Despite the well-established pharmacological properties of aromatic sulfonamides and the interest of introducing ferrocene into drugs, ferrocene sulfonamides have scarcely been studied. General synthetic methods using lithium bases to perform sulfonamide-directed deprotolithiation or the halogen dance reaction are here reported for the functionalization of N,N-dialkylferrocenesulfonamides toward various polysubstituted derivatives. Postfunctionalization of the ferrocenyl iodides by cross-coupling and lithium/iodine exchange reactions were also considered. Finally, the ligand behavior of new ferrocene phosphines in palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions was studied, and the reaction outcomes are viewed in light of DFT calculations.

In this study, two double-anode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were connected in series for degradation of the azo dye reactive brilliant red X-3B. After the series connection, the electricity generation of one of the MFCs decreased, and the other was not affected too much. Due to the special structure in the double-anode MFC reduced the imbalanced performance between the MFC units, the occurrence of voltage reversal was limited. The removal efficiencies in two MFC reactors were not consistent after the series connection, the results showed that the MFC with the reduced electricity generation had the higher removal efficiencies, it was 12.90, 11.66, and 40.05% higher than in the MFC in which the power generation capacity was not affected after the series connection, the MFC without serial connection, and the control group, respectively. Meanwhile, the microbial communities related to the degradation of refractory organic compounds increased and related to electricity generation decreased in the MFC with the reduced electricity generation, the changes of the microbial communities were consistent with its electricity generation and the removal efficiencies. The degradation products in the effluent from two MFC units showed that had the products generated from the MFC with the reduced electricity generation had simpler structures comparing the other MFC unit. Background Pollination services provided by solitary bees, the largest group of bees worldwide, are critical to the vitality of ecosystems and agricultural systems alike. Disconcertingly, bee populations are in decline, and while no single causative factor has been identified, pesticides are believed to play a role in downward population trends. The effects of pesticides on solitary bee species have not been previously systematically cataloged and reviewed. Objectives This systematic scoping review examines available evidence for effects of pesticide exposure on solitary bees to identify data gaps and priority research needs. Methods A systematic literature search strategy was developed to identify and document reports on solitary bee pesticide exposure-effects investigations. Literature was subsequently screened for relevance using a Population, Exposures, Comparators, and Outcomes (PECO) statement and organized into a systematic evidence map. Investigations were organized by effect category (lethal effects on immatures, lethal effects on adults, sublethal effects on immatures, and sublethal effects on adults), species, pesticide class, and publication year. Results A comprehensive literature search of Web of Science and ProQuest Agricultural & Environmental Science supplemented by targeted internet searching and reference mining yielded 176 reports and publications for title and abstract screening and 65 that met PECO criteria (22 included lethal and 43 included sublethal effects endpoints). Relevant design details (pesticide, test compound configuration, study type, species, sex, exposure duration) were extracted into literature inventory tables to reveal the extent endpoints have been investigated and areas in need of additional research. Conclusions Evidence mapping revealed diversity in the pesticides and endpoints studied across the database. However, dilution across bee species, lack of complementary laboratory work and paucity of replicated investigations complicate efforts to interpret and apply available data to support pesticide risk assessment.

An efficient metal-free strategy for the synthesis of alpha-substituted homoallylamine derivatives has been developed via a 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP)-promoted 2-aza-Cope rearrangement of aldimines, generated in situ by condensation of aldehydes with easily accessible 1,1-diphenylhomoallylamines. This reaction provides rapid access to alpha-substituted homoallylamines with excellent functional group tolerance and yields. The reaction takes place at room temperature and no chromatographic purification is required for product isolation. The synthetic utility of the current method is further demonstrated by the transformation of the obtained benzophenone ketimines into N-unprotected homoallylamines, an alpha-amino alcohol and an alpha-amino amide.

Propylene polymerization titanium-magnesium catalysts (TMCs) were synthesized from different magnesium compounds with diphenylketone (DPK) as the internal donor. The catalysts differed by an order of magnitude and more in the content of titanium and donor, activity, specific surface area and pore size. Sizes of MgCl2 crystallites with 110 or 104 lateral cuts were calculated from the Ti/Mg and DPK/Mg values. For highly active TMCs the composition, XRD and specific surface area were in agreement with the MgCl2 crystallites with 104 lateral cuts, TiCl4 adsorption on one magnesium ion and elongated in the 001 direction. For low-activity TMCs obtained by reacting Mg with BuCl, the sizes of MgCl2 crystallites in different directions were close. Activity of the catalysts was inversely proportional to the crystallite size calculated from the TMC composition. This dependence was preserved for the catalysts obtained via the substitution of ketone by phthalate.

A boron trifluoride catalysed reaction of coplanar 9-(phenyl-ethynyl)-9 H-fluoren-9-ols with various 2-aminobenzamides affords a number of highly functionalized, conjugated (Z)-2-((2-(9 H-fluoren-9-ylidene)-1-phenylethylidene)amino) benzamides in excellent yield. The reaction in the presence of N-bromosuccinimide affords (E)-5-bromo-2-((2-bromo-2-(9 H-fluoren-9-ylidene)-1-phenylethylidene)amino)benz-amides in very good yields. The scope of the reaction is demonstrated by selecting N-aryl substituted 2-aminobenzamides and aminosulfonamides as reaction partners. The structures of representative compounds were established by single-crystal XRD analysis. Based on the structure of the products, a plausible mechanism via formation of allene carbocation intermediates is proposed.

Here, the synthesis of MgO nanopowders via a simple precipitation method is defined. The morphology, phase identification, particle size distribution and specific surface area of the sample was investigated by FE-SEM, TEM, XRD, DLS, and BET techniques. The structural parameters were determined through XRD pattern. The sample crystallized in a pure cubic phase with the average crystallite size of 55 nm. The micro-strain (epsilon) and dislocation density (delta) of the sample were also calculated to be 0.1153 and 3.306 x 10(-4), respectively. The catalyst has a specific surface area and of 26.7 m(2)g(-1). The catalytic activity of MgO nanopowders was studied in the three-component condensation of aldehydes, 4-hydroxycoumarin, and malononitrile in aqueous media. A range of aromatic aldehydes undergoes the reaction to produce a series of pyrano[3,2-c]chromen derivatives in good yields.

A new strategy is presented for enhancing the catalytic activity of cross-linked chitosan beads. More precisely, chitosan beads were cross linked with glutaraldehyde and then, vinyl functionalized. In the next step, the vinyl-functionalized beads were polymerized with the as-prepared 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium bromide to furnish polyionic liquid on beads. The resultant compositewas subsequently utilized as a metal-free catalyst for catalyzing some classic organic transformations, including Knoevenagel condensation reaction and syntheses of tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans and pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines in aqueous media under mild reaction conditions. It was found that the novel composite could efficiently promote all of the examined reactions to afford the corresponding products in high yields. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited high recyclability for all reactions. An easy green synthetic approach for fused isoindoloquinazolinones has been developed under neat reaction (yields up to 91%) conditions. This new one-pot tandem methodology involves condensation of readily available anthranilamide with 3-(2-formylcycloalkenyl)-acrylic ester under solvent- and catalyst-free conditions. This strategy avoids the use of oxidant, and heavy metal catalysts and also is free from work-up and generation of toxic by-products. A dramatic change of photophysical properties of dihydroisoindoloquinazolinones in basic and aqueous media has also been documented in our study. Moreover, our model synthetic compound shows cytotoxic activity towards metastatic HepG2 and PC3 cancer cell lines.
