic activity and high acidity value (about 1.55 mmol g(-1)) was successfully prepared by SO3 gas phase sulfonation. The basic morphology and nanostructure of the catalyst were determined by HRTEM, XRD, IR, TG, etc. In addition, the catalyst was applied to the catalytic reaction of a dihydroquinazolinone derivative and a xanthene compound, and very valuable results were obtained. The development and preparation of cellulose sulfonate catalysts provide a good approach for the development and application of cellulose, and also an important application of green organic catalytic synthesis methodology.

Sorption of pesticides by soils holds a major consequence for their fate in the environment. As such, sorption coefficient (K-d/K-oc), which is derived from laboratory or field experiments is a fundamental parameter used in almost all screening tools to evaluate the fate or mobility of these compounds. The value of this coefficient is controlled by many soil and solute specific properties, as well as environmental variables. Soft computing techniques such as Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) have been successfully used to predict the equilibrium partitioning of many compounds in various engineered systems. Application of these techniques to natural systems such as soils is however lacking. Here, we present the use of ANFIS in predicting the sorption per unit mass of soil, Q(e), used in the calculation of K-d/K-oc of compounds in soils. In a previous study, we collected data associated to the adsorption of five phenylurea herbicides in 18 tropical soils. Here, we analysed such data and based on established correlations, nine variables were selected as potential input vectors (i.e., six soil properties, two herbicides molecular descriptors and initial solute concentrations). A total of 255 ANFIS models of one to eight input vectors were elaborated under 10-fold cross-validation. Multiple linear regression (MLR) models were similarly developed, and compared with the ANFIS in terms of mean absolute error (MAE), root-mean-square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R-2). The best ANFIS model (M94) has an MAE(test), RMSEtest and R-test(2) of 3.43 +/- 0.43, 4.94 +/- 0.80 and 0.95 +/- 0.01, respectively, whereas the best MLR model (M13) returned an MAE, RMSE and R-2 of 7.71 +/- 0.13, 10.11 +/- 1.21 and 0.81 +/- 0.01, respectively. We observed that generally ANFIS performed better than MLR regarding both accuracy and interpretability. Accordingly, we recommend the use of ANFIS for predicting the sorption coefficients of phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) in soils.

One of the challenges of catalysis is the transformation of inert C-H bonds to useful products. Copper-containing monooxygenases play an important role in this regard. Here we show that low-temperature oxygenation of dinuclear copper(I) complexes leads to unusual tetranuclear, mixed-valent mu(4)-peroxo [Cu-I/Cu-II](2) complexes. These Cu4O2 intermediates promote irreversible and thermally activated O-O bond homolysis, generating Cu2O complexes that catalyze strongly exergonic H-atom abstraction from hydrocarbons, coupled to O-transfer. The Cu2O species can also be produced with N2O, demonstrating their capability for small-molecule activation. The binding and cleavage of O-2 leading to the primary Cu4O2 intermediate and the Cu2O complexes, respectively, is elucidated with a range of solution spectroscopic methods and mass spectrometry. The unique reactivities of these species establish an unprecedented, 100 % atom-economic scenario for the catalytic, copper-mediated monooxygenation of organic substrates, employing both O-atoms of O-2.

Chiral polyurethanes of cinchona alkaloid were synthesized via repetitive Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. The Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of cinchona urethane dimers and aromatic diiodides afforded the chiral polyurethanes. The chiral polyurethane bearing free OH group at the C6′ position of the quinoline ring in the cinchona alkaloid unit showed high catalytic activities and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee) in the Michael addition reactions.
